EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Novembre 2013

I just watched Seeking a Friend for the End of the World while working on the November edition of LMDM and it really made me think about how we live our lives like we’re not going to die one day. If your days were numbered, which they actually are, would you have the same fears, what would you cherish and value, would you lose your inhibitions, your safety nets, would your culture matter, would you try all the things you keep thinking about, what would you do? It’s fascinating how the idea of living free sounds so radical but that’s what the social engineering does, it makes you stop when you should go. It makes people who speak out against the programming sound like they’ve lost their minds, are immature and don’t have a grasp on reality…

In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – Orwell

It makes fear comforting and fearlessness rebellion when it’s actually human nature. My life is challenging right now, not for any imaginary matrix created problem but because I’m trying to regain power over my creative nature and lose the programming that I’ve come to realize is trying to guide my actions…

Dear God, I wonder can you save me? Illuminati want my mind soul and my body.” – Jay-Z

Thank the moon and the stars for music man because sometimes art is the only place I can go to find truth. I say sometimes because there’s also a deliberate dumbing down of art and culture for the purpose of blurring the lines between trash and high quality but that’s another subject on its own. But that’s why in the age of excess the true currency is taste, selectiveness and honest sources. That my friends is why LMDM resonates. It’s not a tape that’s trying to accomplish a marketing goal, Steph isn’t trying to convince you of anything, we’re not trying to sell a damn thing…

Now before I finish, let me just say
I did not come here to show out, did not come here to impress you
Because to tell you the truth when I leave here I’m GONE!
And I don’t care what you think about me – but just remember
When it hits the fan brother, whether it’s next year, ten years
Twenty years from now, you’ll never be able to say
That these brothers lied to you JACK!”

At the end of the day EMPT & LMDM isn’t what we do, it’s what we love and I hope that we can continue to offer that distinction with absolutely no compromise. Long time LMDM listeners know the first song always makes a statement and Wolf Alice’s Blush is what got this whole post in motion –

Don’t chicken out it’s all good, you’re allowed to be what you could…”

That ethereal vibe, emotion and beauty is carried out throughout the entirety of Novembre 2013 which twist and turns from acoustic to electronic in the most interesting and futuristic way only Steph can pull off. You can really lock into this duality in the middle with the Romare track which is just incredible. Yet another work of art to add to this amazing collection. I know I’m all over the place today but that’s where my life is right now, I can’t see the limits of my own thinking and I don’t want to, I just want to express it and I don’t want to wait. Steph’s tapes always give me a platform because they’re so full of life and awesomeness, press play & enjoy.

Every LMDM is created from memories and experiences, so it should come across and feel like its an ongoing story… the last song to me always feels like it could be the first..because like all of our world’s – its about that ongoing, ever-changing, up and down, but above all, amazing, path …”

Lollapalooza and then Some

tumblr_mlly9rzRSO1rqgjz2o1_500

A week later and the hangover of Lollapalooza has finally subsided. Not the partying kind, the music kind. You get withdrawals after a weekend like that. To be honest, the rumors are true about it. It is the most organized festival you can go to and it’s clean. You almost welcome the dirt after a long day of trekking back and forth Grant Park. Being that it was my first time to the lovely city of Chicago, I was in complete awe. Not just because I finally got all the references to it being the other half of Gotham City, but also because it is truly a neat place. For the festival, I applaud Live Nation as I was inspired to listen to every artist I heard after each set, as they sounded perfect. Through the ocean of crop tops and man tank tops, there was something beautiful there, the music.

There is a hilarious poster which notes the “American Festival” having that 80’s band you sort of listened to, Mumford and Sons, Kendrick Lamar, that singer / songwriter you can’t remember the name but should try and see, etc. Don’t fret, they were all there. And it was marvelous. So we don’t need to go on about how great the Cure was, it should go without saying that is like the world’s biggest sing-a-long for 2 hours. I would, however, love to make some quick notes about the acts I saw that stood out.

The Neighbourhood – This is the fifth time I have seen them. They had recently released an album showcasing the sultry lead vocals and the bands ability to create some sexy tunes giving equal credit to catchy guitar sounds and a base which keeps you hanging on to their every chord. The lyrics, oh the lyrics, are dark and sexy and beg you to get undressed.

Band of Horses – OK. They are a massive act. And I definitely cried when they played the Funeral. It was absolute magic to hear them live. Truly a beautiful moment at the festival.

Chance the Rapper – A very cool artist ( Favorite Song produced by Nate Fox – amazing track is available with the Childish Gambino) and overall really fun to see live. Great rapping with a smooth sound and an eldritch voice.

Charles Bradley – If you are at all in to James Brown, look this wonderful man up. An entertainer with vocals which had a bandana wrapped mob dancing along in the heat along with him. (Check out This World Is Going Up In Flames). I found a fun mix I think would appeal to the readers here with David Guetta. Enjoy a moment where funk meets electric. Beautiful.

Palma Violets – By far, the best new band I had seen. People were stopping to listen or walking back to the Bud Light stage and just staring at them. Look up where they will be next and buy some tickets with your fun friends. The music is what will likely play in a movie when they film the night everyone remembers forever (Best of Friends is the tune to look up for this moment).

Jake Bugg – I had heard about him a while ago and made it a point to see him. Just amazing. Arguably the singer / songwriter in my poorly executed joke above. He will blow you away. Download the song below and go for a drive. It is that kind of music to make you take the long way to wherever.

On that note, I give you some examples of the talented crew who made this festival the best Lolla ever.

Jake Bugg – Seen It All

Charles Bradley Vs David Guetta – No Time for Love

Chance the Rapper – Favorite Song (ft. Childish Gambino)

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Mars 2013

Chances, people tell you not to take chances
When they tell you there aren’t any answers
And I was starting to agree
But I awoke suddenly in the path of a lightning bolt”

They want us to define ourselves, to pick a side, choose a lane, walk around proud of those beliefs, confident and unwavering – safe & comfortable. But whose beliefs are those anyway? Most of us are products of our upbringing, our beliefs are those of our environment – our parents, television, marketing, music and so on. Why? Well, it’s easy to sell to, control and manipulate a predictable person. Think about your old ass grand parents. You ever hear them say some retarded sexist, racist or generally moronic stone age shit that makes you wonder how people in the past could have been so ignorant? We all have. Back in the day when information wasn’t as freely accessible that’s how effective the old ways were.

But say goodbye to olden times and welcome to EMPT, home of the Space Age. Open to everything and bound by nothing, we represent the futuristic being. Rebels of routine, patterns and blind tradition…

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” – Bruce Lee

An open mind gives us the full capacity to love, appreciate and understand the fact that we are truly limitless. As we move into spring let’s use that to remember that the world is always in movement, change is the only thing that is constant. Thus, there’s no point to lock off your mind, move with the world forever.

I’m so proud that EMPT is the home of Le Miel du Mois and every time I hear Stephs work I get all worked up like this because her music is 100% aligned with everything that inspired my to start this site. I mean listen any LMDM and pretend like you know what’s next. This is no Pandora or Netflix bs algorithm. We have no preference for anything but the best, nothing here is a cheap random song you might like because you liked the last one. This 100% human expression with the single purpose of sharing our lives, taste and journey in the most honest way we can. This isn’t conformity, we answer to no one when brining you what we love. This is the Space Age. Press play, enjoy.
