Don't you hate it when something really exciting happens and you aren't allowed to talk about it. These are all things I will be able to share in the near future, I don't like surprises but that's the way it goes sometimes. Fuck it's like the moment I turned 30 and things just started falling into place. 20's were the "make mistakes but make sure you are also working hard at whatever it is you love to do." Get your heart broken, clean up the mess, pick yourself back up and do it all again until you hit 30 if ...
EXGF – We Are The Hearts (Premiere)
We Are The Hearts...
Have you ever denied yourself the opportunity to make the right decision? i.e. You know shouldn’t take a job for the money, you know the person you’re with isn’t right for you, but you do it anyway, you carry on for the wrong reasons. What makes us so reluctant to choosing our nobler influences and why are we ruled by habitual vices, weak to our desires?
Those are tough questions but often times it’s our own ego hidden in the form of intellect that gives credence to our ego supported qualities. The intellect is nothing more than a middle man ...
Parra For Cuva feat. Anna Naklab – Wicked Games (Original Mix)
The original "Wicked Games" by Chris Isaak has to be one of my favorite songs, the lyrics, and the luring strums of the guitar, it's so effortlessly beautiful and timeless. So when I heard this original mix from Parra For Cuva & Anna Naklab I fell in love all over again. I can shamelessly say that I am in love and it doesn't matter with what or with who, so you can just keep on guessing, but the original is what plays in my head on a weekly basis, and now depending on my mood I now have two versions ...
Marina & The Diamonds – Starring Role
I've been a little under the weather the past few days but I guess that's just the time of year that's why I always like to find new tunes that are a little more upbeat but still have an aggressive message, I just think the majority of us are feeling a little more aggression around this time.
Marina & The Diamonds really hit home lyrically in this track. I have to always stop and remind myself that maybe when we feel a distance from someone in our lives or anything in general its not necessarily us, but maybe the weather or ...
Almost a year of being released as a single MGMT has finally unveiled a new video for their fantastic but extremely overplayed song Kids.
Control yourself, take only what you need from it.â€
Those simple yet profound lyrics have been somewhat of a mantra for me since I first heard the song. Having grown up traveling and living a great but somewhat out of the ordinary lifestyle has made it difficult for me to be a part of the whole 9 to 5 institution, these simple words have helped me simplify when habit makes me feel otherwise. This video features Joanna Newson as a young, wealthy and neglecting mother who can’t seem to realize her child has an extraordinary imagination that has him seeing disturbing monsters and funny Eunuchs. Speaking of Eunuchs, I completely broke down laughing when he runs into MGMT dressed as silver Eunuchs singing Kids in the woods. I’m pretty sure this little kid will be tormented for the rest of his life after playing this role and I expect much criticisim to hit MGMT, either way its a cool concept and great execution, enjoy.
The intro to this song is noticeably similar to one of my favorite MGMT songs, Time To Pretend. However, that’s where the similarities end and an amazing song about rejuvenating begins. In martial arts there is a fighting style known as Druken Style. Dating back to the Sung Dynasty it is a style in which the fighter mimics the rolling, unpredictable motion of a drunken man to deceive his opponent into thinking he is incapacitated by a drunken stupor. The way lead singer Cole Alexander sings in Starting Over would be the musical equivalent of Drunken Style. His performance offers feelings of hope and sadness as he wabbles through the track anthematically claiming a new beginning, very cool. I think I went through my starting over phase about a month ago but I still get hyped up by the song. Flower Punk at it’s best, enjoy.
In typical Kelley Polar form, this song is extremely weird, creepy and confusing but as interesting and addictive as they come. Given title “Chrysanthemum†(mushroom cloud analogy) and lyrics (â€Two atoms kiss and what a funny valentineâ€) I think this song is about a nuclear attack on humanity, tragic. The chorus is nothing short of fu@$%d up goodness.
Make a chrysanthemum of every human head
Make a chrysanthemum and kill them in their beds
Make a chrysanthemum till everybody’s deadâ€
I’ll be posting more from Kelley, his latest album I Need You to Hold on While the Sky Is Falling has been in heavy rotation. Very space age, very good.
