Holy Ghost! – Some Children (Feat. Michael McDonald)

It feels good to be back in New York but man was this last trip to DR much needed. Hanging out with people down there really shows you how much New Yorkers stress and worry, about everything! Could it be that NYC’s celebrated hustle mentality is just a mask for peoples insecurities and anxieties? Does the city not sleep because it’s up all night worried about the next day? That’s not an easy question but in my quest for balance I can’t help but question the value of this mentality, I don’t even think it makes you more productive if that is in fact the goal.

People say things aren’t black and white I have a suspicion that they are and our very own human nature is the gray area. It’s all mathematics, cause & effect, 1+1. If you slack off, you have to catch up and if you’re catching up then you’re falling behind and all those things lead to to problems. It seems to me the gray area is our elaborate excuse justification system and they key to simplifying things is being disciplined enough to take care of responsibilities. Anyways, get things done but do it without the heart attack. If you have responsibilities that you ignore then you know the consequences, there are no surprises.

You don’t hear when I’m talking, you don’t hear what I’m saying…”

So what does this have to do with Some Children?, absolutely nothing. I love DJing this jam and it’s just one of those tracks I like to put on in the background to chill out with to gain perspective. That said, I’m gonna go cool and get all my shit done today to keep the universe in order, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2A by Ryan Radler

Last week we experienced some major player hating from The Man that eventually led to a subpar release of anti-winter 3A. If you haven’t heard or downloaded that one yet check out last weeks post here and spread the word, the kid Ryan Radler is bringing nothing but heat and something that good should not be left unknown. We’ve had many set backs with The Industry & it’s minions in our day but every time we come back swinging even harder and this time it’s no different. We’re 4 weeks and running with exclusive releases of the absolute best summer mixtape series on the web and we couldn’t be more excited about it. When we’re done with the anti-winter series I’m going to do a post featuring all of them so you guys can see just what this guy is doing here. From the custom artwork to the limitless sounds, these tapes are bleeding style and we can’t take ’em for granted…

I ended up spending the entire winter of 2011 developing all my mixes. Cold, blustery weekends you could find me snug in my loft researching and archiving the songs that I would then throw into Logic Pro for the fine-tuning mix sessions. In a cathartic twist, projecting myself into the Summer through the mixes actually made me forget the void left after the January heat wave in LA. I have channeled my “yearning for Summer” through these mixes and now, after many months, we have finally arrived!

We like to use music around these parts for all sorts of healing so that philosophy is right up our alley. Is it just me or does that blonde have really nice hair? Alright, I’m gonna go get all my work done to this fantastic soundtrack, you should do the same. Enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mai 2011

Where am I? I’ve been rockin’ for a good 27 hours now,  was in the studio with the Oos & Ahhs all day yesterday, pulled an all nighter to finish curating the music for a restaurant and then realized this morning I have to hook you up with this months mixtape – Go, go, go…

Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time…” – The Eagles

This months installment of LMDM is arriving 17 days late but in my opinion perfectly on time. I’ve been meaning to post about 9 of the 14 songs on the list which goes to show you how similar Steph and I are when it comes to music. There is much to be said about this line up, but I want to avoid too much talking because and let Mai 2011 shine. I’m pumped to finally have the new LMDM and I know a lot of you have been waiting so here it is, enjoy.

I decided to open this mix with Naked and Famous’ :48 intro called The Source which then goes into The Sun, my favorite track off the new album, besides Young Blood, and ended this month’s mix with one of my favorite Paris DJ’s Walter Sobcek, and his new remix of Parisian artist, Keren Ann, called My Name Is Trouble- the opener and closer of this month’s mix sets somewhat of a tone, which depending on the individual could feel completely different from one person to the next.

Holy Ghost! – Wait & See (Flight Facilities Remix)

DFA recently released the new Holy Ghost! song and it was met with mixed reviews. Flight Facility recently released a remix of the song that I think we’ll all agree gives the track the vibe we were all looking for the first time around. Check out the original post for some more info, enjoy.

Holy Ghost! – Wait & See

Holy Ghost! sent me their new song and I wasn’t sure if I was listening to a remix of Chaka Khans Ain’t Nobody or a new track from the upcoming album. DFA as a label is known for bringing it back and the artists never shy away from their influences. Wait & See has hints of that classic 80’s fast life feel,

The song addresses an issue a lot of people have with their love interests. His girl promises she’ll always be upfront with him but he’s not sure if he can believe her. In this situation you have two choices, you can torture yourself with endless thoughts of betrayal, translate that to your relationship and drive your partner crazy –

Now the problems with me are in you?

In my book this approach only makes things worse and as the lyric says all you do is bring that energy to your partner. Overwhelming someone with insecurity in the name of love is not exactly how you show love so sometimes you need to give a little trust do what Holy Ghost! says – Wait & See. So far the Brooklyn kids have released nothing but heat so expect this self-titled album to due April 5th to be a good one, enjoy.

