Take an unstoppable force like Beyonce already mixed with something as dancey as Major Lazer, and then throw some Beastie Boys in there. Two songs that already have a knack for getting stuck in your head, placed together to give you the beauty that is a modern day mash up with all the right ingredients. Mind you, I’m very picky about mash-ups, but this one just can’t do any wrong. This track just bleeds summer happy. I’m a sucker for songs that put me right in the mood to dance. But not just dance. I mean like jump up and down, smiling like an idiot, with your hands moving in every direction. It’s just the kind of joyful song that you want everyone to hear. There’s not too much else to say about this track because it’s just pure gold, so turn up the speakers in your house, dance around in your underwear, and do whatever else you need to do to spread the good cheer.

Will someone please explain to me the phenomenon that is time while at work? Doesn’t it feel like right before you get to work time is flying and you can’t move fast enough but the second you sit down it’s like you go into some alternate world and it takes an hour for 5 minutes to pass. The Twelves released a new 60 minute mixtape two days ago and I think my friend Ben’s facebook message describes it best: “new 12s mixtape = predictable amazingness.”  This is the followup to their previous mixtape Episode II, which I never got around to posting but will in the next week or so.  I’ve been listening to this all morning and it rocks, there’s really nothing else to say.  These guys just get it when it comes to song selection and production. The transitions from song to song are seamless, the mash-ups and remixes are top notch and the overall flow and feel is energetic and entertaining all throughout.  it’s quite good.

Every time I listen to Chromeo I’m reminded of those old school smooth soul R&B/Funk bands. You know, like the Barry Whites, Fatback Band, Major Harris, the Persuaders. All the guys whose sole purpose as artist was to sing about the many complexities, dimensions and details of macking it to girls on a daily basis. I was always fascinated by those steamy spoken interludes Barry White had in his songs, I mean you have to be deep in the seduction game to pull that off and not come across like a master cheese-ball. Call Me Up is about making the said girl comfortable with some casual phone conversation and flirtatious foreplay…

I’m not usually into mash-ups but my friend Will sent me this a few weeks ago and I thought it was great. Dead Prez is an underground hip-hop group known for their socially conscious and politically charged lyrics. Though never achieving much commercial success they’ve garnered incredible respect and street credibility from both fans and fellow artist. Hip Hop, the most well known song from their 2000 LP Let’s Get Free, is an attack on the commercialization and exploitation of hip hop. This song was written in 2000 so the downfall of Hip Hop had already begun with the questionable leadership of Puff Daddy and post Hard Knock Life Jay-Z. Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear is a great song, I won’t say much about it so the focus remains on the Dead Prez lyrics, but enjoy the mash-up, we don’t post many.
