Tourist – Your Girl

your girl

It’s pretty early here in New York. I’ve been in and out of sleep, and for whatever reason I can’t seem to fall into my sleep space. These are the kind of nights I hate to love. I know sleep is important, but there’s just something so liberating about being the only one awake in your apartment- let alone the city that supposedly never sleeps (all my friends are dreaming judging by the lack of little green dots next to my Facebook buddy list and the zero text message responses). I’m not complaining, though. The Empire State Building has turned off its lights and I’ve turned to a cup of tea and a song that embodies the phrase “dreaming wide awake.” It’s at this hour that I feel like my mind is at its most awake moment. I can think clearly with the world outside my window at a relative standstill. Perspective is actually in reach and the only thing distracting me are the numbers on my clock creeping towards the set alarm time. Time, however, is man-made and at this point in the night I feel free enough to ditch those glowing red numbers and focus on what’s happening in front of and around me. It’s a little lie, but the world is mine in this moment.

William Phillips, the name behind Tourist, has crafted a soundscape worthy of insomniac nights. He chops up Aaliyah’s “If your girl only knew” lyrics and spins them over an ambient synth and percussion line that melts into your atmosphere. Each layer of Phillips’ track creeps in, crescendoing itself into your consciousness before dissolving back into the air. It’s a track that simply weaves its way through “time” – softly carrying you through its lush landscape before fading away from your audio periphery. I’ve written earlier this month about songs that you dissolve with, but this is track that dissolves into you. It’s a track that lulls and calms you for no other reason but it’s blatant “I am sound” message. Andy Warhol once said that if we wanted to know who Andy Warhol was we only need to look at the surface of his paintings and there he was. The same idea goes for this track. If we want to know what music truly is we only need to listen to this track and feel the sound not only washing over us, but becoming us.

The Velvet Underground – I’m Waiting For The Man

When this album was released in 1967 it was largely ignored. Fools. Since then it has been recognized as one of the most influential and critically lauded rock albums in history. It was recorded in 1966 during  Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, which I wont even try to describe. Don’t know if it was the drugs, the nihilism, the times or what but the feeling you get from this music truly something else.

Hey white boy, what you doin’ uptown?
Hey white boy, you chasin’ our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it’s the furthest from my mind
I’m just lookin’ for a dear, dear friend of mine
I’m waiting for my man…”

Lou Reed – Walk On The Wild Side

Most of you will recognize this song as the sample for Tribe Called Quest’s Can I Kick It; while I think the Tribe song is an creative and energetic reinvention, it’s pale in comparison to the quaint and haunting original. Take A Walk On The Wild Side was the surprise hit single from Lou Reed’s solo debut Transformer, and was produced by David Bowie, a big fan of Reed. In typical Velvet fashion, the songs lyrics are as unorthodoxed and elcletic as they come; covering topics like drugs, oral sex, race, male prostitutes and transexuality. As a member of The Velvets, Reed was very involved with Andy Warhol and the debauchery that came a long with it. In fact, some of the characters referred to in this song  are Andy’s “superstars.” With lyrical content so trite these days if find myself caught up in the more psychedelic and creative eras of music. For those of you who don’t listen to lyrics worry not, the songs quirky and infectious bass line is usually what lures most in.

Lou Reed – Walk On The Wildside

There are two bass sounds happening at once, a double-bass and a fretless bass guitar. Secondly, the musicians are playing a major tenth interval, a quirky and unusual decision at the time, enjoy.

New York City is the place where they said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.”

Island Life

And were back… I spent a very long weekend out in Nantucket hanging out in beaches and picnicking in pastures, so let’s just I’m not exactly thrilled about returning to the concrete jungle but so it goes. I’ve vowed to spend the entire summer next year far away from New York City so I’m posting a song which pretty much explains how I feel in when I’m on island and doing it my way…

One time super model, actress and Andy Warhol muse, one can help but wonder when or how Grace Jones ever found the time to actually be a recording artist. Yet she did, and she did it well. La Vie En Rose is one of my favorite songs of all time. It is overwhelmingly romantic, glamorous and dreamy. The album it appears on is called Island Life, a title which couldn’t be more appropriate for this song. The track is an instrumental till about 2 minutes into the song, a rare and risky production decision that couldn’t be more fitting. Enjoy.
