Starting to write about a song is the hardest part. When you listen to a song for the first time, you don’t try to analyze why you like it. You just get to be swept up in it. Trying to explain why you like something is always the hardest part, I feel. When I listen to this song, I don’t want to put it under a microscope, I want to get wrapped up in it. When I get a piece of cake, I don’t want to explain why I like it, I am busy eating that piece of cake. This, by the way, is good cake.
MS MR released this track last year, and rereleased it on their debut album Secondhand Rapture which came out in May. The duo creates music that makes you feel lonely and happy and sad and content. If there is one thing I hope our generation of music is known for (let’s all be honest, I think we are still working towards our “rock and roll” type contribution), I hope that it would be the female vocals that have become power houses bridging various genres of music with folk, electronic, pop, and country. These blurred lines in musical genres are keeping things interesting.
This song can be as heavy or light as you like though. Surface value is a catchy dance song (made more so by CHVRCHES remix). But the lyrics read more like the poetry of a tormented lover through the entrancing voice of the lead vocalist.
“Make ash and leave the dust behind
Lady diamond in the sky
To guide me
When I fall
I fall on tragedy
Welcome to the inner workings of my mind
So dark and foul I can’t disguise
Nights like this I become afraid
Of the darkness in my heart
CHVRCHES took this already amazing song and added their signature synthpop sound. This only adds to the anticipation of their debut album release in late September of this year.
