Blur – Girls & Boys

Damon Albarn does not get enough credit.

I’m biased, it’s true. There aren’t many people who would gladly listen to the full “Monkey’s Journey To The West” soundtrack straight through. I have been a Gorillaz obsessive since the first album dropped, and have purchased everything Albarn has been a part of before or since: The Good, the Bad and the Queen, Rocket Juice & The Moon, the African ensemble projects, the operas, the various feature spots, the production gigs (most notably for Amadou & Mariam and Bobby Womack.)

Just look at that list. Even if you have never heard of an artist, that amount and stylistic variety of output in a short time is impressive. And don’t forget, Gorillaz is basically his personal concept project for which he has written all of the music. And, the list doesn’t even include his most famous musical outing. Yet Albarn is not a mainstream name (at least not in the USA).

When Blur was announced as a Coachella headliner for the festival’s 2013 installment, the Internet was up in arms. “Who?” was the general refrain. “Oh, that woo-hoo song band?” came next.

I get that. Albarn’s first band’s first single came out before I was born, and the band broke up in 2001. “Song 2” has become a generic sports arena staple, stripped of its attitude and novelty. But as anyone who saw the Coachella show or any of the reunion shows knows that Blur remains a force to be reckoned with. They are, without a doubt, one of the top rock bands of the past 20 years, in terms of quality and influence.

And in the ultimate victory, they have outlasted their bitter rivals, Oasis.

So if you don’t know Blur, here’s one of my favorite tracks to get you started. Time to play catch up.

DJ Y alias JY – Sunny, Happy (Easy – part 2)

1

This song makes me feel giddy with sunshine. It’s the sort of blissful intoxication that results after you’ve had too much sun and can’t help but exude a hazy radiance as you drift through your day. Navigating through the swarming mass of sweat and noise of this city is way better when listening to this catchy mash-up. There’s a pep in my step, a glide in my stride, and I can’t help but smile at strangers. This spontaneous overflow of joy usually comes as a surprise to my fellow New Yorkers, and it’s fun to see whether they return the spark. Though many seem baffled by my bliss, there is nothing as rewarding as the occasional glimmer of acknowledgment or fleeting smile in return.

Sunny, Happy [Easy – part 2], by DJ Y alias JY, is the perfect summer mash-up. Cro and Gorillaz compliment Bobby Hebb’s 1966 classic perfectly. “Easy” X “Clint Eastwood” X “Sunny = a beam of sunshine, the ideal mash-up for melting your day away. If you dig this, I recommend checking out Bobby Hebb’s performance of “Sunny” from 1972. His smile is infectious.

Gorillaz – Melancholy Hill (Feed Me Remix)

For those who recently started following Feed Me this chilled out remix might seem a bit off. His latest dubstep and electro jams are full of emotion, technique and enough bass to make the pavement crack. Either way, great track from one of my favorite producers, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars

Thanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world but your here with me! I appreciate that.”

It’s the first of the month and 2010 is looking better and better by the moment. February was a great month for EMPT, our following has never been stronger and our new company is only a few weeks away from launch (stay tuned). Maintaing EMPT is hard work and you barely get to take a break, that is until Steph sends me her latest masterpiece and I get to sit back and get it ready for release. After an entire month of work it’s sort of like dessert after a big meal, though when you’re dealing with Steph is more like dessert before dinner. Either way, this tape is yet another completely different and unique experience, LMDM will never get old, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Mars:
March. Today marks 17 days until forthebeat is at sxsw and 20 days until the first day of spring, both can’t come soon enough. This mix aims to get you through the last few weeks of winter with your dancing shoes laced up tight to dance through the night (yes this was meant to rhyme). One of my favorite new artists is Coma Cinema, if you havent listened to the album yet, better get on it fast. Making Pitchfork’s forkcast last month, this band is about to be everywhere – “Flower Pills” debuted on LMDM last month, and this month brings you “Cop Caller.” The entire album Baby Prayers can be downloaded for free at www.comacinema.org – get. it. now.
