EMPT Presents – Wet Dreams #1 by Barry Poppins

We all want so much man, over achievement and extreme ambition are glorified and admired almost universally these days but have you ever stopped to ask why?…

Hustle, hustle, hustle. Grind, grind, grind. Why does everyone got hustle on their mind?”

MIA was something else back then, I remember first hearing that hook and questioning everything. I won’t get into all that right now now but always remember to look around your environment and question what you see. Just because everyone is doing something, just because it’s tradition, culturally revered or whatever doesn’t mean it’s truth. Think about it, if the massive amounts of cultural influence, media and tradition we’rent around to sway would you care about the same things? Sometimes you have to press pause on the Human Drama and give your mind a break to formulate it’s own path. Which brings me to the subject of todays post, the Wet Dreams #1 by Barry Poppins, a former EMPT writer that returns with a downtempo/chill mix worthy of boss caliber reflection and relaxation. This mix isn’t made for Friday or Saturday night, this is strictly for downtime, Sunday chillin’ folks. I’ve had it running top to bottom for the last hour and I gotta say the kids downtempo song selection is tight enough to rival the best of them. Anyhow, I’ve told half the story but the rest is from the maestro himself, press play on this one ASAP, enjoy…

In the 6 months, I’ve been exposed to more music crossing more genres than perhaps at any point in my life. It was both a blessing and a curse, that allowed me to hone in on the sounds that truly act as aural therapy for me. One of these sounds is a very cliche, five letter word: chill. The great part about this genre, I’ve discovered, is that chill out music is not confined to one genre. So many artists across so many different “genres” and decades and continents create an array of music on a daily basis. But if you examine every prolific group or artist’s catalogue thoroughly enough, odds are you’ll find a soothing, relaxing track somewhere.

These are the types of songs that act as ear valium. Since being afflicted by the most gnawing, aggravating medical condition I’ve ever experienced–tinnitus–the need to listen to sparse, mellow, and just calming music has truly arisen. Tinnitus hurts the ear, yes, but it also tortures the soul and the mind. I’ve always been an anxious person, but this disease has made everything in life more difficult–going to clubs, talking on the phone, or just walking down the street. You hear voices, you hear a constant ringing, and you don’t ever know if it will come to an end.

As someone who’s constantly bombarded by stress–both self-inflicted and through external forces–it’s a sound without which I’d be helpless. Thus began my transformation of my musical diary/Tumblr into a very niche, and very mellow music blog, along with a mixture series I hope to update on a monthly basis. Loosely inspired by the White Light Series, and mainly by the overall need to decompress, take a deep breath, and be thankful for what I do have and can control in life, came The Pleasure Dome. I don’t know what, if anything, this little site will turn into. But I do know–as long as I can hear–I’ll be on the look out for the cream of the chill out crop. Without further ado: Welcome To The Pleasure Dome.

Rogue – Air (Summer Chords)

Lately, I’ve been feeling the ache of a seven day work stretch on top of the rest of life. Oh, and I had to visit the dentist today. As he was drilling into my teeth and I was drifting away on novacane, I thought about how quickly time slips away from us. I remembered this song and understood the urgency under the music. It’s almost a frantic beauty that wraps you up and won’t let go.

Meet Joel Hunt, the 21-year-old adorable Brit behind Rogue. He’s relatively new to the electro/dub/moombahton scene, his first tracks showing up just last fall. But he’s certainly making all the right noise so far. His stuff is pretty strictly instrumental which can be a nice release on a quiet summer day. Air (Summer Chords) feels a little like your floating around through some digital landscape. Look to your left and you might even see a pixelated unicorn.

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 1 a by Ryan Radler

Ryan sent me this last weekend when it was actually snowing in the city. It was Halloween weekend and all of a sudden there was miserable snow everywhere threatening to ruin all the crazy festivities. I DJ’d at Elle that and then somehow ended up in a Brooklyn warehouse Halloween party till like 9 the next day so I didn’t get to post this when it was most appropriate. Either way, the snow might be gone but old man winter is only getting started and for that reason it’s my pleasure to welcome back Mr. Radler and his new cold busting mix tape – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r. This is we’ve heard from Ryan since the last epic series and it’s absolutely wonderful. It starts off with Bombay by Guicho for crying out loud, it that’s not an instant mood changer I don’t know what is.. After that it’s just feel good after feel good so if you’re feeling down about this cold or the fact that it’s Monday this was made for you.

