Island Life

And were back… I spent a very long weekend out in Nantucket hanging out in beaches and picnicking in pastures, so let’s just I’m not exactly thrilled about returning to the concrete jungle but so it goes. I’ve vowed to spend the entire summer next year far away from New York City so I’m posting a song which pretty much explains how I feel in when I’m on island and doing it my way…

One time super model, actress and Andy Warhol muse, one can help but wonder when or how Grace Jones ever found the time to actually be a recording artist. Yet she did, and she did it well. La Vie En Rose is one of my favorite songs of all time. It is overwhelmingly romantic, glamorous and dreamy. The album it appears on is called Island Life, a title which couldn’t be more appropriate for this song. The track is an instrumental till about 2 minutes into the song, a rare and risky production decision that couldn’t be more fitting. Enjoy.

KiD CuDi – Dat New New (Viking Remix)

Viking was recently called out on HypeM for cheating the charts and loving his own music but when we broke this record a few months ago that was far from the case. Most of you may not know the original version of this song, partly because of the production, which was for a lack of a better word, lacking. However, this remix is great, it brings a whole new life and evergy to an otherwise decent song.

The Cure – Boys Don’t Cry

One of my favorite songs growing up. It’s about a dude who loses his girl and is sad but can’t show his emotions because well, Boys Don’t Cry.

Misjudged your limits, Pushed you too far.
Took you for granted, Thought you needed me more.
Now I would do most anything, to get you back by my side
But I just keep on laughing, hiding the tears in my eyes.
Cause boys don’t cry.”

Get a grip girly man! Big fan of The Cure, post-punk/new wave was my bloodline during the skateboarding/bmx days. Great song.

M.I.A. – Pull Up The People (Speed Painting By Salena)

Randomly ran into this during a YouTube binge and what a pleasant surprise it was. I’m not very familiar with speed painting but this undeniably cool. It’s from an upcoming artist called Salena, out of Berlin, Germany. She’s done a few of them which are featured on her Myspace. The featured track is one of my all time favorites M.I.A. songs called Pull Up The People, from her freshman effort Arular. Nothing like some invigorating Diplo production, London Sri Lanken street slang and cool art to get Friday started. Enjoy.

Here’s a bonus track from the Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape released back 2004.

You can be a follower but whose your leader?”

Air France – Collapsing at Your Doorstep

In her usual fashion, Steph Lund sent me this amazing song a few weeks ago but I’ve been so busy that I never got around to posting/listening to it. This song truly is something else, bliss is pretty much the only word I can use to describe it. I’m off to Nantucket for the weekend so and I can guarantee this will be the background music at some beach somewhere on island. Collapsing At Your Doorstep is from their 2008 released No Way Down EP, an album I highly recommed for all summer playlist. Fantastic feel good music, enjoy.

Sorta like a dream isn’t it? No, better.”

P.S. These are automated post, I left the city last night and won’t be back till next week so don’t get mad if I don’t answer emails etc. See you soon.

Feist – Sea Lion Woman (Chromeo Remix)

I was watching Nina Simone perform See-Line on YouTube and got reminded of a great cover by Feist, which it turn reminded me of an even better remix by Chromeo.

Said she loved my necklace – started relaxing, now that’s what the f&% I call a chain reaction.” – Iceberg Slim

No one does electrofunk better than Chromeo, period. For this remix, Chromeo lends it’s army of Moog, Roland and Sequential Circuit keyboards to give an otherwise good but simple song some extremely interesting and head-nodding space age production. The Feist version is from her third solo album The Reminder, and the Chromeo remix is a bonus track on that album.  I like The Reminder but compared to her previous album Let It Die, there’s just not much difference so I’ve never gotten into it. Besides that the whole iPod Nano commercial kinda ruined it for me but I’m weird when it comes to commercial licensing. Regardless, great remix, enjoy.

Pete & The Pirates – Mr. Understanding

The pop/punk blend is a feeling I really can never get enough of, at least when it’s done right. Pete & The Pirates are a band from Reading, England, they formed in 2005 and have since released two official EPs. Their sound is a mix of 80s post punk and 90’s American indie rock, fresh. Mr. Understanding is from their 2008 critically acclaimed LP, Little Death. The songs melody is as infectious as they come, the lyrics are simple yet meaningful – my favorite kind. Completely forgot about these guys till the ever faithful iTunes shuffle put them back in the picture. Great song, enjoy.

You and me trying hard to remember… How we ever started out with our sights so high.”

Bat For Lashes – What’s a Girl To Do?

These guys sampled the drums from “Be My Baby,” one of my favorite 60’s songs performed by The Shangri-Las and produced by one of my musical heroes, the pop mastermind Phil Spector. At face value, this song is about the thrill being gone, the end, going from liking someone to indifference. The callous overtone may turn some off but being a romantic realist I find this stage of a relationship just as interesting as actually being in love. Hey, if you can’t find the good in the “bad,” well then your just not that creative ; )

This video is great, it’s spooky, creepy, disturbing yet very fitting. Having grown up BMXing I was a huge fan of the bike gang doing ollie’s and flatland tricks while this girl is pouring her heart out about falling out of love. I had to turn off the video to actually listen to the lyrics but I you probably won’t have that problem. Cold as ice. Enjoy.

We walked arm in arm
But I didn’t feel his her touch
A desire I’d first tried to hide,
That tingling inside was gone
And when he she asked me:
‘do you still love me?’
I had to look away
I didn’t want to tell him her
That my heart grows colder with each day.”

Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek (DVW Remix)

I’m going to come out swinging on this one, this remix is great, it’s not better then the original but it’s pretty good! Hide & Seek is one of the most impressive, emotional and challenging song/productions you’ll ever hear. I like this song so much I almost didn’t post this, I want to keep it for myself and listen in secrecy. Talk about space age, the whole song is simply vocals with a harmonizer effect and it still manages to capture and entertain like a full out orchestra. I was skeptical about this remix at first given my infatuation but Swiss producer DVW (Dominik Von Werdt) did this song justice with tasteful and simplistic production, kudos because maintaining this songs integrity is not an easy task. Good remix. Enjoy.

Where are we? What the hell is going on?”

Rye Rye – Bang (Feat. M.I.A.)

A good friend of mine has been trying to get me exited about the Baltimore music scene for quite sometime now, so I started looking into it and ran into a very promising young female rapper called Rye Rye. In my search I came to find out I wasn’t the only one looking, in fact I’m a little late. Rye Rye happens to be the first artist signed to M.I.A.’s N.E.E.T. label and is one of the main reasons Mia came out of her so called retirement last year. So what does Rye sound like? Well on this song she sounds like a machine gun that manages to make out words. He delivery is intense, energetic and fierce, a little young sounding but not to the point where it’s annoying. Her cadences certainly remind of M.I.A. but that’s partly due to the Diplo style productions she’s selecting. EMPT favorite. Bang!
