EMPT Classic: Nancy Sinatra – You Only Live Twice

Vintage EMPT. As you can see we haven’t changed much, we’re still those divergent kids who can’t be placed, still pushing the limits, testing things, exploring, traveling and challenging ourselves, unlearning and growing.

James Bond had a big impact on me for so many reasons. The vintage Bond films are aesthetically wonderful in how they capture culture, society and the world at large. The character was a man that didn’t hide behind cultural facades, everyone knows how he is and everyone accepts it. You see all these billionaires and successful men constantly getting caught doing what they’ve always done and it’s a big deal because they lied in the first place. Anyways, here’s a post from back in the day – New York City December 28, 2011

______

You only live twice or so it seems, one life for yourself and one for your dreams…”

Everybody is always talking about what they’re going to do, what they want to become. Every year we have resolutions, new plans and countless ambitions. We have these grand fantasies about the things we’d like to do sexually, we dream adventurous but take a moment to think about how many of these thoughts and ideas come actually come to fruition. What happens to those inspiring thoughts? For many of us they come and go, usually written off as something you would never dare do or whatever other lame excuse we can come up with. Then we wake up from our dream life, come back to “reality,” go to work, settle for the easily accessible, go home to our girlfriends/boyfriends and hold back on those fantasies and live out that second life…

You drift through the years and life seems tame…”

How often do we take advantage of the limitless nature of the universe? Sadly nowhere near enough. I could write a few books on this but what I’m trying to say is life the dream, I’m not talking about any standardized 1980’s bs rockstar interpretation of what the dream is supposed to be. I’m not talking about the ever ambiguous American Dream, I’m saying live your dream and do it now.

You could spend an entire lifetime waiting for that dream life to come true, waiting for the so called right person to live out your fantasies with, etc. Good things don’t come to those who wait, that’s a load of crap. Good things come to those who wait while diligently working for the things they want. So don’t sit around, actively pursue the things you want and love, forget the consequences – “And love is a stranger who’ll beckon you on, don’t think of the danger or the stranger is gone.”

We all live two lives but we don’t have to, make your life simpler and consolidate those thoughts baby. Reality is malleable, just look at all the marvelous technology around you as an example, someone thought of a wallet sized computer/phone before it became real. The same applies…

This dream is for you, so pay the price
Make one dream come true, you only live twice…”

ZZ Ward – Cinnamon Stix (feat. Nathan Santos)

It’s a scorcher out there today. I can see the heat rising off the roofs from my little air-conditioned East-Village apartment. While the temperature inside is cooling down, this song is turning up the heat as it blasts through my speakers. ZZ Ward brings us a song that’s dripping in sex and cool. If the new Bond flick wasn’t in post-production already, I’d be begging the producers to use this track for their forever hedonistic opening credits. It balances on the threshold between class and dingy, raunchy and suave. Ward‘s husky drawl goes down like a bottle of smooth, ice cold beer. This track is hands-down sexy.

Knock that sun down from this amber sky
Shake the stars ’cause I’m gonna change your mind.”

The duet with Nathan Santos emphasizes the sexual tension of this song. Ward is maneater and Santos is her prey for the night. Turn this track up as evening sets in and the temperature outside hopefully goes down. It’s an acoustic lap dance that strips you of your inhibitions. This isn’t some laid-back relaxing night music. This is a dirty brash seduction song with a little bit of sleaze and a lot of flirtation.

I’ll take a shot of Ward‘s confidence any day and any night. She’s a woman on a mission and sonically we’re her target. I want to be at whatever dive bar Ward is at tonight.

Nancy Sinatra – You Only Live Twice

If you haven’t noticed by now, I am somewhat of a James Bond aficionado. I can’t think of another product that has managed to stay relevant across multiple generations like the 007 franchise, all while never compromising the elegance and integrity of the brand. Top notch.

Regarded in numerous circles as the best Bond theme of all time Nancy Sinatras’You Only Live Twice is truly something special. It is the most sampled/recreated Bond theme to date, you’ve heard the famous violin intro sequence in countless songs, most notably Robbie Williams’ Millennium, and the Bjork and Coldplay covers. In the original Ian Flemming novel the haiku which inspired the songs opening lyrics was

You only live twice: Once when you’re born & once when you look death in the face.

Not exactly the type of concept people like to hear. This was later transformed into the more romantic and manageable:

You only live twice, or so it seems.. One life for yourself & one for your dreams.”

P.S. for those of you who share my affection with the Marrakesh express trend check out Octopussy. It is set in India and features some very inspiring fashion and imagery.

Carly Simon – Nobody Does it Better (The Spy Who Loved Me)

So I’ve been on a James Bond binge lately and let me just say, the exotic locations, the not only beautiful but unique women, the cars, the luxury, the class, I mean it’s no wonder why it’s one of the longest running and most successful film franchises to date.

Anyways, while watching The Spy Who Loved Me last night I thought that given how my romantic exploits these day would most closely resemble those of a  007, what could be more suiting than posting a Bond theme for Valentines Day. With that said here’s Nobody Does it Better, the theme from The Spy Who Loved Me, a very classy song of admiration, submission and appreciation. I’d imagine if you were in love this would be howboth parties would feel. Timeless song.

I wasn’t looking, but somehow you found me.
I tried to hide from your love light,
But like heaven above me, the spy who loved me,
Is keeping all my secrets safe tonight…
Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you, baby your the best.”
