Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (Louis La Roche Remix)

The 1985 original version of this song is quite popular and anyone that has heard it remembers the emotion that it carries which made it a chart-topper back then. 22 years later Placebo covers the original on their album Sleeping With Ghosts but this time they take it down a notch with their downtempo rendition. The irony of this is that the original song’s first title was A Deal With God and after listening to the Placebo cover a journalist said that it sounded more like A Pact With The Devil because of its characteristics. Suffice to say that the Placebo cover has been featured in more TV shows that I can list here and covered over and over again.

Fast forward almost 10 years after the Placebo version and less than a month ago when a certain french producer released his remix. Up until then this song was all about the lyrics and its meaning. Starting with those echoed synth chords you know that you’re in for a treat. Louis La Roche’s prowess turns the attention to the melody and what can be done to transform the song into a dance floor smooth criminal. He speeds up Kate’s original vocals in sort of Flanger and Wah Wah effect that complement the disco house production. Whether you play this in your living room or in a club you’re sure to get props for this one. Everyone knows the lyrics and no one can escape the infectious beat that the frenchman stamped on it.

Chrome Canyon – Suspended in Gaffa (feat. Phoebe Oglesbee)

I was in a thrift store today and heard this song playing over the speakers. I immediately recognized it from somewhere, but couldn’t pinpoint exactly where, so I asked the gal behind the register for the name. Apparently we were on the same wavelength, because she said she had just written down the name after having asked someone else. I remembered why I recognized the song though: Kate Bush. Both are oddly similar, but I personally prefer this one a little bit more. It’s catchy and fun, but it still captures that older sound. The vocals are creative too, just obscure enough where you can sing it in the shower but not necessarily sing along with your friends. Or maybe you can.

Anyways, it was a really nice thing to come home and listen to, and I’m thinking you guys will love it just as much as I do. It’s the perfect way to end the week 🙂

Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (Datassette Remix)

Kate Bush needs no introduction – 20 million records sold, got record deal at age 16 after being recommended by David Gilmour, yes Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, you get the idea. Producers Datasette, as talented as they are still have a few records to sell before achieving similar distinction. They released their first self-titled LP last year and have stayed in the public eye through a series of remixes, the latest being great version of Kate Bush’s 1985 lead single, Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God). This song has been remixed and sampled countless times so it was impressive to hear someone do it well yet again. The production captures an elegant balance of upbeat movement and laid back atmospheric instrumentation, perfect for the classic get up and go morning playlist. Very space age, enjoy.
