Stars – Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It

Waking up on the 20th floor of a floor-to-ceiling window-filled high-rise flat in the Meatpacking district this morning, I was blessed by beautiful western and northern views of NYC and the Hudson Valley covered in a grey blanket of plush clouds.  Immediately, I ran towards my computer to set a tune and the tone in order for me to ease into my morning.  At first I thought: ‘these clouds are beautiful, but no sun kind of sucks’, but as soon as the bottom end of “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It” kicked in, it simply made those grey clouds over this beautiful city a picture perfect place.

Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It is generously blessed with great composition and incredible tonal balance that is captivated and noticed from the very start of the song straight into the very finish.  Vocals that begin glistening from the jump and which never exaggerate throughout, even as the much welcomed and sonically sound boy-girl (via: Torquil Campbell & Amy Milan) back-and-forth vocals kick in on a chorus that will most likely contradict their speculative lyrics:

The world won’t listen to this song

and the radio won’t play it.”

provide a strong foundation for the powerful blend of what we categorize as simply “hit music” here.  Stars does a great job with powerful and catchy basslines that rock hard throughout and maintain great support from motorik drums that together enhance the playback and repeat feeling you will be strongly left with at the end of this just over four and a half minute ride.

It’s a pretty melody

It might help you through the night time

But it doesn’t make it easy

To leave the party at the right time.”

Sprinkled with a low buzzing guitar that plays some catchy riffs, the song shows us that it’s a combination of well thought out placement of sounds that make everything else on it as rhythmic as the drumming we are helplessly attracted to.  Never forgetting my love for lyrics of love, I can only translate the message that I’ve received here, which is simply what the title of the track is to Hold On When You Love and Let Go When You Give it—nothing more, nothing less.  Love with all your heart no matter what the outcome of that relationship might become, because at the end of the day that’s the only type of love that we ever truly remember, and we ever truly miss.
