Bat For Lashes – Pearl’s Dream (New Video!)

Alter ego’s are nothing new when it comes to musicians, from Beyonce’s beyond corny Sasha Fierce, Eminem’s dark side Slim Shady, to Garth Brooke’s alternative rock weirdo Chris Gaines and now Bat For Lashes’ sinister blonde rendition Pearl. First of all, I started cracking up with the dramatic introduction of Pearl in this video. A blonde Natasha Khan looks like a strange creature from another dimension, but then again I think that’s the effect they were going for.

This is clearly a new version of Pearl’s Dream, the version on Two Suns isn’t as involved rhythmically. The producers did the same for the video version of Daniel, which also differs in terms of arrangement and drums. Yet another extremely creative and entertaining video from Bat for Lashes, enjoy.

So I’ve been a little bored of the new stuff lately and as I was just about to head back into the comfort of the past for today’s post I got an email from Steph Lund (Le Miel du Mois) telling me to check out the latest from The Twelves. As usual, they nail the remix/cover and while not as hype as most their works, it completely holds up in quality.  If you haven’t heard of The Twelves by now I highly recommened going to town on google and checking them out. They are an extremely gifted production duo from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a nack for making some of the best remixes you’ll hear. I skipped the A-Ha remix they did because it was getting blogged about too much but I’ll use this new song as an excuse to post it because it’s pretty damn good. Enjoy.

Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy (Air France Remix)

For those who may not know, Air France is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden. They’ve released two critically acclaimed EP’s - On Trade Winds and No Way Down, I highly recommened both. I know I posted an Air France song yesterday but I’ve been on a complete binge so naturally the blog is going to reflect that. Like most Air France stuff, this song makes your feel like your on a beach some other place, somewhere, some other time. Pretty much the only musical act that can completely change my state of mind on call is Van Morrison, but I have say that Air France’s care-free style gets pretty close. The summer couldn’t come fast enough! Enjoy.

Bat For Lashes – Daniel

A lot of blogs out there just post new stuff for the sake of posting so I’ve been waiting to write about Daniel, a fantastic song that deserves more than 2 minutes of my time. I’m starting to question if these publishers even listen to music anymore, you go on the sites and all you get is “Here’s the new Bat For Lashes video! So Cool!” It’s a damn shame. To quote Jay-Z when he was good, “Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?” Anyways, back to the lecture at hand…

“I got fed up of everyone thinking I was this mystical creature that drinks unicorns’ tears for breakfast!” If the new album “Two Suns” was supposed to be an answer to that, I’d have to give her a thumbs up, because she managed to it without compromising anything that made her unique. I for one was a huge fan of the dark, theatrical and eerie story telling, I can listen to it all day. “What’s A Girl To Do” from her first album is in my Top 5 love songs, all which I require to have a deep understanding of the complex, intense and necessary love/”hate” emotions one has for a real significant other. Mix that in with the creepy 1970’s horror film production and next thing you know I’m at the record store buying all your CD’s…

Phoenix – Lisztomania

Phoenix’s fourth studio album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix isn’t due till May 2009, which is why posting the first song from the album on March 9th is bound to get us a slap in the wrist. But were willing to take the risk if your willing to take the interest. Buy the album when it comes out!

1901 was leaked a few weeks ago and it pretty much dominated the blogosphere for a good week. Here’s Lisztomania, and equally good maybe even better song from the new album. Enjoy.

Calvin Harris – I’m Not Alone

Just got the new Calvin Harris single and let me just say this song is sure to be the rage. It starts off sounding like a depressed, just lost my girlfriend acoustic guitar crybaby song, only to do a complete 360 into straight up 90’s big chord trance. With everyone in full blown 80’s mode, here come the 90’s!

Kid Cudi – Sky May Fall (Produit par Kanye West)

Had this song for a while now but never got to posting it. It’s from the martians upcoming album, Man On The Moon: The Guardians, which Kanye calls, “a classic in the making.” I would have to agree. Cudi’s mellow dramatic style is refreshing in the face of all the dance music dominating the market. Kanye did a great job on the production as it is simple and serves more as a canvas for Cudi than an impressive production. In typical Cudi style the lyrics are very reflective in nature, uplifting while at the same time embracing realities, the key to having true perspective, enjoy.

The Go! Team – Huddle Formation

Cheerleader chants, fast drumming, 90’s guitars and great melodies. That’s The Go! Team at face value, dig a little deeper and you will find extremely creative use and manipulation of samples, ingenious blending of styles and above all, great feeling music.

There are some songs that take a few listens before really striking a chord, Huddle Formation was not one of those songs, not for me at least. Great song from a great album. Heavy of the cheerleading, enjoy. EMPT favorite.

The Buzzcocks – What Do I Get

With all my friends going from drunk party animals to grandparents overnight, I’m finding it more and more important to indulge in music that keeps things feeling young, fresh and inspiring. Face it, everything was just more magical prior to worrying about jobs and getting married before you you get too old came into the picture. With that said here’s one of my favorite i love you/hate you songs by the kings of adolescent spirt, The Buzzcocks. The song is called What Do I Get, it’s a pop punk classic from their 1978 LP, Another Music in a Different Kitchen. Great video, great song.
