Beach House – White Moon (JAQUES Remix)

Beach House has provided a steady flow of a particular brand of dream pop for the last eight years and, most recently, released its fourth studio album Bloom on Sub Pop. It some cases, however, its refreshing to revisit something you may have missed or just forgot. White Moon was released in 2010 on an iTunes Session EP, and previous to this remix, I had never heard it.

Vocalist Victoria Legrand carries a deep, soothing resonance while she plays the keyboard and Alex Scally maintains a bright constancy on guitar. Beach House, for me, has always been for that quiet afternoon of reflection or for moments when solitude seems the only option. But JAQUES opens up a new door for White Moon. He adds some grit and bite to the originally sentimental tone, and the confusion and heartbreak of the lyrics is felt a little deeper.

Down the hill I looked so fast
Feel the moon, it doesn’t last
Troubled boy and lucky girl
Bring me back into your world

Call your name when you are gone
Longest night before the dawn
Hard to catch this side of you
Do you want me two on two?

White moon beam on my back.”

JAQUES is out of Austin, TX and has been relatively quiet since last year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he hits me soon with something just as tastefully, groove-worthy as this. Enjoy the weekend, and don’t dance too hard.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Juillet 2012

If you haven’t noticed by now EMPT is in a new era. Some have noticed the new direction and expressed concern but in my mind if you’re not getting better you’re getting worse. Sometimes you have to be a little disruptive to move forward and break your comfort zone which may be keeping you stuck in a certain place or patten. Think of a company like RIM, what they were doing in their glory days was awesome, they innovated the smartphone yet they rested on their laurels and never disrupted their own patterns. Instead they let another company come along and do it for them. Steve Jobs always said it’s better to cannibalise your own products with something newer and better than let your competition do it for you, I couldn’t agree more.

That said, we’ve destroyed our old ways to rebuild something brand new and now we’re giving you more music than ever, more variety and more perspective yet it’s all still within the taste and style of the EMPT you know and love. We’ve got an all-star team of writers, Ryan Radler bringing nothing but mixtape greatness, Mollie keeping things going and oh did I forget to mention we still have Steph Lund’s beloved Le Miel du Mois on our roster…

Let’s take it to the basics, you in the midst of greatness,
My Martin was a Maison rock Margielas with no laces…” – VSVP Rocky

So here we are another Monday, another installment of LMDM and it’s fantastic – tell me something new. As usual Steph covers the full spectrum constantly taking us to and fro bittersweet love, desperation, lust, hope, dance, chill out, summer times, good times, you name it. I can’t stress this enough, do not let your microwave listening habits interfere with experiencing this tape. Every single song was selected and sequenced a certain way for your listening pleasure so do yourself a favor, press play and let take on the LMDM experience, you won’t regret it. Enjoy.

Diamonds, pearls, they feel alright. when i see you standing there, the evening sun upon your hair. covered up with garden dirt. with just one glance you tear my skirt.”

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 d by Ryan Radler

Warm enough yet? I think so and apparently so does Ryan Radler who is back in full effect with one of EMPT’s most treasured possessions, the 2012 collectors dream – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r. Or the best warm weather mixtape you’ll hear anywhere

This is incredible compared to anything else out there, it looks like it’s from another planet! – Steve Jobs

That’s how the tape starts and I won’t be the one to disagree. I don’t say that because we’re presenting it but because the time, energy and emotion captured in it says so. While we’re on the subject of Apple…

One of the things we’ve really learnt over the last 20 years is that while people would often struggle to articulate why they like something – as consumers we are incredibly discerning, we sense where has been great care in the design, and when there is cynicism and greed. It’s one of the thing we’ve found really encouraging. – Johnathan Ivy

Translation – you can’t fake the funk. Weather it’s song selection, transitions, delightful quotes or the unexpected curve balls (THE TONY HATCH ORCHESTRA – Bedazzled?! Word) the care and effort Ryan puts in to these shows. It’s one thing to make a tape full of what everyone is listening to already but it’s another to offer something new, challenge peoples taste and enlighten them – This is incredible compared to anything else out there. I could seriously talk about this all day because it really is the best and it makes me very proud that EMPT is bringing it to you. I’ve said it before but I can’t stress it enough, let it play as it was intended. I know all you ADHD having fools like skimming through music but do yourself some justice, press play and take a ride, enjoy.