I love it when I can depend on something or someone for quality. For example, you buy an Apple product because you know it’s going to be good, you go to the best restaurant because you can expect them to deliver, athletes get paid the big bucks to perform at the time when everyone expects them to.

I see God in the instruments and mechanisms that work reliably.” – Buckminster Fuller

I’ve only known Ryan for a short time but his musical offerings have become synonymous with a unique, high quality listening experience and I love it. Anyways, press play on this one and feel good ASAP! Here are some words from the curator himself, enjoy.

Soooooo, my month break is up. It’s now fucking cold here in LA. I just took a spin in the car around Downtown LA and previewed this new Winter mix with the windows down and the cold night air whistling across my face. I have to admit, I am definitely a Summer kind-of-guy. But, I believe our wonderful world is one of balance and I suppose our 4 seasons should never be taken for granted. The music I have collected for this mix reminds me of the time of year when we get the first freeze. In one 32 degreed moment the plants and trees cease growing and begin shedding their leaves and seeds, nuts and berries. Rejuvenation in the cycle of life depends on the ebb and flow of the seasonal balance. May this mix represent a step in the direction of that idea.

***This first Winter mix is dedicated specifically to the East Coast with respect to the people who have been unfortunately affected by the unexpected, early winter weather.
Hopefully you can get this up before the snow melts!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars

Thanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world but your here with me! I appreciate that.”

It’s the first of the month and 2010 is looking better and better by the moment. February was a great month for EMPT, our following has never been stronger and our new company is only a few weeks away from launch (stay tuned). Maintaing EMPT is hard work and you barely get to take a break, that is until Steph sends me her latest masterpiece and I get to sit back and get it ready for release. After an entire month of work it’s sort of like dessert after a big meal, though when you’re dealing with Steph is more like dessert before dinner. Either way, this tape is yet another completely different and unique experience, LMDM will never get old, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Mars:
March. Today marks 17 days until forthebeat is at sxsw and 20 days until the first day of spring, both can’t come soon enough. This mix aims to get you through the last few weeks of winter with your dancing shoes laced up tight to dance through the night (yes this was meant to rhyme). One of my favorite new artists is Coma Cinema, if you havent listened to the album yet, better get on it fast. Making Pitchfork’s forkcast last month, this band is about to be everywhere – “Flower Pills” debuted on LMDM last month, and this month brings you “Cop Caller.” The entire album Baby Prayers can be downloaded for free at www.comacinema.org – get. it. now.

Air – So Light Is Her Footfall (Breakbot Remix)

I was watching a bad ass movie called Ichi about a sexy blind girl who also happens to be a master Samurai on a journey to find her teacher.  The beutiful Ichi walks around trying to mind her business but keeps running into all these bad guys that force her to show her skills and kill them. Throughout the movie there are these flashbacks that show the girls horrible past and why she’s so focused on her journey.

She’s all alone, alone, alone, alone…”

Anyways, throughout the movie this lonesome girl barely talks, doesn’t care for money and seems to have this level of understanding few even know exist. Everywhere she goes people are marveled by her skill as a Sumurai, and on top of all the she’s a musician. This is pretty much the girl of my dreams, too bad ass kicking noble-minded Kung-Fu girls only exist in the movies. Anyways, this remix of So Light Is Her Footfall should have been the closing credits or something, the songs lyrics depict a similar girl who also moves in darkness and mystery and it couldn’t be more fitting, enjoy.

The Twelfth Hour

The Twelves

Will someone please explain to me the phenomenon that is time while at work? Doesn’t it feel like right before you get to work time is flying and you can’t move fast enough but the second you sit down it’s like you go into some alternate world and it takes an hour for 5 minutes to pass. Work sucks huh? You know what, I really like the concept of that new Bruce Willis movie. We should have robots that represent us at work while we do important things like thinking of more ways to use robots and not do anything. That probably won’t happen today so I’ve got a little something to help you day dream and procrastinate more than you already do…

The Twelves released a new 60 minute mixtape two days ago and I think my friend Ben’s facebook message describes it best: “new 12s mixtape = predictable amazingness.”  This is the followup to their previous mixtape Episode II, which I never got around to posting but will in the next week or so.  I’ve been listening to this all morning and it rocks, there’s really nothing else to say.  These guys just get it when it comes to song selection and production. The transitions from song to song are seamless, the mash-ups and remixes are top notch and the overall flow and feel is energetic and entertaining all throughout.  it’s quite good.
