Broken Bells – Holding on for Life

Whoever had the idea for The Shins James Mercer and prolific producer Danger Mouse to get together…give that person a fucking medal. Broken Bells, their collaborative project, has released two fantastic albums, described by Rolling Stone as “left field pop” and by the guys as “experimental, but melodic too.”

“Holding on for Life,” off their new album “After the Disco” is the band’s best song yet. Mercer channels his inner Bee Gee’s, delivering one of his most powerful vocal performances of his illustrious career, while Danger Mouse harkens back to his Gorillaz production days, blending a pseudo-Asian synth line with a grunge guitar bridge straight out of nineties Seattle.

Both of these artists have made careers out of coaxing a positive feeling out of songs with troubling subject matter. At first listen, “Holding on for Life” feels like a fun LCD Soundsystem style dance-rock track, tugging at your marionette strings and getting your body jerking in that special indie way. But then you hear the minor notes, the noisy dissonance, the abstract exploration of loneliness. You almost feel bad for your initial happy reaction.

But not for long. The point of Broken Bells seems to be that it’s ok to smile when life isn’t going so well. It’s better to dance in front of your mirror than to mope in your room alone, even if you’re alone either way. Barry Gibbs and Elliott Smith can coexist. This song allows us feel the weight of the world without getting crushed. It encourages us to make eye contact with that beautiful stranger. To take the chance and worry later. Because if the world is falling to pieces around us, we may as well open our mouths to see how it tastes.

Danger Doom – Benzie Box (Opiuo Rework)

This brings me back to my teen years, scary how time flys by so quickly and yet we are still listening to the same tunes and trying to find ways to give them a little modern flavor without destroying the magic taste that it already possesses.

“The Mouse and The Mask” was a sick album to say the least and a collaboration of genius to put it lightly.  Danger Mouse and MF Doom, or Danger Doom, gave out hip-hop gold.  Methodical lyrics over solid heavy beats and production is something that can definitely be over looked today, Danger Doom has justice.  Even a lot of hip-hop has become super pop, not to say that it’s a bad thing, but it’s good to get back to the roots and what I believe to be hip-hop gold.

Opiuo, Australian native, brings his funk flavor to this track in a way that just brings the tempo up perfectly with out ruining it at all.  You don’t want to add to much salt and ketchup if you know what I mean, but just the right dash of something different still keeps the original mood at it’s finest.  Thank you for this gem dude and taking me back to the good ol’ days!

This is exactly what I needed today, a little old school mixed with some extra sauce.  Mondays are never my favorite, and tomorrow is my birthday so I am trying to get myself pumped and let go of any bullshit that shall now be in the past because it is now a new year for me.

Press play on this one and get your mind right, enjoy!

Electric Guest – Holiday

Having released their first full length Mondo a few months ago, Electric Guest cruises in with another neo-psychedelic pop anthem. Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton, the duo that is Electric Guest, paired with Danger Mouse to produce their sound, and the Mouse‘s touch is magical and shines through in the Motown sound. Holiday explores all those feel good funk moments with falsetto vocals and amorous lyrics about the girl of your dreams.

Top shelf girl is made of gold
Step into it close enough to feel the cold
Where I wait days with no return
The sun one loves to make me feel the burn, the burn…

She’s my holiday, only here for the game
My favorite mistake, living inside the maze

We can make it together and I know
We can make it on our own
Always finds a way to run
Only when the heart begins to sound the drum.”

Twinkling guitars add to the upward spiral of psychedelic soul. A likeness exists in the retro sound to Django Django or the Black Keys, but Taccone’s vocals set Electric Guest apart. Much like the entirety of their album, Holiday reminds us of the shade-wearing, windows-down days of summer and love. It’s a one-way ticket to your carefree, fearless youth.

Danger Mouse – Two Against One (feat. Jack White)

Worth repeating…

Make no mistake I don’t do anything for free
I keep my enemies closer than my mirror ever gets to me
And if you think that there is shelter in this attitude
Wait til you feel the warmth of my gratitude.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, The mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, Lucky for me, I’m not the only one.

And if it looks to me like you in your reflection
Plan to add your own fight to this dimension.
Then tell it that this ain’t no free-for-all to see,
There’s only three
It’s just you and me against me.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, The mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, lucky for me, I’m not the only one.
Lucky for me, I’m not the only one.

And if your foot’s on to sick a thousand “yes men”
Brand or brake into the middle of this little plan…
Then there’s your plan to hear me say,
That I won’t play around the way, anyway
I plan to plan around them.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, the mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, lucky for me, I’m not the only one.
Lucky for me, I’m not the only one…”

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Juin 2011

The second I pressed play on this tape I had to stop dead in my tracks to sit back and take it all in. It’s only Wednesday and this has already been one heck of a week…

That’s why I’m heading for the coast, it’s the only reside I know… – Loud Valley

Of course, dead smack in the middle of it all Steph sends me  a therapy session in the form of a mixtape that puts everything in perspective. The first five songs in this tape were meant to be together, in that order and released on June 15th, 2011. If you’re busy, overwhelmed with work and need something counter the load put this on repeat, it’s guaranteed to make it better. If you’re an LMDM fan you already know each tape stands along and this one is no different.

I myself have a bunch to do before heading to the water this weekend but I had to share this new tape with you before doing anything, enjoy.

The artist I am most excited about this month is Metronomy. Check them out if you haven’t already. They have three albums and have done many many amazing remixes. Another is Connan Mockasin, another UK based artist, but native to New Zealand. I couldn’t contain my excitement and amazement for CM’s video for “Dolphin Love” when my friend Maggie Godwin first showed it to me. Read her post and watch the video here. Connan supported Mystery Jets for a London show last summer and most recently opened for Warpaint on their UK tour.
