LCD Soundsystem – Pow Pow

All my friends are starting to be so defined and refined. Everyone’s one way or the other, they’ll never do this, they’ll always do that blah blah blah. The Stones’ Mother’s Little Helper has one of the best intro’s I’ve ever heard and it perfect;y explains how I feel about these grown ups – “what a drag it is getting old…” The other song that says it all is LCD Soundsystem’s Pow Pow. Every now and then I like to post a song and just let the lyrics do the talking, this is one of them…

And it goes pow, pow…

From this position I can see both of them
From this position I totally get how the decision was reached
From this position I can say “serious” or “cop-out” or “hard to define”
From this position, from this position
It’s kind of like eating myself to death

You on the outside , Me on the inside
There’s advantage to both
And me being uptight and you being all right
There’s advantages to each

From this perspective, from this position, I have a good grip on both of them
Because I have stayed home and have learned a little more about my neighbourhood, which is important
You know, there’s a lot of good places to eat

So it goes pow, pow…

With you on the keystroke and me in the gang blank
There’s advantages to both
And you have been all right and I have been filmed being ridiculous
Oh, eat it, Michael Musto you’re no Bruce Valance
I have been untied and you are all cross-eyed
There’s advantages to each
And I’m coming back, coming back, coming back
Until there’s nothing left in the well
Is that what they call it, the well?

I’m paralyzed and looking through you
But if nothing’s right, we try anyway
As we compromised an arrogant person
I’m amazed at my decision to blame

On this occasion, there are a couple of things that we know that we learned from fact magazine
One, the king wears a king hat and lives in a king house
Two, your time will come, but tonight is our night, so you should give us all of your drugs
Three, we have a black president and you do not, so shut up,
because you don’t know shit about where I’m from that you didn’t get from your TV

So times have been tough, and times have been tough
You have been put down, washed up, erased out
But honestly, and be honest with yourself, how much time do you waste?
How much time do you blow every day?

So pow, pow… The return of the police!

With you on the inside, me on the outside
There’s advantages to both
With me being wired, and you being tired
There’s advantages to each

From this position, I feel affinity for the both of them, which is confusing
But honestly, I should be careful because otherwise, I’m being, I’m being, you know, what’s it called?
Oh, fuck it
Reclining, I’m getting used to it
Like kissing under a bridge
It’s an entirely new discovery…

A couple of weeks at home
And then a couple of weeks away
And then home and away, again
To use up your desire for discovery…

For an instant, you could have pushed through
But it’s a plagiarized regret anyway
But what you want for now is someone to feel you
And that’s the thing you like, is planning to stay

The return of the police!

Shit Robot – Take ‘Em Up (Feat. Nancy Whang)

Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot is a OG when it comes to electronic pop. He played a vital role in the musical development of DFA Records which has arguably been one of the most influential crews in the electronic dance movement of recent years. I mean the label is home to Hercules & Love Affair, The Juan Maclean, Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Prinzhorn Dance School, Shocking Pinks, The Rapture, Black Dice, Delia & Gavin, Still Going, Holy Ghost!, Runaway, Free Blood, YACHT are that’s just a few. All that noise and it was only formed 2001, it’s very inspirational. James Murphy and gang have an understand for the nature of fads and hype that’s very uncommon in these fluffy times, their fresh and witty slogan says it all…

Too old to be new, too new to be classic”

Anyways, Take ‘Em Up is the lead single from an Lambkin’s upcoming album From The Cradle to the Rave. The album is the veteran DJ’s debut LP and it is the pinnacle of a very long and successful career in the NYC underground dance scene. Take ‘Em Up is simple, dark and sexy. LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang is on the vocals and delivers a flawless performance. There’s a certain maturity and sophistication to Lambkin’s production style that screams timelessness. There’s not much to this track and the focus is purely on groove and feel. You’d be hard pressed to find 21 year old making music like this, though there are a couple out there doing so. The track feels perfect for this cold Tuesday morning in holiday rehab so press play and repeat as necessary, enjoy.

Free Energy – Something In Common

Back at the Mondrian and loving every moment of it. I’m about to go check out Silverlake and Echo Park as I consider moving out here so if anyone knows of some other neighborhoods I should check out…

If you Seven Thirty that means you crazy, Hit me on the hip means page me…” – Big L (Ebonics)

I was at a show in Philly last month and it was hot as balls outside so I walked into a store store to buy a t-shirt and there was a song playing in the background that caught my attention. It was Something In Common, the new song my the Philly quartet Free Energy. This mellowed out, worry free song has a bass line that’s as catchy as they come. The song is about two lovers who find out the only thing the have in common is the fact that they want to move on. This seems like a strange thing to embrace but it has greater implications. Many of us focus on the past or what’s going on at the moment when bad things are happening. However, the focus should always be on what you want, not what you don’t want. When he acknowledges that they both want to move on he’s aknowleding that it’s time to move on but it’s for the better, hence the assurance repetitions…

So beginning tonight
Well you can change your mind
You know it’s never too late
You’re gonna be alright, alright

Alright, time to hit the streets of LA and make some decisions, enjoy.

Brigitte Bardot – Tu Veux Ou Tu Veux Pas

I’ve been listening to a lot of ’60’s French Pop and ran into this amazing song about one of the worlds most common creatures – the flip flopper. While a serious topic indeed this song makes light of the consistently inconsistent nature of some people and I couldn’t agree more with that approach. Recently I’ve been feeling like Peter from Office Space, I got hypnotized and realized just how much we worry about some things that do nothing to help whatever problems or issues we may be having. I’m going start treating life like the interview with the Bob’s…

La vie! pour moi elle est magnifique
Faut pas que tu la compliques
Par tes hésitations”

I’m starting to see that life is about love and that doesn’t really leave much room for anything else. Give it however you can, if it gets reciprocated cool if not still give it, if it gets misunderstood make it clear and if they don’t want it give it to someone who does. I guess it’s more a state of being than an understanding so it’s hard for me to explain.

I wish that we could talk about it, but there that’s the problem.” – LCD Soundsystem

Anyways, Bardot is a former model, actress, singer and animal rights activist most famous for her role in the controversial film by Roger Vadim Et Dieu… créa la femme (And God Created Women). While extremely vauge and playful, there’s something about this songs lyrics that just makes sense of the people who think so much they can’t feel and feel so much they can’t think. La vie!

Brigitte Bardot – Tu Veux Ou Tu Veux Pas

Florence + The Machine – Rabbit Heart-Raise It Up (Switch Remix)

Well, the E.M.P.T. pre-party for our bigger and badder one year anniversary party was a huge success and we’d like to take a moment to thank everyone that made it out, we enjoyed your company and hope to have more and more reasons to keep celebrating, see you in November.

As many of you know, the first of the month on E.M.P.T. means a new tape from mixtape guru Steph Lund. However, I was in severe recovery mode after the party so not much got done around these parts so this months mixtape will be a day late but here nevertheless. Without further ado, here are some words from the genius herself, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Octobre

The art of “the repeat”. When I fall in love with a song, its always the same, I can tell instantly whether I am going to completely love it in the first 10 seconds. This is usually followed by playing the song over and over until I can anticipate every beat and lyric.

Le Miel du Mois repeats one of my new favorite artists: UK’s The xx. Enjoy, and be sure to: repeat.”

LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great

I wish that we could talk about it, But there, that’s the problem.”

One of the best feel records in recent history. By far my favorite LCD Song. Never gets old.