S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 d :

ARCADE FIRE – Sprawl II (Damien Taylor Remix)
BROTHERTIGER – Lovers (Casa del Mirto Remix)
BEACH HOUSE – Equal Mind
THE TONY HATCH ORCHESTRA – Bedazzled
ABADABAD – California Birds

BILLIE HOLIDAY – Speak Low (Bent Remix)
PORCELAIN RAFT – Drifting In and Out
MO KOLOURS – Mini Culcha (Beautiful Swimmers Remix)
MOON BOOTS – Got Somebody
LOVER LOVER – Embers
FM ATTACK – I Saw Her Dancing
METRONOMY – The Bay (Clock Opera Remix)

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A by Ryan Radler

Ah yes Monday, Sunday’s hangover returns once again…

In recent news, the S&P downgraded the U.S. Credit and apparently no one knows what that means, the stock market is in shambles and it’s only getting worse, Big Boy from Outkast got arrested on drug charges, great times all around my friends. Thankfully, Mondays on EMPT now mean the release of a new Ryan Radler mixtape and let me tell you folk, there’s nothing like some good music to keep your perspective in these times. Last week Ryan sent me an email kicking it about the inception of these wonderful mixes and I’m posting here because it sounds like me an all of my friends every weekend and listening to the tapes it couldn’t make more sense. Anyways, I gotta go work on the music for a few restaurants but press play on another wonderful mixtape, check out Ryan on Facebook and try to ignore the 25% loss on your portfolio, it will get better as usual. Enjoy.

Back in my loft, I began dreaming of Summers-gone-by. I remembered one of my favorite summers back in 2008 in Van Nuys, CA.
1. Crashed random friend’s house + Belonged to gay x-pornstar (Scariest/Nicest guy I ever met)
2. One very clean, but very ghetto “above ground” Pool + Floating blow-up chairs
3. Blistering hot valley sun + Not a cloud in the sky!
4. 12 pack of Corona + 12 slices of lime
5. The Bestest of Friends + One great little Basenji Dog named “Ghost”
6. The “Western Electric” Summer mix PodCast + A really powerful set of surround-sound computer speakers
Item #1 through #5 were enough to make the day a perfect “10”, but it was #6- my friends’ Summer mix music on the stereo- that made the day live on in my mind, Without the music that made the soundtrack of my Summer, I might have forgotten all about this glorious time in my life. The mix was filled with summery Rock & Roll, Electronic, and Folk music infused with 70’s loungy vintage organs and horns with conga breakdowns and dirty jazz tones.. The podcast spoke to me. It reached out and grabbed me by the floaties and slowly drifted me around the pool. It popped the caps of my beers. It took all my calls and forwarded them to voicemail. It held my hand and kissed me on the cheek and told me everything would be alright- and it was.
I have searched high and low for this mix, but to no avail. No one seems to know where it came from or how to get it back. It was at this moment that I decided that instead dropping into my usual winter depression, I would begin my own homage to this one summer day and resurrect the Summer mix that I had loved so much back in Van Nuys.

