Bat For Lashes – Use Somebody (Reprise de Kings of Leon)

I’ve been following Kings of Leon for quite sometime now and everytime I think they’re about to succumb to the pressures of success I’m proved terribly wrong. From indie to mainstream every KOL album has shown musical growth and creativeness equal to or better than the last. When Sex On Fire was leaked last year I was convinced it would be the highlight of the album, I’m mean where can you go after and ode to mindblowing sex? A week later I heard Use Somebody and my expectations were superseded once again.

Lead singer Caleb Followill wrote this song while feeling lonely on tour. He seems to be struggling between the ironic concept of having so many people around but still not finding anything meaningful or worthwhile - ”Painted faces fill the places i can’t reach.” I think anyone living in a big city can easily relate. While the song may be a little mellowdramatic for some, I really think he meant these lyrics and I tend to forget labels and descriptions when I feel the vibe is authentic. With that said, I was so impressed when I heard the Bat For Lashes cover simply because I know how difficult it is to redo such a personal song. Then again, Natasha Kahn is so talented I should have expected it. Here’s the cover, enjoy.

Royksopp – Miss It So Much (Feat. Lykke Li)

I may be biased with Lykke Li on the vocals but Miss It So Much is definitely my favorite song off of Royksopps third proper album, Junior. The production quality on this song is phenomenal, the gifted Norwegians created a wonderful ambient experience that serves as the perfect canvas for Lykke’s voice. It’s a Royksopp song that sounds like it could be on the next Lykke Li album, is this a glimpse of the future? Great song, enjoy.

Chromeo – I Can’t Tell You Why

Young boy, don’t be late, this girl ain’t really got time to wait. You think it’s all for show, but this is just the only way I know.”

I like listening to Chromeo, aside from the music just being flat out good, Dave 1’s lyrics are right in tune with my style in all matters girl related – Have fun, know what she wants, take her out to eat, make her comfortable, be sincere, take her out to dance, don’t be shy, show compassion when she’s flipping out as all girls do from time to time, don’t be a sissy (if she wants someone flipping out with her she’ll call her girlfriend and have no use for your girly man ways), let her be independent, take her on trips, have some more fun and be cool.

With that said, it’s time again for my favorite genre blending; sex-saturated; Arab/Jewish; long live the 80’s  synth-pop sensation – Chromeo. Their latest effort is a cover of the Eagles 1980’s ballad I Can’t Tell You Why.  The track was released recently and will part of a larger collaboration between Chromeo and the renowned DJ Kicks Mix Series. This isn’t your usual uptempo Chromeo but a good track regardless. Here’s Tenderoni, one of my favorite tracks from Fancy Footwork, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Aout

New month – new Le Miel du Mois mixtape on EMPT. I would write more but it’s Saturday and I need to back out in the sun asap, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Aout:  Last month, one of the fans of the monthly mix, “kiki,” commented on how Le Miel du Mois: Juillet makes her feel: “like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” Le Miel du Mois: Aout, aims to invoke the same exact feeling, but with a few minor alterations: sans pants, and add in flashing, flashing, lights lights lightssss.”

Simian Mobile Disco – Hustler

I like girls, that like girls, who like me & like girls.

Is it just me or has there been a significant  increase in the amount of girl on girl make out sessions in New York City nightlife? It’s awesome. I won’t ask too many questions or speak too much on the subject so just carry on girls, carry on.

A good friend put me on to this video way back when it came out, I think it was ‘06… Great beat, great concept, excellent execution. Here’s a little kiss & tell for your Friday morning, enjoy.

“I’m a hustler baby, that’s what my daddy’s made me.”

Basement Jaxx – Raindrops

First of all, this song is first-class. Second of all, it’s about time! Third, if your looking for the  grim and gritty version Basement Jaxx, look again. Don’t get me wrong, Remedy is the classic and with nostalgia always in play it will be impossible to top it…

I’m not going to be able to top what my name is…” – Eminem

But styles and trends have never stopped me from liking a good song and this new single is no exception. In true blogosphere fashion, I’ve already started to hear people say how pop this song is and how they’re selling out to appeal to a wider audience blah blah. Slow down bagels, the Jonas Brothers are pop, this is nothing close to that. The production and vocal performance on this song are phenomenal. I except a legion of remixes within the next 48 hours. The new album is still untitled but is said to feature guest vocals from Grace Jones, Yoko Ono, Sam Sparro, Cyndi Lauper, Santigold, and Yo Majesty – I’m kinda like a big deal. I should have more tracks soon, stay tuned. In the meantime don’t call it a comeback! EMPT fave, enjoy.

