Donkeyboy – Kaleidoscope

I have quite a few memories from my childhood of looking through a kaleidoscope and being amazed at all the colorful explosions. It was amazing that a little plastic toy could be so inspiring. People always describe using psychedelics as a similarly colorful experience, but that wasn’t the case for me – I was stressed out for 2 hours while my friends made me watch live footage of the Talking Heads (seeing David Byrne in his giant suit is the exact opposite of a warm, comforting experience) and woke up the next day feeling horrifically tired.

Later in my life I realized that the high I was chasing was more likely to come from unaffected experiences, like listening to a song that genuinely inspires me. I get that feeling from Donkeyboy’s new single “Kaleidoscope”. It’s a glistening slice of synth pop that sends chills through my body and makes me feel like I’m having an ultra-positive, life changing experience every time I press play. There’s hints of the best parts of FUN. and even a little Daft Punk, all with a classic Scandinavian ear for infectious melodies. “Kaleidoscope” is a drug whose high I won’t be coming down from anytime soon.

BADBADNOTGOOD – Kaleidoscope (Kaytranada’s Flip)

BBNG2

Badbadnotgood just keeps getting better and better. Notorious for their boundary-pushing and genre-fucking ways, these guys are are absolutely killing it these days. Not your typical jazz conservatory grads, this Toronto-based trio (Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alexander Sowinski on drums) initially garnered attention with their bad-ass jazz interpretative stylings of some popular hip-hop tracks and they’ve gone on to collaborate with artists such as Ghostface Killah, Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean just to name a few. They released their third album III earlier this year– their studio work is pretty damn spectacular, but let it be known that their live set is where the real alchemical shit goes down (improvisation, yo)…

BBNG’s sound is impossible to define (duh) but my best attempt right here right now is something along the lines of ‘jazz-informed harmonic bliss infused with experimental hip-hop-y beats with a dash of post-bop electronica and some punk-ass virtuosic fusion vibes’. In other words, there are no words. Only listening to be done.

On that note, BBNG + Kaytranada = magic. Not a remix, but a flip. Pretty aptly named in my opinion.

Tegan and Sarah – Walking With a Ghost

From Wu-Tang Killer Bee’s to indie rocks favorite (only?) identical lesbian twin sisters Tegan & Sara. Just go with it, I think abstract but it makes sense, I promise.

I have a bunch of new music to release but as I was writing another post Walking With A Ghost came on thanks to my iTunes shuffle and I was taken back to one of my life’s favorite years – 2004. I was a senior in college at the time and so relating to any relationship songs was not exactly happening but this song made sense.

I was walking with a ghost, I said please, please don’t insist.
No matter which way you go. No matter which way you stay.
Your out of my mind, out of my mind…”

The songs lyrics are repetitive, simple yet extremely meaningful. While telling someone that being with them was like being with a ghost is a bit harsh, we’ve all been in those relationships that just don’t work but drag on and on, things aren’t exactly bad nor are they really any good. At that point you do kinda feel like your with a ghost or even stranger, you are a ghost yourself. That might not make any sense at all to some but atleast Tegan and Sara know what I’m talking about, ; ). Enjoy.

Oh yeah and here’s a new and amazing Tiësto & TS collaboration called feel it in my bones. It’s either going to be on Tiëstos upcoming Kaleidoscope or T&S’s Sainthood, either way it’s pretty damn good, enjoy.