S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A :

1. Jump in the Pool – FRIENDLY FIRES
2. Make You Mine – MIAMI HORROR
3. Pacific Theme – BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
4. Un Homme Et Une Femme (Chant) – FRANCIS LAI
5. New Theory – WASHED OUT (RAC MIX)
6. Lisztomania – PHOENIX (Classixx Version)
7. Only Love Can Break Your Heart – I BLAME COCO
8. Puppets – DEPECHE MODE (ROYKSOPP REMIX)
9. Glad to Know You – CHAZ JANKEL
10. Heaven’s On Fire – THE RADIO DEPT.
11. Rad Racer – WORK DRUGS
12. Solitude Is Bliss – TAME IMPALA (MICKEY MOONLIGHT REMIX)
13. Zebra – BEACH HOUSE (RING TRACK REMIX)

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Janvier 2011

I’ve gotten a few email and seen a couple of comments from people asking why we didn’t do a best of 2010 list. Steph finally sent me an answer to that question in the form of a mixtape because we no speak best of 2010 list, we speak music over here. We’re getting a lot of new visitors these days so if you’re not familiar with LMDM I couldn’t think of a better way to get acquainted with the queen of style.

Steph was hitting home runs in 2010, brining us something completely fresh and new for 12 months straight. I’m certainly the biggest LMDM fan and if anyone thinks different we can take this outside and see whose boss! Seriously though, I think I speak for all fans in saying that we appreciate the work Steph puts into these tapes. There’s no question in my mind that LMDM is a labor of love, there’s so much thought and feeling put into it and it translates to everyone that hears it. We appreciate it Steph and look forward to another year of magic…

Yes, this is about mid month 15ish days late…but still, its here. The list below is a special mix for the New Year/wrap-up of the beloved 2010. Instead of choosing my favorite tracks of 2010, I chose  special tracks and artists I featured throughout Le Miel du Mois’ this past year. Most blogs did their ‘best of ‘lists and I think a lot of us agree on what was amazing and what stood out, so rather than echo a round-up list, we thought we would do it a bit different – with a LMDM montage for you to download and here we are…

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars

Thanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world but your here with me! I appreciate that.”

It’s the first of the month and 2010 is looking better and better by the moment. February was a great month for EMPT, our following has never been stronger and our new company is only a few weeks away from launch (stay tuned). Maintaing EMPT is hard work and you barely get to take a break, that is until Steph sends me her latest masterpiece and I get to sit back and get it ready for release. After an entire month of work it’s sort of like dessert after a big meal, though when you’re dealing with Steph is more like dessert before dinner. Either way, this tape is yet another completely different and unique experience, LMDM will never get old, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Mars:
March. Today marks 17 days until forthebeat is at sxsw and 20 days until the first day of spring, both can’t come soon enough. This mix aims to get you through the last few weeks of winter with your dancing shoes laced up tight to dance through the night (yes this was meant to rhyme). One of my favorite new artists is Coma Cinema, if you havent listened to the album yet, better get on it fast. Making Pitchfork’s forkcast last month, this band is about to be everywhere – “Flower Pills” debuted on LMDM last month, and this month brings you “Cop Caller.” The entire album Baby Prayers can be downloaded for free at www.comacinema.org – get. it. now.

Beach House – Walk In The Park

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real disease (check WebMD) that affects dozens of people, maybe hundreds. To cope, some people take Vitamin D, some people use sun lamps, and some people drink themselves stupid.

But there’s a new way to get through these dark days of winter, to stay on the sunny side of life even when the outside world is gray and sad and miserable and you’ve gained so much weight since Thanksgiving that you can’t wear anything but leggings or tights.

Beach House’s new album Teen Dream is 10 tracks of sunshine, freshly-cut grass, wildflowers, puppy love, hand-holding, slow-dancing, first kisses, runs through open fields, suntans, fireworks, sepia-toned photographs, meaningful looks at deep bodies of water and general happiness.

After 24 hours of repeated listening, you’ll be thinner, happier and more beautiful than ever before.

Their sound is ethereal and vintage, executed with such emotion and passion you’d think this must be the creation of an epic love affair. (Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand claim they aren’t dating but listen to this record and judge for yourself, clearly they’re trying to pull an Rpattz/Kstew over our eyes, you are not just friends!)
