Divine Fits – My Love Is Real

So my father is hip. He’s thrown around the term “with it” a couple of times and I’ve caught him reading Gawker and Jezebel while a used and abused Wall Street Journal sits wrinkled in front of him at his desk. He’s not one of those other dads, he’s a cool dad (Mean Girls reference anyone? eh eh?). I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve been introduced to many a new artist from him over the past couple of years. I remember one morning waking up while being home for the holidays and hearing Animal Collective playing from the family room. Confused, I went to find the source and there was my father sitting in his reading chair with the paper listening to a band I associated with my Mary Jane lovin’roommate at the time. He then informed me that not only had he just purchased the new Animal Collective album, but he had also downloaded The xx’s freshman album and Fever Ray’s. I hadn’t even downloaded these artists yet. I was dumbfounded and embarrassed for myself. Needless to say my dad earned some points in my book that day. Since then we’ve been exchanging music and emerging artists are often a source of conversation between us. Today I’d like to introduce you to a band my dad suggested I listen to this past week, the Divine Fits.

A side project while their respective bands are spending time away from the studio, Divine Fits is Britt Daniel of Spoon and Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade and Sam Brown. Formed earlier this year, the Fits are already many critics artists to watch. Their sound is reminiscent of the member’s previous bands: guitars and low-fi synths come together to make an urgent plunge into the alternate minimalist rock world. Boeckner’s odd blend of falsetto and spoken song on the album’s introductory track is blunt and a little off-putting considering he’s crooning “My love is real until it stops.” This bluntness, however, mimics the band’s acoustics. A simple kick-drum and synth bass rhythm carries us flatline through the song while light keyboard sounds give the track its playfulness. I found myself saying “yes, yes, yes” after this track cut off and immediately went into the second. Nothing the Fits do is overdone, showy, or unnecessary.

It’s all very tongue and cheek with the Divine Fits. In all honesty, this track and the rest of the album, A Thing Called Divine Fits, is one of the best things I’ve heard all year. As much as I love the member’s previous bands, I’m crossing my fingers that this project keeps its momentum. Their sonic formula is right on target; tightly packaged and promptly delivered. Here’s to hoping they don’t end as abruptly as this track does.

Fever Ray – When I Grow Up (D.Lissvik of Studio Remix)

First of all, I always thought this was a great song but this remix takes it to another level. The original is dark, eerie and introspective, this remix converts it into a sun-drenched, playful and inspiring piece with a tone that’s more inspiring than sad.

When I grow up
I want to live near the sea
Crab claws and bottles of rum
That’s what I’ll have
Staring at the seashell
Waiting for it to embrace me…”

I’m not exactly sure what this song is about simply because there are so many feelings, passions and understandings expressed in it that it’s a bit overwhelming. The point of view is clearly that of an adults but the childlike innocence and need for affection portrayed make it sound like it’s a child trapped inside of an adult waiting for something or someone to help it exist.

I put my soul in what i do
Last night i drew a funny man
With dark eyes and a hanging tongue
It goes way bad
I never liked a sad look
From someone who wants to be loved by you…”

If I didn’t have a meeting to go to I would try to tackle these lyrics but we’re in the middle of some big developments so I have to run. Either way, for those of you stuck in the office I highly recommend taking a trip back to your childhood and zoning out to this song for the next 4 minutes, it’s a good feeling. Enjoy.

I put my soul in what I do…

The Twelfth Hour

The Twelves

Will someone please explain to me the phenomenon that is time while at work? Doesn’t it feel like right before you get to work time is flying and you can’t move fast enough but the second you sit down it’s like you go into some alternate world and it takes an hour for 5 minutes to pass. Work sucks huh? You know what, I really like the concept of that new Bruce Willis movie. We should have robots that represent us at work while we do important things like thinking of more ways to use robots and not do anything. That probably won’t happen today so I’ve got a little something to help you day dream and procrastinate more than you already do…

The Twelves released a new 60 minute mixtape two days ago and I think my friend Ben’s facebook message describes it best: “new 12s mixtape = predictable amazingness.”  This is the followup to their previous mixtape Episode II, which I never got around to posting but will in the next week or so.  I’ve been listening to this all morning and it rocks, there’s really nothing else to say.  These guys just get it when it comes to song selection and production. The transitions from song to song are seamless, the mash-ups and remixes are top notch and the overall flow and feel is energetic and entertaining all throughout.  it’s quite good.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Septembre

It’s the first of the month, so cash your checks and get up.” – Bone Thugs

Aside from the usual check cashing  and up getting, the first of the month is always exciting for us because it means a new version of Steph Lund’s Le Miel du Mois premiere’s on E.M.P.T. Since it’s inception back in May Le Miel du Mois has been downloaded over 800 times, and that’s not counting the nearly month long shut down we had to overcome. This popular mixtape displays a broad yet refined taste in countless genres, styles and feelings – quite fresh. This is one that needs to be listen to the whole way though as all the songs come together to paint a coherent experience. So without further ado, here are some words from the mastermind herself, enjoy.

Septembre. septembre. les feuilles. le vent. The beautiful feeling of fall across your neck, buzzing through your hair, down to your legs making you run faster and faster until you fall oh into fall into fall into fall. This mix is a little bit softer than the summer mixes. The second to last track is Fever Ray. I was first introduced to Fever Ray a few months ago, when I received it in the mail from The Album Club. If you haven’t heard about the UK’s TAC yet, I suggest you check it out here: http://www.thealbumclub.com/concept.php. Fever Ray is the debut solo album from The Knife’s frontwoman, Karin Dreijer Andersson. I love Karin’s voice, ever since I fell in love with Röyksopp’s “What Else Is There” released in ’05. She is eccentric and eclectic and sometimes her vocals and lyrics scare me, but nevertheless keep me wanting more:

Fever Ray’s If I Had A Heart lyrics:

This will never end
cause i want more
more, give me more, give me more”