Lykke Li – Breaking It Up (Punks Jump Up Remix)

Lykke-Li

SP: Biggie or Tupac?
Lykee Li: I love Biggie’s songs but I think I like Tupac more as a person.”

I’m starting to be convinced that I need to date a singer… First Natasha Khan writes a song about being a champion and now Lykke Li hints at understanding Tupac. Step your game up pretty girls! Didn’t know this about her but it all makes perfect sense now…

Anyways, it’s been about a week or so since our last Lykke Li post – a week too long. I forget where I was when I heard this remix, but I wrote it down in my Blackberry and while recapping on the night and deleting any silly phone numbers I may have picked up I came across it. Breaking It Up is one of the more dynamic and inviting tracks on Youth Novels, and like most of the album it’s been victim to both thrilling and mediocre remix. This Punks Jump Up Remix would not be the latter. In it’s original form, Breaking It Up is full of vigor and excitement, this remix is that idea on steriods – Bigger, Stronger, Faster, enjoy.

Metric – Gold Guns Girls

Hustle, hustle, hustle. Grind, grind, grind. Why does everyone got hustle on their mind?

The fact that I can relate or rather understand this song so well was once a bad thing, but my how fast things change. In the lyrics Emily Haines keeps asking – “More and more, more and more! Is it ever going to be enough?”

Ever stop and ask yourself why you want certain things? Better yet why you don’t even consider others? I’m not going to get too deep on you guys but when I first heard those lyrics I was inspired to analyze myself and examine my unwavering ambition and drive. What I realized was interesting, first I came to terms and eliminated the superficial things I once overvalued like pretty girls, money, etc. Then I came to understand what has most drastically changed my life in the last few months. I realized that my ambition and competitive nature are not rooted from a desire to simply win, but rather from an admiration for high level performance, and the persuit of excellence – i.e. Michael Jordan, Quincy Jones. In other words changing the goal from winning to being the best, a desire not for the prize but the process, the peace, the practice. It’s a tremendous difference that may seem insignificant to most but has changed the way I approach everything.

Anyways, I could write an essay on the topic but where I once kept asking for more and more, I’m now satisfying in new places. Been meaning to post more from Fantasies but with the blog growing, endless emails and all the new music to keep up with I simply forgot. Best song from the new album IMO. Has that Metric energy we can’t get enough of, enjoy.

Marina & The Diamonds – I Am Not A Robot

This song is about your classic amateur league lovers, you know, the ones so stuck in their insecurities and limitations that they feel the need to assume a particular style or attitude when it comes to love affairs. I’ve always found it amusing when my girlfriends, the kind and loving P.Y.T.’s they are, try to switch up on me and act tuff instead of just communicating their honest emotions…

You been acting awful tuff lately, smoking a lot of cigarettes lately.
But inside, your just a little baby.
It’s ok to say you gotta weak spot, you don’t alway have to be on top.
Better to be hated, then loved, loved, loved for what your not.”

While the posing may seem necessary and even get you what you want at the time, your partner will never really know who you are and before you know it another relationship gone, another story is told…

It ain’t nothing really, ayo dun spark the philly…” – Mobb Deep (Shook One’s Part 2)

I’m sure all this sounds cliché but most of the worlds wisdom inevitably is. Enough ranting, here a fantastic song and video by Marina & The Diamonds, enjoy.

The Virgins – Rich Girls (Twelves Remix)

So I went down to the New Rome clothing 2009 release party at Santos and pretty much the only good song the first DJ played was the Twelves Remix of Rich Girls. Great party, very cool shirts but the DJ left me wanting more. Anyways, we posted the original version of this song a while back so I figured it was a good time to give some updates. Here’s Twelves Remix of the song, by far the best. I’ve seen a bunch of remixes but no covers, I still prefer the original to the Little Boots version but kudos to Vicky for bringing us the female perspective, enjoy.