Monarchy – Love Get Out Of My Way (Holy Ghost [Feat.Dixon] Remix)

I like the song, love the style…

“So many artists shove themselves down people’s throats. We didn’t really intend it to be a statement in itself, we just didn’t want to expose the minute details of our personalities. We wanted to allow the music to breath in itself. But it does become a comment on the cult of personality. That will be one of our biggest challenges, especially now, in this age of information overload. But actually, we think people are bored with the accessibility of so many artists. We’re treating our listeners with intelligence, and they’re responding well.”

Mark Ronson – Somebody To Love Me (Holy Ghost Remix)

This is the next single from Record Collection. Seriously though, Mark Ronson, Boy George,
Miike Snow
and Holy Ghost? Come on man! Boy George’s vocal performance take this track to another planet. Marc Ronson smashed the original and Holy Ghost is going to bring it to dance floor. I don’t know about you but I crave lyrics that get my mind going like an addict and this song has no shortage of those…

We are wicked men,
Looking for our buckles to loosen,
By the count of ten,
I wanna see somebody human,
And I lost what it was, in the teenage dust of a downtown Romeo,
In a couple of weeks, you can tell all the freaks, how you carried my body home

But tonight, I crossed the line,
Dear Mr Lonely, how much do they know me?
I could find lessons in life,
But, once you’ve earned it, you’ve already burned it

Alright I’m outta here, I’m going to start putting things out a lot faster so there’s more music and one main post a day. Too good, enjoy.

Catch up ni&$@s!
Damn you fading ’em HOV, how you gave ’em that? – Jay-Z (Show You How)

Holy Ghost! – Static On The Wire (RAC Remix)

I hear your voice in fragments darling…”

I think this pretty much settles it, André Allen Anjos’s the Portuguese producer also known RAC (Remix Artist Collective) is officially my favorite remixer of 2010. I was reading about famous producer Mutt Lange who despite his extremely successful career might not exactly ring bells for you. Mr. Lange was a producer who was all about taking his ego out the work and bringing the best out of the artist. Would you believe me if I told you the same guy that produced the Backstreet Boys was also responsible for AC/DC? How about Def Leppard, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams and Billy Ocean – believe it or not they were all produced by Mutt Lange. That type of versatility is amazing in my eyes so when I see RAC remixing so many different artist and styles I can’t help but think of what this guy is going to be like in the future.

As I was thinking about this I went and did some research of Anjos only to find that he shared my exact thoughts on the subject. This remix is amazing, enjoy…

One of the main reasons I started RAC was out of frustration with the current remix scene. I was just plain bored with the lack of variety at the time. Things have definitely come along just in the past year or so with more and more bands remixing each others songs. I strive to create remixes for music lovers who want to hear the song re-invented, not just re-interpreted and chopped up. I hope people experience the original songs in a different way that not only complements the original, but takes them somewhere else.

The idea behind RAC Vol 1 was simply to celebrate that idea by compiling songs that we felt should flow together, and just like most DJs create an in-depth organic mixtape of sorts without the need to stick to particular genre. I love all of the bands included and it’s probably the only “mix” on which you’d hear both Robbers On High Street and Chromeo. One of the main criteria when choosing the bands was the variety intended, but above all, the quality of the original songs. Many artists have remix albums that are simply collections of past work, but this one was built up from the start for this purpose.”

I don’t know if it’s just me, but NYC feels very calm now or at least as mellow as a city with 8 million people can feel. I remember back in the 90’s pre Giuliani what a circus this city use to be. I mean the energy you felt walking in certain places was incredible, now that might have been because you could get robbed, attacked or tested at any particular moment but it was there nevertheless. The city is a safe place now and that’s a good thing, but it’s strange how you can still crave that old New York feeling. For all those who remember the Knicks rap song…

Go New York, Go New York, Go!”

Anyways, today is the calm before the storm so I needed something laid back to rock to and the Classixx remix of I Will Come Back is right in tune. I’d love to stay and chat but there’s much preparation to do so press play and drift away.

Le Miel du Mois: Julliet

Apparently it’s July, welcome. A lot happened for us in June, we had the most traffic EMPT had ever seen and got shut down in the same month. Our diabolical hosting company Gisol Inc. stole our website and content so we’ve had to rebuild from scratch – no easy task. But atlas there is light at the end of the tunnel and what could be more suitable to celebrate our return then announcing the July version of Steph Lund’s beloved Le Miel du Mois! With that said, here is an excerpt from Steph hinting at the masterminding that helps create this tape:

Le Miel du Mois: Juillet: With the constant rain in June and thinking about the intense heat on its way, this mix reflects the restlessness of summer.
Spotlight Track: The last track is from Paris based artist Three Leaves and a Head – a remix of Radiohead’s Reckoner, off the In Rainbows album. I first heard of Three Leaves and a Head from We All Want Someone To Shout For.
Remixes of Radiohead are a bit touchy for me, because I don’t see how most tracks can improve, however, these subtle enhances Three Leaves and a Head accomplished are really beautiful and a perfect way to end this mix. Check out Three Leaves and a Head’s Myspace page which also includes a remix of Nude.
