The days are shorter and the nights are colder and we’re about to be pummeled by a megastorm that’s barreling towards the East coast. Rachel Brown is exactly what the doctor ordered. While perfectly exuding a familiar summery pop, Rachel carves her own niche with a signature voice and a band packed with talented African and Caribbean musicians. At any given moment, she’s supported on stage by a kora (played by the inimitable Yacouba Sissoko), talking drum, or calabash. The eclectic instrumentation hearkens back to her upbringing, being rooted in Ethiopian and Bermudan heritage.
She’s been an active part of the Indaba musical family this year, stopping by our loft to perform an intimate Mike Posner cover in anticipation of her performance in our CMJ showcase at The Living Room. Check out the cover below, part of Indaba Music’s ongoing video series:
