Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Juillet

This is really one of my dumbest flow’s ever, I haven’t slept in days…

I’ve been up for a good 27 straight at this point, I’m not sure. I went from a session with Fabolous on Wednesday night that ended at about 4 am, up again at 11AM for a meeting to finalize our new partnership to another session with Fab & R. Les that went till about 5 AM this morning. Of course I could have gone home to rest but I wanted to finish up the new LMDM for you guys before I leave for the holiday weekend – the show must go on. So many things are happening right now  and I’m so excited that I’ve literally lost the desire to sleep, I wouldn’t have it any other way. To all my partners, to Steph, to everyone who keeps making this life unforgettable, I appreciate everything we’re doing together, we’re really planting some big seeds, just a matter of time now!

I know that ni&@z would kill for this lifestyle, I’m looking forward to the memories of right now. Never forgetting where I came and no matter where I’m heading I promise to stay the same…”

– Drake (2010, Unforgettable)

Steph sent me this tape yesterday but as you can see there was no way I could have gotten it done but honestly this Friday morning/holiday weekend couldn’t be more appropriate for this sound. Just when all you mixtape makers thought you figured her out she smacks you in the face with yet another mad scientist blend of songs, tempos and genres only a music fiend of the highest level could conjur up.

I don’t follow any guidelines, cause too many ni&$z ride mine so change styles every two rhymes – Jay Z (1996, 22 Two’s)

Seriously though, Stephs got her own flow and it’s one of the reasons why LMDM has been such a big hit on this site and around the internet. All EMPT heads know what I’m talking about and if you’re now to this well then your in for a treat, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Julliet – I loooove summer for so many reasons. A reader from last year described one of the mixtapes like this: “like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” which I think also holds true to the Le Miel du Mois summer series of tapes for 2010. This entire mix is practically remixes, except a few, including the first track: When I first heard this Baby Jazz song called “The Song for the Season” with lyrics including “Yes, its Christmas time” I knew this was a perfect opener for the July mix… Happy Independence Month.

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Time of the Assassins (XXXChange Remix)

I was getting rid of a bunch of CD’s when I ran into Charlotte Gainsbourg’s 2009 release IRM. I only listened to this album for a few days when it was released so I’d completely forgotten how seductive, eclectic and edgy the album is, she definitely takes after her father when it comes to music. Beck produced, composed and co-wrote the album and it’s quite apparent as he successfully neglects all genres, styles, lines and categorizations while still making it accessible and easily understood.

Anyways, I burned the CD, threw it away and hit the internet to buy anything from her I didn’t have and that’s when I ran into the XXXChange remix of Time of the Assassins. This version is dark, has a slick bass line, moves, screams mystery and never get’s boring, XXXChange really used his imagination on this one because the original although great in it’s out right sounds nothing like this, fresh. I tell you man, the internet is like the ghost producer of music right not because it gets everyone remixing and reworking each others tracks and that type of collaboration and sharing of inspiration only leads to good things. Thriller is the greatest selling, most known album of all time and while Quincy was the guy who put it all together there where sooo many people working on that album, so many minds coming together, so many influences, so many masters that contributed that it’s only right it would reach so many people in return. Alright, I have to finish off this week before all the weekend madness and traveling begins but I’ll be back with something tomorrow, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre

That’s right fool, it’s December 1st and that means a new version of your favorite mixtape maker’s favorite mixtape: Steph Lund’s Le Miel du Mois: Decembre edition. I haven’t told Steph yet but she’s outdone herself yet again. There are so many different spices, seasonings and flavors in this that I think Raekwon is going to have to share the Chef nickname with someone from the new generation, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Decembre

Le Miel du Mois: Decembre features some of my favorite artists, some I have loved a long time (Bloc Party, Sebastien Tellier, Phoenix) and some new favorites (Telepathe, Delorean, Neon Indian). Four artists featured are French, in anticipation for my trip to Paris this month, enjoy and ecoutez: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sebastien Tellier, Phoenix and Soko. Soko is a French model/actress. I included her song “I’ll Kill Her” which first debuted in 2007, but came back in my life recently when listening to DJ AM’s “Elton John Part 3,” I can’t stop listening to it and wanted to include it on this month’s mix, because, well the lyrics are just kind of amazing: s’amuser.”
