Gorgon City – Ready For Your Love Feat. MNEK (Florian Paetzold Remix)

couple-relaxing-on-a-bed

It is not a typical situation and declaring the moment takes as much guts as the act of letting someone in when we’re most vulnerable. No one’s ready to jump on love. At least not me.

I first heard Gorgon City’s original when it came out upon seeing MNEK on the track’s title. I dug it, mostly for its melodies, by owning the starring role in the song they put the  lyrics on a background. These lyrics.

It wasn’t until I pressed play on an early listen of Florian Paetzold’s remix that my jaw dropped just as the 1 minute mark passed. I stopped typing on my keyboard while a mental—and spacious—WTF moment passed by. Naked, reverberated and heavily-pitched-down vocals single-handedly lead this movie. As the lyrics are sung you can feel the meaning of every word. Finger snaps like a metronome and a sonic wind gust prepares you for the drop. Then it’s chopped vocals and harmonies that lead to the bridge. If you think that was all wait for it around the 2:40 mark.

Summarizing what is unique about this remix is quite simple. You see, the norm is that computers, technology and synthesizers squeeze the emotion out of a song. By pitching down the vocals and the other magic stated above, Florian manages to make a song more passionate and moving. And when a remixer is able to accomplish something like this it deserves praise, recognition—and in the words of MNEK, most of all, most of all, sharing it with someone like you.

Clams Casino – I’m God

I want to bring this song back. It sounds like the end of summer. The sound of energy coming back. As if you have to inhale it. Yes, it came out ages ago, but was never featured here and deserves a revisit to accompany the turning seasons, the beginning of fall.

Clams Casino, a hip hop producer from New Jersey has released numerous equally as memorable tracks since this song. Notably working with A$AP  Rocky in the recent months. Sampling Imogen Heap for the vocals, this instrumental track brings back the sweet memory and style of the Garden State soundtrack with a more base. All of which give you that feeling of an amazing end. The comfort in the moment.

That is what fall is as your mind, for the first time, remembers that the sweet sweat of summer is drying and the cool sound of fall is near. I love this song. Clams Casino has woven in delicate percussions that gently lay upon the vocals. Only when you plug in your headphones can you appreciate the deeper bass below this top coat of soft sound. Welcome the change and the season.

Ta-ku – Higher (Flume Remix)

TaKu-FDFD-COVER LAY OUT1

I am not sure quite how to approach writing about this song. It is a layered with amazing artists and allows for the listener to flow through them all fluidly.

Ta-ku created Higher sampling from Starz, a tune produced by J Dilla who contributed countless beats during his lifetime as a prominent producer. Ta-ku has also has released numerous tracks this past year which highlight his style as a base-heavy DJ creating tracks which feel like they knock the wind out of you with every well-placed sample and drum. (Also recommend looking at his mixes The Presets – Fall and/or I Miss You).

The recent edit of the song by Flume adds more of an upbeat edge to the mix. Flume, a 21-year old producer from Sydney, brings up the tempo and plays with the sample to make the perfect song to listen to when you want to give the room a boost. Flume has been featured on this site before and also released my favorite track of the summer one month ago (Disclosure – You & Me Flume Remix) bringing him to the masses.

This song is guaranteed to give you a bounce in your step.

Rihanna – Stay (Marius Hörsturz Edit)

I have one week left here in London. After being here two weeks, it rained for the first time late last night. Not just the typical rain like London does. Lightening storms over the city. This burst of light, a force of energy really, just got me back to thinking and working and playing in the real world. Sometimes when I take  a break from life, I need a reminder that the world is turning, its making fresh energy.  So when you run out or away, it is still churning out new sources of life. Pouring through the streets of London or LA or wherever you find yourself.

I feel that about this song. The original Rihanna release was overplayed nearly immediately upon release, but this new edit from Marius Hörsturz has given this song a revitalized energy. Hörsturz, adds in a deeper house sound and heavy vocals laying this on the memorable piano tune from the original track and adding in his personal style of chill house, as he notes it. You can feel this new energy which has been infused into this song bringing it from a solemn plea for more time to a throbbing, airy tune penetrating your ear drums for more. Taking a break-up song to a dance tune.  Marius Hörsturz is someone you should definitely take the time to explore more of. With some of his other recent edits, like Asta – My Heart Is On Fire and  The XX – StarsHörsturz delivers deep house edits filed with the vigor needed to bring you back from wherever. If you wish.

