Am I the only one that finds this song a little strage? I mean it’s pretty clear the song is about the sad story of a teenager so deeply involved with drugs that he has no friends, is willing to try anything and ends up overdosing. The instrumentation and vocal performance however, have that hopeful shoegaze/dream pop feel so instead of a sad song about drugs I feel like I’m listening the The Rembrandts’ I’ll Be There For You, aka the Friends theme song, weird.
Despite the contrasting feel and production sound, A Teenager In Love is one of my favorite tracks from their self-titled debut LP. Does this track remind you of anything? Bowie -Â Modern Love maybe? Maybe a little bit. Either way, great song.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – A Teenager In Love

It reminds me of Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears Of A Clown’. Not in terms of sound but in terms of the ironic clash of words and music. I mean the chorus has:
But ain’t too much sadder than/The tears of a clown when there’s noone around
and then we get that overtly upbeat and cheery melody. Then after it:
Now if I appear to be carefree/It’s only to camouflage my sadness
Personally I’ve never understood it. ‘Tears Of A Clown’ just gets under my skin. The music is just far too happy. This is a good tune though man, nice one.
