The Gossip – Are You That Somebody? (Aaliyah Cover)

I felt like some Aaliyah today and this remix is does a lot of justice.  Throwing you all a bomb EMPT classic on this beautiful Super Bowl Sunday, let the game begin!

First of all, this cover is absolute fire.

Aaliyahs Are You That Somebody is one of the most stylish R&B tracks you’ll ever hear. It was so ahead of it’s time for 1998 that only in the last 3 or 4 years has contemporary R&B really surpassed it’s innovation. The song showcased the talen of a young Timbaland, Static Major and Aaliyah, sadly two of those 3 have passed away but not without leaving their mark. That said, it takes some style, personality and a big voice to cover such a song and The Gossip’s Beth Ditto is lacking in none of those departments. The Gossip flips this jam to perfection opting for a minimalist drum and bass production putting Beth front and center. There’s so much over production these days that it’s rare to find a song where it’s all about an artist and pure expression. Beth reinvented this song in the best way possible and I had to share with you all. R.I.P. Aaliyah & Static Major.

Tourist – Your Girl

your girl

It’s pretty early here in New York. I’ve been in and out of sleep, and for whatever reason I can’t seem to fall into my sleep space. These are the kind of nights I hate to love. I know sleep is important, but there’s just something so liberating about being the only one awake in your apartment- let alone the city that supposedly never sleeps (all my friends are dreaming judging by the lack of little green dots next to my Facebook buddy list and the zero text message responses). I’m not complaining, though. The Empire State Building has turned off its lights and I’ve turned to a cup of tea and a song that embodies the phrase “dreaming wide awake.” It’s at this hour that I feel like my mind is at its most awake moment. I can think clearly with the world outside my window at a relative standstill. Perspective is actually in reach and the only thing distracting me are the numbers on my clock creeping towards the set alarm time. Time, however, is man-made and at this point in the night I feel free enough to ditch those glowing red numbers and focus on what’s happening in front of and around me. It’s a little lie, but the world is mine in this moment.

William Phillips, the name behind Tourist, has crafted a soundscape worthy of insomniac nights. He chops up Aaliyah’s “If your girl only knew” lyrics and spins them over an ambient synth and percussion line that melts into your atmosphere. Each layer of Phillips’ track creeps in, crescendoing itself into your consciousness before dissolving back into the air. It’s a track that simply weaves its way through “time” – softly carrying you through its lush landscape before fading away from your audio periphery. I’ve written earlier this month about songs that you dissolve with, but this is track that dissolves into you. It’s a track that lulls and calms you for no other reason but it’s blatant “I am sound” message. Andy Warhol once said that if we wanted to know who Andy Warhol was we only need to look at the surface of his paintings and there he was. The same idea goes for this track. If we want to know what music truly is we only need to listen to this track and feel the sound not only washing over us, but becoming us.

Kevin Casey’s Sample Saturday – Aaliyah et Drake

Drake has made his admiration and respect for Aaliyah very clear through various interviews, so it seemed appropriate for a record on his debut album to use a sample from Aaliyah’s debut album.  After being signed to Jive Records at the age of 15, the beautiful and talented Aaliyah was introduced to singer/producer R.Kelly who would end up being her mentor and also the lead songwriter and producer on her debut, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number. He and his protege singer spent countless hours in the studio, molding her raw vocal talent into the sound of a young superstar. Fueled by two hit singles, the album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 3 million copies (wow – a number 18 album these days would be lucky to break 50 thousand).  The first single was “Back and Forth” and the second was Drake’s choice “At Your Best (You Are Love)”.  Like many other special artists we have lost, it’s hard not to imagine the heights her career would have reached by the present day.

Constructed by Drake’s lethal studio weapons, Noah “40” Shebib and Boi-1da, “Unforgettable” starts and ends with the Aaliyah sample. They probably chose “At Your Best” because it contained a soothing acapella section, giving them a lot of flexibility in production. Aaliyah’s vocals are layered with some smooth pads and a nice chord progression that is used as the musical base for the song.  Since her part is a repetitive “Let Me Know…”, it may also have been the basis for the concept of the record. Basically, let Drizzy know if he’ll really be unforgettable.  Can’t forget my girl Rachel for her help with this one.