American Royalty – Mariah (Kaytranada Edition)

I am currently working out of London. With this has come countless pubs, many an order of fish and chips, and the inevitable lost journeys through the back alleys and cobblestone streets which make up East London. What has tied all of this together is a walking mix which compliments the crux of  Shoreditch area  and the impetus of people and moving pieces of the city.

This recent addition to said mix does just that. At this point, we are all becoming pretty friendly with Canadian-based, Haitian born Kaytranada. In the past few months he has set the bar for remixing and creating tunes which take already great songs and creating quintessential compilations giving each a new life in his mastered métier.  This recent release is one that is for the books though. The original sample from American Royalty lends dark, fluid vocals which bring to mind this past year’s breakthrough male lead Alex Clare. But this NYC band also adds another element of haunting lyrics and a tone which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. What Kaytranada did with this was make it a tune that hits your core and also makes you want to move with the heavy base and resonance giving it a consistent hitting sound.

Taking advantage of this, I am excited to see Kaytranada here in London tonight and watch him deliver his songs that are perfect for between the sheets or crossing streets.  It’s good a good day for great tunes in London town.

Missy Elliot – Gossip Folk (Miles Felix Funk Remix)

Feeling this tune. Gimme that funky disco sound any day and I instantly get in the groove of the weekend. Strangely, I asked someone where Missy Elliot was the other day and serendipitously found this link coming fresh from producer Miles Felix, makes sounds from Brooklyn. The original Gossip Folk is such a great anthem with Missy doing what she does best with her raspy delivery and Ludacris making a much appreciate cameo. This is a perfect harmony of hip-hop and funk.

I appreciate when you put on a song and it gets into your head with its lyrics and sound, but this is not one of those songs. This is song that gets in to your body and makes you move when you listen to it. Freeing you from heavy thoughts and heavy shoulders. This is a tune exuding hip-hop and brought to life with disco flavor and a saxophone. The dance floor at your next house party will thank me.

The Persuaders – Trying Girls Out

I’m not a one girls guy, and they know it.
When it comes to love I don’t lie,
and the girls respect me for it.
Ain’t gonna say my nose can’t be over
but right now there’s just too many fine ladies out there to choose one from…”

The Velvet Underground – I’m Waiting For The Man

When this album was released in 1967 it was largely ignored. Fools. Since then it has been recognized as one of the most influential and critically lauded rock albums in history. It was recorded in 1966 during  Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, which I wont even try to describe. Don’t know if it was the drugs, the nihilism, the times or what but the feeling you get from this music truly something else.

Hey white boy, what you doin’ uptown?
Hey white boy, you chasin’ our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it’s the furthest from my mind
I’m just lookin’ for a dear, dear friend of mine
I’m waiting for my man…”

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – A Teenager In Love

Am I the only one that finds this song a little strage? I mean it’s pretty clear the song is about the sad story of a teenager so deeply involved with drugs that he has no friends, is willing to try anything and ends up overdosing.  The instrumentation and vocal performance however, have that hopeful shoegaze/dream pop feel so instead of a sad song about drugs I feel like I’m listening the The Rembrandts’ I’ll Be There For You, aka the Friends theme song, weird.

Despite the contrasting feel and production sound, A Teenager In Love is one of my favorite tracks from their self-titled debut LP. Does this track remind you of anything? Bowie - Modern Love maybe? Maybe a little bit. Either way, great song.

Never gonna fall for – Modern love…”

The Black Ghost – It’s Your Touch

This Smooth Jazz 101 inspired track is nothinig short of amazing. The chord progression is as cheesy as it gets but somehow still manages to have the feeling of something you would want to hear at a cool after hours joint. This track is completely out of place in their album, which makes it that much better. I have no idea how they pulled this one off. Laid back, enjoy.
