Welcome to The Decade

I believe he’s too humble and shy to admit it, since it don’t need more attention than it already gets, but it was EMPT’s first birthday last november, n the sneaky site thought we wouldn’t notice. Properly set up with a spanking brand new server, EMPT has been bigger than ever, but smaller than it will be tomorrow.

So in honor to both the new year and our “EMPT is WE” philosophy, we write this post. I asked people from all over the globe to write a short review of their New Year’s eve experience in order to give you, the sine qua non of EMPT, a post lived by the people, written by the people and enjoyed by the people. Here is the result:

Daft Punk – Around The World (Kid Dub Remix)

Many of the people I emailed to write for this post replied the same thing: I didn’t do much on New Year’s. It was quite low key. Several messages along those lines lead to a personal epiphany: Are we finally reaching a moment in evolution where youngsters value the relaxed company of family and elderly relatives over a messy dressy tits-up celebration? Well, in my case, I’ve hit that point.
I’ve spent most of my “vacation” working my tiny penny-sized ass off for the epic cause that is our upcoming company. This meant I had less, if any time left to spend with my family. This being the case, I cancelled my trip to Acapunk (Acapulco for the layman) and decided to spend New Year’s with the family. A relaxed fire lit night with my grandmother and Co. has definitely been the most chilled celebration yet. Before my cousins dragged me out to a lush lounge party, that ended up being my cousin-in-law drinking me into a coma, I got a sober chance to warm up the heart beat by bobbing my head to what I believe is the best, if not the only, proper remix of a Daft Punk hit. Just when you thought Around The World could not get any better than their Alive version, in comes Kid Dub and drops his flapping fish. The dynamics of this song are damn straight crazy. I remember when I was leaving JFK airport, I was dancing my way across the terminal to this tune. Hope it has the same effect on the rest of the family.

As the clock ticked its skinny ruthless hand to twelve, my family and I shifted endlessly between two TV broadcasts: the official countdown from El Angel, Mexico City, and MTV2, showing the revolutionary 15 min. music video to Thriller. What a better way to end the year than to enjoy one of the King’s many gems! Well, in mexico, grandmother has shotgun over everything. So obviously, the final seconds focused on the official count down. Have it your way granny. In any case, ’twas an epic countdown all in all. Enjoy – JCOS, Cuernava, Mx.

Alphabeat – Digital Love (Daft Punk Cover)

Just like your local organic food store, we’re all about keeping things fresh. So we’re adding some themes to certain days. Yeah, we like creating expectation. So in addition to sample saturdays, we’re adding La Reprise De Mi-Semaine, a wednesday dedicated to a cover version of our choice bound to shake all of our preconceptions on musical generics.

Last night I had a dream about you. In this dream, I’m dancing right beside you…”

So Liverpool has been bit by a new type of dance. It’s called the “Freeze your tits off and slip on iced streets” dance. You see, the english aren’t used to having large quantities of snow fall, and lack the know-how and equipement to clear it away. So if you are daring enough to make it to the streets, you’ll see a crowd of people trying to walk at the slowest pace imaginable, slipping from one side and sliding to the other. It’s all rather poetic if you have the time to look out your morning window for a few minutes. Anyhow, Alphabeat’s acoustic rendition of Daft Punk’s Digital Love would be perfect to harmonize this new unintended dance by the freezing folk of the North of England. Seriously, its like watching children trying to walk for the first time. I’ve seen drunken lumberjacks walk a straighter line… Ok so this Danish pop band changed several details to naunce this Daft Punk Classic: indie kick drum, indie textured guitars, indie keys, and three part harmonies. So, indie punk goes daft? Or Daft Punk goes indie? In any case, keep an ear out for the beautiful vocal harmonies. And remember, Wednesday’s are the new Fridays. Enjoy.

And it looked like everyone was having fun. The kind of feeling, I waited so long … As we dance the feeling gets stronger. There’s nothing wrong with just a little fun. We were dancing all night long…”

Disco Ruido – Mrs. Love

So I’m back in the city of the Golden Angel, green buggie taxi cabs and absolutely insane bus drivers. I got nothing but love for Mexico City, but mostly because I get to see family I haven’t seen in over a year. So last night I got a visit from my cousin David Souza, fashion designer and CEO of his model agency, Paragon Models. So during one of our catch-up chats, he kept interrupting me, asking if we could listen to a song from one of his friend’s bands. After a while, I gave in. Ah silly billy, I should have listened the first time.