Just got an email from the good folks over at NBC informing us that Lykke Li will be performing on Last Call With Carson Dalytonight. I’m not quite the noctambule I am during party season but I’m certainly staying up to watch this. In the mean time it looks like I’ve found an excuse to post another Lykke Li song. Here’s Breaking it Up, one of the many fabulous songs from Youth Novels. Great breakup song, I like her perspective.
Now call you baby I will and I do.
Persuade you in though I know that were through.
I let you think that I’m your but I’m not.
Keep You here though I’m ready to drop the last line…
If your going abroad I can’t help you.
If your crossing the street I might be there.â€
I’d have to say of all the trends sprouting up recently, my eye has the biggest affinity for Marrakesh Express or in more common parlance, Ali Baba Pants. Given how all my ex girlfriends have had considerably bohemian chic infused styles, my obsession with silk bedding and overall inclination to anything that reminds me of James Bond’s Octopussy, it’s no surprise I’d be attracted to the style.
Now there are some designs I’m seeing that I think the world could do without but overall this trend has grand potential. At it’s best this artistic clothing can look loose while remaining elegant and sexy; Comfortable and classy, perhaps even regal. I’d imagine achieving all these effects at once is not an easy task for a girl. I personally find many of my aesthetic desires being met when around beautiful girls in it – fresh. Overall a glamorous and inspiring style, let’s hope it’s not butchered before it reaches it’s potential. Here are some of my favorite designs.
Would you know were riding, on the Marrakesh Express… All aboard the train.”
New mixtape from J. Period & Q-Tip. The production quality of old school Tribe is unmatched in the laptop producer age, it’s very refreshing to hear some good old analog in the space age. Download the mixtape here.
Ayo a few new stations put me in rotation.
They’ve embraced the martian, congratulations.â€
I’m not usually into mash-ups but my friend Will sent me this a few weeks ago and I thought it was great. Dead Prez is an underground hip-hop group known for their socially conscious and politically charged lyrics. Though never achieving much commercial success they’ve garnered incredible respect and street credibility from both fans and fellow artist. Hip Hop, the most well known song from their 2000 LP Let’s Get Free, is an attack on the commercialization and exploitation of hip hop. This song was written in 2000 so the downfall of Hip Hop had already begun with the questionable leadership of Puff Daddy and post Hard Knock Life Jay-Z. Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear is a great song, I won’t say much about it so the focus remains on the Dead Prez lyrics, but enjoy the mash-up, we don’t post many.
Anyone know what car that is? I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this picture and Mirando is more than a reasonable one. The production on this track is technical mastery. 8 Bit bounce anyone? Enjoy.
“The future for us is about making many more records and not getting attached to any certain process of music making. We always want a good challenge. We never want to be locked into any certain genre or whatever.â€
Similar to Bat For Lashes’ Daniel, Telepathe’s So Fine is the more accessible single from an album full of experimentation and avant-garde weirdness. This song, along with a few others on Telepathe’s new album Dance Mother, was produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek and his influence could be more prevalent. Haunting synths, dark landscapes and supreme creativity all while providing the essential bang bang element. Great video and great track from one of our favorite Brooklyn crews, enjoy.
Apparently it’s July, welcome. A lot happened for us in June, we had the most traffic EMPT had ever seen and got shut down in the same month. Our diabolical hosting company Gisol Inc. stole our website and content so we’ve had to rebuild from scratch – no easy task. But atlas there is light at the end of the tunnel and what could be more suitable to celebrate our return then announcing the July version of Steph Lund’s beloved Le Miel du Mois! With that said, here is an excerpt from Steph hinting at the masterminding that helps create this tape:
Le Miel du Mois: Juillet: With the constant rain in June and thinking about the intense heat on its way, this mix reflects the restlessness of summer.
Spotlight Track: The last track is from Paris based artist Three Leaves and a Head – a remix of Radiohead’s Reckoner, off the In Rainbows album. I first heard of Three Leaves and a Head from We All Want Someone To Shout For.
Remixes of Radiohead are a bit touchy for me, because I don’t see how most tracks can improve, however, these subtle enhances Three Leaves and a Head accomplished are really beautiful and a perfect way to end this mix. Check out Three Leaves and a Head’s Myspace page which also includes a remix of Nude.
