Carly Simon – Nobody Does it Better (The Spy Who Loved Me)

So I’ve been on a James Bond binge lately and let me just say, the exotic locations, the not only beautiful but unique women, the cars, the luxury, the class, I mean it’s no wonder why it’s one of the longest running and most successful film franchises to date.

Anyways, while watching The Spy Who Loved Me last night I thought that given how my romantic exploits these day would most closely resemble those of a  007, what could be more suiting than posting a Bond theme for Valentines Day. With that said here’s Nobody Does it Better, the theme from The Spy Who Loved Me, a very classy song of admiration, submission and appreciation. I’d imagine if you were in love this would be howboth parties would feel. Timeless song.

I wasn’t looking, but somehow you found me.
I tried to hide from your love light,
But like heaven above me, the spy who loved me,
Is keeping all my secrets safe tonight…
Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you, baby your the best.”

Ghostland Observatory – Stranger Lover

On their Myspace Ghostland Obervatorty describes their sound as “A robot making love to a tree!!” We’ll just leave it at that. Sad Sad City is probably their most commerically successful record, it’s from their 2006 release Paparazzi Lightning but I always find myself coming back to the space age love song Stranger Lover from the same album. Great production, tasteful use of the vocoder, great song.

Electric Tickle Machine – Gimme Money

This is song is bad ass. I’m gonna walk into all my meetings this week with Gimme Money playing in the background screaming gimme money bitches! Reminds of the Velvet Underground stuff, bold statement I know but certainly worthy of it.

Saw these guys perform out in Brooklyn a while back, the tambourine play is mean. Check out their Myspace for details. EMPT favorite, Wooo!

Chairlift – Don’t Give A Damn

First of all, I think Does You Inspire You is a brilliant album title. Second of all, Don’t Give a Damn is my favorite song on this album. The general consensus is that the song is about two juxtaposed lovers who are sick and tired of the nonsense etc. Given the concept romantic that I am I’ve taken the liberty of interpreting it as a general attitude toward any relationship, be it business or personal.

In the words of Van Morrison,“Meet them half way with love, peace and persuasion and expect them to rise for the occasion.” When they don’t, well, listen to this song, enjoy.

Department of Eagles – Love Me (Elvis Cover)

Here’s another song from the Starbucks Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs compilation. This time it’s the Department of Eagles covering Elvis’ Love Me. Great song.

Public service announcement to fellow dudes… After extensive testing and research I’ve concluded that chicks dig this album. So buy it for valentines day and shit. Puck off.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Stay Alive

So, NYC’s own The Pains of Being Pure at Heart released their self titled debut album last week and I have to say it’s pretty good. I was sent a promotional copy a few weeks back but just got around to really listening to it. It a noise pop album that sounds like it’s straight out of the 90′’s, very nostalgic. Here’s are some of the albums highlights, Stay Alive, Everything With You & Come Saturday. Good stuff.

Bloc Party – Your Visits Are Getting Shorter

The EMPT secret weapon Steph Lund reminded me of a great but highly overlooked Bloc Party track called Your Visits Are Getting Shorter. The track is from Bloc Party’s third album Intimacy and is probably so neglected because it was released as a bonus track in the digital release of the album. Nevertheless, its actually one of the stronger tracks from the work and certainly worth a few listens. I’ve had it on repeat for the last 30 minutes or so.

I didn’t watch the Grammy’s but I saw this.

Jem – Yellow (Coldplay Cover)

Ok so I heard about the Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs project a while back and wasn’t too worked up about another covers album. Then I heard the Jem’s cover of Yellow and quickly changed my mind. Given how overplayed the original was I didn’t think it was possible to hear the song in a new light but cudos to Jem for making that possible. The album is due on Valentines day and is being exclusively released by Starbucks. Download.

Passion Pit – Smile Upon Me

Word on the street is Passion Pit played at Bowery last night and revealed three new songs from their upcoming LP. I unfortunately missed it, instead I spent the night being a workaholic – the gift & the curse. We posted Sleepyhead last week and figured posting Smile Upon Me would make us feel better about missing the concert, enjoy. Passion Pit on the rise. Incredible sound, song & production, enjoy.