Disco Ruido is an electro dance collective from Mexico City, but I have lil’ feeling lead singer Mercedes Nasta is originally from or has lived for a considerable time in my home town, Queretaro. Mrs. Love, a laid back summer-grooved tune built upon a sample excerpted from the Beatles’ You Know My Name, is no fresh bread in the blogosphere. Notwithstanding, it hasn’t nearly gotten the attention it deserves. So if you don’t know, we’re here to let you know. And if you already know, we’re here to remind you.

There is no doubt that Mercedes’ vocals are unique and eccentric, but I can’t help but picture a threesome between Lykke Li, Regina Spektor and Anja Oyen Vister from Flunk every time I listen. Both Anja and Mercedes bare a beautifully similar foreign accent that will make anybody’s ears quiver. Enjoy.

Everybody knows that life can be wonderful. It’s a soothing delight and it’s moving my life.”

Example – Watch The Sun Come Up (Remixed)

First and foremost, apologies for the tardiness, but New Years eve took its tole, as the night blended into the dusk, and dusk into the day. As they say, work hard, party harder, right?

Well, if I had a pickle for every time I heard a band, loved the music, and despised the singer, I would have my own network of pickle farms. For example (no pun intended), Example released Watch The Sun Come Out last summer, and a few seconds into the song I was loving every bit … until the flaccid rap hit the tape. Gutted as I was at the time, I had a feeling sooner or later, other people would relate and sort some solid remixes out. Dicho y hecho. A month ago, my fellow party trooper Mei Ling sent me Moam’s remix of the aforementioned song, from the Global Underground 2010 compilation. I’m quite picky when it comes to House, but this song satisfied the amendments I believed the song needed from the start. Deeper drops, better paced rises and no half-assed raps to kill the mood.

A little research lead me to Devil’s Gun Zeitgeist’s Remix. Now this is my cup of tea, with a more interesting use of samples and a solid electro vibe, raunchy synths and all. DGZ seems to simply add more originality to the remix, and even though Moam’s version works in its own way, its too close to the original.

Most people nowadays rate a good night when they no longer know if its too late or too early, and this song fits in perfectly with that approach to night life.

Hey. Good morning. Watch the sun come up, it’s calling. I want another day with you.”

I suggest anybody interested in production keeps an eye out for each DJ’s distinct use of dynamics. The instrumentation and orchestration of each track even give them a drastically different tempo vibe, even though the BPM doesn’t differ to such a large extent.

Well, enough of technical mumbo jumbo. Let’s do what we do best, sit back and enjoy. And again, Creme de la Creme for 2010.

Kavinsky – Testarossa Autodrive (sebastiAn remix)

333

After a week in NYC I have come to the conclusion that Life is trying to teach me some serious patience. The traffic in this city is ridiculous. It makes Mexico City’s streets seem like a formula 1 racetrack. Sitting in the back seat of a cab on my way to meet Hec, going so slow it felt we were moving in reverse, I couldn’t help but smack SebastiAn’s remix of Kavinsky’s testarossa autodrive. This song is not for your privileged german autobahn drivers, its not for Schumacher or Alonso or any of them boys. This song is for the metro takers, snail-speed cab fare payers, and all the bus musketeers. This is for all those who realize that Life has given our souls an engine that can hit a potential 170 mph, yet the law tells us to keep it under 60. This is for those that want to live in overdrive.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young. We have the vision, now lets have some fun!.” – MGMT

Diplo – Fabriclive 24

Every day we come across well-intended artists that make an attempt at ameliorating an already epic song by remixing it in their own style. I don’t know about you, but looking for a good remix of a classic tune is like looking for your contact lens in the middle of a crowded dance floor.

A bit over three years ago I had my first experience of the renowned night club Fabric in the heart of London, to go see my friend Nathan C. lay down a set. Several floors of rooms diversified by each DJ playing any given night make that place a musical dojo. Whatever butters your muffin, they had it. A sober trance induced by musical mastery is what I was submitted to.

That being said, the boys n girls at Fabric management, not stupid in the least, release an album of their best sets. Diplo’s edition is the 24th of over 40 all incredibly unique and epic Farbiclive sets.
As I was preparing for one of my many meetings last week, I ran across Diplo’s epic transition between The Cure’s Lovesong and Outkast’s B.O.B. It is amazing how some people can listen to a song, and within a matter of seconds, a number of paralleling tunes pop up in their head. “Damn, that would mix well’ is an exemplary thought crossing his mind.

