Ladyhawke – Blue Eyes (Jacques Renault Remix)

In time with the recently released album Anxiety, Modular Recordings sent us this sweet freebie. It’s a serious banger with a sick bass-line, claps, hi-hats, chopped vocals and cowbell & conga infused percussions that doesn’t let you stop moving side to side throughout.

Jacques Renault strips the original from its rock-centric melodies and also from most of the lyrics – selecting a verse or two and looping them as to not sway the listener out of the groovy trance he has carefully gotten you into with the addition of every instrument. It is such a departure from the original that I truthfully don’t believe that he/she who loves the original will go crazy for this rendition; and viceversa.

In Jacques mind it’s all about the “bitter end”, and you can feel this in his remix.

Make your run, make a fool of yourself
You’re an accident that’s waiting to happen
Life’s so short, so forget all the past
It’ll be there till the bitter end.”

It’s been a long time since we had any new Ladyhawke material and we welcome this remix to a new original even more.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Janvier

I haven’t posted anything in the New Year for two reasons, one I haven’t found a song worthy of your time and more importantly the 1st of the month is reserved for Steph Lund’s hit mixtape Le Miel du Mois and that’s how I wanted to set it off. Unfortunately the New Year means an even busier schedual for me so I can’t sit here and talk this one up as much as I’d like to but as usual Steph has given us a new mixtape with a unique flavor and vision, here are some words from the mixtape queen herself, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Janvier:
2010. May the year be: “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – Daft Punk. May we dance harder, love better, play faster, and live stronger. And if we do make mistakes in 2010, which we will, may they make the next step of our lives brighter and better for having made that mistake. Long live disco. Long live the dancefloor. Long live the queen. Long live the generation that is us. Happy New Year and welcome to 2010.”

Ladyhawke – Magic

My heart is dreaming but paris is screaming, paris is screaming all night long”

Ladyhawke is the solo project of New Zealand singer-songwriter Phillipa Brown, one of the top and best electro acts to come out of New Zealand in the past decade or so. Having just finished her tour in mid-November, plans for a second album and supporting tour has not been revealed just yet, though a new single “Magic,” was released in late October.

Her first album, which debuted in 2008, yielded 13 nominations in the New Zealand Music Awards and ARIA Music Awards, with eight wins total, a great feat for a debut album. Among the wins included NZMA wins for “My Delirium” as best single of the year as well as a win for “Album of the Year,” along with a win at ARIA for “Breakthrough Artist”. While “My Delirium” won recognition and praise, “Paris is Burning” was surprisingly a bit overlooked, and in my opinion, the best single from her debut album. While there’s some great remixes of the track from Cut Copy, Peaches and Alex Metric, I find the original in its best form.

Three things you may not know about Ladyhawke:

  1. She never wears women’s clothes, only menswear and boys underwear.
  2. She has Asperger syndrome, and believes much of her passion and obsession with music can be attributed to this.
  3. There’s a video game created in her honor, play it here.

One of my favorite quotes from Ladyhawke:

“We were all once teenagers, listening to music at full volume, jumping on the bed with the door shut.”

Listen to her latest single “Magic” below and one of my favorite tracks from 2008/my favorite from Ladyhawke “Paris is Burning”:

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Aout

New month – new Le Miel du Mois mixtape on EMPT. I would write more but it’s Saturday and I need to back out in the sun asap, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Aout:  Last month, one of the fans of the monthly mix, “kiki,” commented on how Le Miel du Mois: Juillet makes her feel: “like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” Le Miel du Mois: Aout, aims to invoke the same exact feeling, but with a few minor alterations: sans pants, and add in flashing, flashing, lights lights lightssss.”

Fred Falke – French House Remix King

Will French disco house ever get old? I don’t think so. Besides Don Diablo, I don’t many other producers with as many high quality remixes as 33 year old bass player turned producer, Fred Falke. Notice I said high quality, I know there are producers who release something new every two days but we’re talking about mixes that can last, that are many times more engaging and fulfilling than their original counterparts. Anyways, Falke is French and looks more like a member of a jam band than house producer (which should explain the picture of Little Boots). His sound is infectious, uptempo yet never overbearing. Think of it as the perfect background music for your bachelor pad dinner parties. He did some of his most notable non-remix work fellow French co-producer Alain Quême, also known as Alan Braxe, a key figure in the French Electro scene. Together the duo produced what some would describe as very tasteful and glamorous dance music – check out Bliss. Sadly, the two have recently parted ways but continue to make great music. Here’s are some EMPT favorites. Enjoy.
