EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2A by Ryan Radler

Last week we experienced some major player hating from The Man that eventually led to a subpar release of anti-winter 3A. If you haven’t heard or downloaded that one yet check out last weeks post here and spread the word, the kid Ryan Radler is bringing nothing but heat and something that good should not be left unknown. We’ve had many set backs with The Industry & it’s minions in our day but every time we come back swinging even harder and this time it’s no different. We’re 4 weeks and running with exclusive releases of the absolute best summer mixtape series on the web and we couldn’t be more excited about it. When we’re done with the anti-winter series I’m going to do a post featuring all of them so you guys can see just what this guy is doing here. From the custom artwork to the limitless sounds, these tapes are bleeding style and we can’t take ’em for granted…

I ended up spending the entire winter of 2011 developing all my mixes. Cold, blustery weekends you could find me snug in my loft researching and archiving the songs that I would then throw into Logic Pro for the fine-tuning mix sessions. In a cathartic twist, projecting myself into the Summer through the mixes actually made me forget the void left after the January heat wave in LA. I have channeled my “yearning for Summer” through these mixes and now, after many months, we have finally arrived!

We like to use music around these parts for all sorts of healing so that philosophy is right up our alley. Is it just me or does that blonde have really nice hair? Alright, I’m gonna go get all my work done to this fantastic soundtrack, you should do the same. Enjoy.

Metronomy – The Bay (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework)

Erol Alkan is slowly becoming one of my favorite remixers/people in the music business. You may remember when we posted his wonderful remix of MGMT’s Congratulations but if you don’t get familiar because he’s one to look out for and know about. The London based DJ has been tearing up the electronic music scene for more than a decade and is the guy who founded the legendary Trash nightclub back in ’97. The club closed it’s doors in ’07 but if you never got to go it was one of the few places back in that time that kept underground electronic and alternative music in rotation. To put it in perspective, many of the acts that led the way for what is now well known indie electronic and alternative – Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Electric Six – went through Trash when they were just up and coming.

I love people who take it upon themselves to give new art a chance, it’s inspiring and the second I can open up my own place I’ll be doing the exact same thing. Speaking of which, we’ve just about locked in the location for the next Noctambule party and it’s absolutely mind blowing. Like Diamonds will be performing and I’m talking to Steph today about the second act, we’re just about ready to announce it so stay tuned.

His latest work is a remix of Metromony’s The Bay and there’s only one way to describe it:

It feel sooo good…”

As usual, Erol provides and epic arrangement and production made for boats, dance floors, pool sides, harbors, bays and beaches. In the age of microwave music, quick hits and on-demand it takes some serious skill to produce an 8 minute long song that keeps your audiences attention. That said, he does take his time introducing the songs elements so chill out and take your time listening – welcome to the space age, that’s how it’s done around these parts. Summer is just about here and I can’t wait to make it up to Nantucket and the favorite summer hideaways but today I have to wrap up a playlist for a restaurant in Midtown but press play on this gem and get your friday started right, enjoy.

It feel sooo good…”

MGMT – Congratulations (Erol Alkan Rework)

First and foremost, before I say anything, prior to any action, let me anticipate this post by saying that this remix is pretty damn good. I was a big fan of Congratulations before but s mostly because of the bitter sweet lyrics about the complex nature of success…

But damn my luck and damn these friends
That keep on combing back their smiles
I save my grace with half-assed guilt
And lay down the quilt upon the lawn
Spread my arms and soak up congratulations.”

There’s so much irony in these lyrics that the upbeat and feel good nature of Erol’s remix almost seems more appropriate than the original. Don’t get me wrong, the MGMT version is extremely good in it’s own right but Erel absolutely owns this song. A lot of people say they only like the instrumental part of music and lyrics aren’t important to them while others are all about the lyrics. I live and die by both and when the music and lyrics come together like they do on this remix it’s absolute bliss for me. We’re having a Halloween party this Friday and I’ll def be playing this in the early hours, if you haven’t RSVP’d check out this post for information. Alright, a million things to do today as usual but press play and put this one on repeat, enjoy.