It was blatant that these two bad boys needed to be posted in our family dojo. Hoping it has the same effect on you as it did on me, here’s Diplo’s transitional mastery. Enjoy.

Merry Mixmas: Christmas Classics Remix

6a00c2252084d58e1d010981580692000d-500pi

Yeah baby, It’s christmas! From Timbuktu, to the Caspian Sea, even here at EMPT. Well, that means one thing: a house full of relatives, bubbly and a kitchen full of once-a-year delicatessen. That’s enough to make any ice queen thaw.
So I was greeting all my aunts, uncles, and cousins and one of them suggested I should sort out some festive tunage. Seeing as I really enjoy the Verve Christmas Remix, I popped that on. They were not impressed. So I turned to my back up album, Merry Mixmass: bass brought down to a minimum, fancy techno gimmicks as well. Basically things kept as habitual as possible. Notwithstanding, this album is so smooth, I can’t believe it’s not butter! So in harmony with this worldwide christmas cheer, here are two epitomizing tracks of this jazzy low-fi compilation. I encourage you all to get a hold of a copy. Happy Ho Ho Ho day y’all. Enjoy.

Fair Ohs – Summer Lake

fairh

You know that older kid in school who scares you half to death with his radical ideas, yet you end up getting intrigued even more by his f$#cked up yet interesting way of thinking? No? Well, Eddie Frankel was that dood in my high school. First band I ever heard him sing in was The Inch Lost Touch, a somewhat experimental raw punk thrash band. After he graduated, I heard him scream bloody murder in Cutting Pink With Knives. (Definitely not the song you want to wake your grandma up with on her birthday).
Anyway, I was catching up with him the other day and asked if he was musically active nowadays. It was then that he mentioned his new project, Fair Ohs. When I asked him what kind of sound they had, all he said was “well you know Paul Simon’s solo stuff? Kinda like that, but, you know, punk.”
That being said, I leave you with Summer Lake, one of my favorite from this crazy genre-edifying trio from London. This song is perfect for all those trying to transcend this freezing cold weather, warming their ears with a chubby set of headphones walking the snowy streets of the city. Wherever you may be, this song will take you straight to a sunny beach, sipping a mai thai from a cocktail glass with a tacky tooth-pick umbrella. Enjoy.

I keep waking up by mistake, I keep waking up by mistake…”

Shiny Toy Guns – Starts With One (Classixx Remix)

l_fc08c1d83c32d50e70950505b934c65e

Is it me or are we all going through some sort or another of a transitional period? Weather it be global warming, a change in career, or a personal epiphany, I keep meeting people that feel that things as we know them are transcending the norm.

Times are a changin’. ” – Bob Dylan

Well, I’m part of the gang that believes it’s for the better.

I think most of us in the EMPT family would agree to religiously relying on some sound boost to keep our chests popped. Well, this song just set my ass alight. Songs like this one rekindle my faith in the world, people and more importantly, myself. More than rekindling, this song gets me back in ‘Let’s F#$%ckin DO This Sh!t’ mode. Specially during these days I’ve spent with Hec in the city, a tune like this one fits like a bling ring on a finger,

It starts with one … now there’s two… Let’s show them the only way, let’s show them our hearts. Let’s show them the only way, let’s sew up their hearts.”

Any EMPT reader that’s spent more than a month with us is now more than familiar with Classixx and their heart thumping remixes. So here’s another one to set you on superman/superwoman/superpoodle mode. Enjoy

David Bowie – All The Young Dudes

britmurphhh

Thirty two is far too early. It seems its a rock n’ roll thing to die at a young age, quite often between the decade age span of 25 to 35. As far as music goes, a daunting age is 27. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin, amongst several others, all past away age 27. This is what some pop critics call the Forever 27 Club.
On a current note, this morning, actress/model Brittany Murphy passed on to greener pastures. EMPT would like to pay respects to this beautiful PYT, and send our love and pesame to her family and loved ones.
World Party covered David Bowie’s All The Young Dudes for Clueless, in which Brittany’s role is crucial to the epicness of the film. They got the chorus sounding spot on, but their guitar sounds and verses are far from bodacious. So we stand by Bowie and his version. The lyrics of the song touch upon the subject of death at a young age, as well as evoking the parallels of being young in the city or stuck in suburbia. So with no further ado, this goes out to her. May she rest in peace and harmony. Enjoy.
