Matt Duncan – Beacon

I got friends in New York City…”

I’ve been on synth-pop overdrive as of late and my usual retreat from that is either some Northern Soul or piano driven song writers like Billy Joel, Elton etc. But this time around I’ve found a new artistby the name of Matt Duncan and his latest single Beacon could be more on point for my life’s current events. I’m in the middle of making a very big decision that would affect this blog, my companies, Et Musique Pour Tous, Noctambule and pretty much everything I have my hands in. I have a great opportunity to leave the big apple for some California love but it would really mean packing up everything, saying goodbye to my friends and hello to Hollywood.

I got friends in LA county…”

I’ve been spending a lot of time in LA and I tell you the normal paced sunshine lifestyle has a lot of advantages over the New York minute. The food is slamming, there are mountains, open skies, beaches and I’ve met some people that have a very good understanding on the future of music. I’ve been in show business my entire life and never far from the spotlight. I have a thing for putting on a show and at this point it’s safe to say that’s not going to change.

You always standing in the spotlight baby we know who you are.”

I’m going back to LA this weekend to check out some neighborhoods and get a feel for the town but until then it’s a million miles and running. It’s interesting to consider such a big move but let’s see which course the future will take, enjoy.

Don’t let the skyline fool you baby, you know what to do…

Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind (Part II)

Some folks like to get away, Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach Or to Hollywood
But I’m taking a Greyhound On the Hudson River Line
I’m in a New York state of mind.” – Billy Joel

I love the holidays, of course for all the traditional reasons but also for the simple fact that for those two or three days before and after Christmas New York City empties out and all you get is the city and that all too unfamiliar feeling of solely being around old school New Yorkers. I’ve been a hundred miles and running this entire year, the blog has gotten bigger then I ever could have imagined, my new company is about to be born, I’ve met tons of new people and I’ve worked and partied harder then I ever have. I was finally starting to feel the freedom that I no longer had to be in the city.

The thrill is gone, ooh the thrill is gone.” – B.B. King

A lot of people think love is this linear concept, meaning you fall in love and then your in love non-stop forever. However, I’ve always thought that part of love was losing your admiration for something, maybe even moving on and then suddenly finding a whole new world of reasons to fall in love all over again. So just as I felt like New York and I were going our separate ways I heard the Alicia Keys version of Empire State of Mind and found myself thinking about the city in a whole new light. Then I went back to the song that inspired the songs title, Billy Joel’s, New York State Of Mind. The song only real New Yorkers can decode and thats when my love for the big city was rejuvenated all over again.

A lot of people come to the city to make money and that’s the mentality that dominates the way many think here, whether people realize it or not, and it’s easy to get caught up in that paper chase. For some reasons this song reminded me what I stayed in New York to do, put on a mother f&$k#n’ show.

Someone sleeps tonight with a hunger for more then an empty fridge.”

So with 2010 on the horizon I’m getting ready to embark on some of the biggest risk my life has presented in hopes of taking my dedication to entertainment to a new level…

… Even if it ain’t all it seems I got a pocket full of dreams baby I’m from New York!”

But the more I think about all the risk, the more I get excited, the more I ask myself why I lust the big lights, the more I crave Broadway, the more I realize that it all comes to where I’m from. They say you have to learn it all just so you can forget it and live through your instincts, well…

I don’t have any reasons
I’ve left them all behind,
I’m in a New York state of mind”
