Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop (feat. Wanz)

If there was a song for a generation, I’d have to throw this one up there. I cannot go a day without walking around the city and seeing someone in a fantastic outfit and finding out most of it was thrifted. It is truly a skill, thrifting. It requires patience and dedication. Most people I know who are all-star thrifters are in the store every other day. I don’t have that much dedication..which probably explains why my wardrobe is basic compared to others. I digress. This track is perfect. The old-school beat will get you up and moving, trying to crip-walk, drop low, and bounce your shoulders whilst snapping and doing a mini-kissy face looking side to side (at least I do that…).

Macklemore is the stage name of Seattle-based musician (and regulation hottie) Ben Haggerty. Working alongside fellow Seattle-er, Ryan Lewis, the two dropped Macklemore’s sophomore album, The Heist earlier this month. This track blew up on iTunes and for obvious reasons. The lyrics are witty and the Haggerty’s delivery is shameless. In a hip-hop scene where making it rain and dropping designer names is the thing to do, Macklemore is spittin’ the truth. With beats as raw as Lewis’, if you’re not up and moving to this song than something isn’t right. This track is ironic hip-hip at its finest.

Check out the video, too (tell me you’re not drooling a little over Haggerty). It’s hip-hop opulence in thrifted glory. I can dig it.

I’ma take your grandpa’s style, I’ma take your grandpa’s style,
No for real – ask your grandpa – can I have his hand-me-downs?”
