Video: Lana Del Rey – Love

To be young and in love..”

This track literally gave me chills, goosebumps, deja vu, an out of body orgasm…  I don’t think I have ever been disappointed by Lana, and was ecstatic to find out she came out with a new track.  There is so much about this track that makes it amazing, the effortless classic vocals, sexy and fluid.  Next is the emotion and beauty from Lana both in the emotion she exudes in the lyrics and in her classic beauty that you don’t see very often, I can’t stop staring, everything about this is classic yet easily relatable and modern.  I could see this track being the theme for every new feature film, it fits in with so many genres because of it’s booming hook that really is so diverse if your mind is able to think beyond the confines of what we automatically categorize love to be.

Ahh to be young and in love (and so naive, ha).  I don’t really know what that feels like anymore, being in love, but I can’t wait to feel it again one day, it will be exciting, like jumping out of a plane with nothing but a parachute, I remember that feeling and I want it to be just like that.  Love for me the last few years was more like walking in eggs shells, no wait not even egg shells, more like walking on sand that has little shards of glass and you have to walk as carefully as possible not to get jabbed.  I want the feeling of falling out of an airplane, heart racing, uncontrollable laughter and you don’t even know why but you don’t need to because it’s all so natural and beautiful.

Thanks Lana, I needed this, the video is awesome in its own right, I need to end this post so I can go listen and watch this a few more times.  I hope you all have the same reaction.

Good day my loves xx

NINA LUNA – Blaze

I understand the perspective of this track quite well or at least I did at one time.  I think I have grown from the perspective of holding on or not dismissing what I once had with someone.  You are able to dismiss once you are able to truly clear your mind and look at a situation not as yourself, if that makes sense, sort of like looking at your situation the way all of your friends and family did.  I think once you are able to do that, you are able to let go and see something for what it truly was.  No matter how much you may have loved someone, how much of yourself you gave for so many years, the truth can be hard to chew on and swallow, in the end when you realize you were so alone for all those years it’s as if you were dating a ghost.  The truth hurts but once you are able to swallow it and digest it you feel like a sane human being, you feel nourished, stronger.

I really enjoy the emotion is this track and in Nina Luna’s vocals, very beautiful and euphoric. We were lucky enough to be able to post this on the release date, so you will be some of the first to take a listen:

Written by Nina herself, “Blaze” is about refusing to give up on a turbulent love affair. Nina’s powerful vocals are at once sultry and haunting, drawing the listener in as she declares in the very first line “I will not dismiss what we had”. The dramatic track (co-produced by Nina Luna and LA producer CATALINE) is driven by booming orchestral drums and shimmering, sweeping synth melodies, delivering an epic, other-worldly sound.
Nina Luna is an LA-based singer-songwriter with a knack for writing emotionally honest lyrics paired with unforgettable hooks. Her music showcases a signature air of mysticism, shadowy introspection and the heart of a brooding romantic. She plans to release a 3-track EP in early Spring 2017 and will be announcing several live performance dates in support of her new music.”

Happy Friday, enjoy!

Spread Love Not Hate…

Let us not forget how we all got here, love is what made us, not hate.

As a women I made choices that changed my life forever because I chose to listen to my heart and my body.  Everyone one has a job to do whether you are a women, a man, gay, straight, black or white, red or gold and that job is to create love, peace and freedom through our positive actions.

To our very young and wildly innocent generation. May this world make you feel strong, powerful, loved and respected.  May this world become a safe and peaceful place for you to spread your wings and be who you want to be. ~Little Bear

We are the mirror as well as the face in it.

galaxylovers

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.

We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity. We are pain
and what cures pain, both. We are
the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.

I want to hold you close like a lute,
so we can cry out with loving.

You would rather throw stones at a mirror?
I am your mirror, and here are the stones.

Retro Culture – Weekend

Weekends are precious to me, a young 20-something “professional” who works the traditional 9-5 office job. I finally understand what “living for the weekend” means! I cram most of my life into those 8 days a month, sometimes sacrificing a vacation day in order to extend a weekend trip. Who really wants to fly to San Francisco and spend only 2 days there? Or anywhere lucrative for that matter? One of the hardest transitions from college was giving up my 3-day weekends! Two days isn’t enough time to relax and get sh*t done! Seriously! Who can I write a letter to about this? C’est la vie unless I start working for myself. One day…

Two days makes weekends more cherishable, to say the least. Priorities start to arise. Who will we spend these precious hours with?

Tell me where you’re going tonight. Maybe we can meet there

Retro Culture, a one-man band comprised of Matt Connelly, blends electronic sounds with hip-hop percussion in this slightly addictive track, “Weekend”. I particularly enjoy the voice manipulations that introduce the song during the first 30 seconds and extend fleetingly throughout the remainder of the song. Matt’s mellow voice mixes well with the dreamy synth. It sounds like it would perfectly fit into a love story about two lost souls, yearning for each other yet both unsure of its longevity. They met on a friday night, had a weekend fling, and didn’t expect it to get so deep. There was surely a connection, which neither party can forget. There’s a niggling feeling, as the next weekend rolls around, that they both feel; they both want to feel that spark again. They carry on as friends, but there’s an unspoken bond which neither has the courage to address. So they just go through the motions, knowing that each subsequent weekend is an opportunity to tighten the unspoken bond.

I don’t wanna see the end of this.

Take advantage of those two short days! Do you want to spend your precious weekend living in comfort and habit, binge watching Netflix and eating frozen pizza? Or will you be living novel experiences, possibly with a new companion?

A little fun for the weekend.

Your Best Warpaint is Your Smile.

ram dass

Once upon a time several years ago I was walking down the street in Manhattan. I’d just gotten out of my 8 am class and was feeling pretty blurg, ambling and spacing as usual. Out of nowhere a Tibetan Buddhist monk crossed my path on the sidewalk and flashed me the biggest, most genuine smile. I’d never felt such warmth from a stranger– especially walking the streets of NYC. Automatically I grinned right back at him, reciprocating the love if only for a second due to the transitory nature of the experience.

After this brief encounter I found myself unable to inhibit myself from smiling at everyone for several hours. Kinda creepy, yeah. But also a really fun social experiment. Still buzzing in my mini-state of euphoria, I posted up at a coffee shop and indulged in manic writing mode for a couple of hours; suddenly the whole big city- lonely people paradigm started to make some sense to me:

A city saturated by individualistic drive and ambition, it’s easy to get lost in your own head while walking down the street. I-Me-Mine, I-Me-Mine, I-Me-Mine. We confabulate and thus, precipitate our own suffering all day err day. It sucks, but it’s human nature and the whole point is to figure this out. You are free to choose your experience— adjust your focus and take what you want from a situation whether it’s through the lens of love (or fear).

“…Why not become the one
Who lives with a full moon in each eye
That is always saying,
With that sweet moon
Language
What every other eye in this world
Is dying to
Hear.” – Rumi

Et Musique Pour Tous Presents: Les Auteurs — Ashley Hefnawy

We love the trials and tribulations of relationships. If you’re a regular reader of EMPT, you probably already know that. We love love. It’s a complex, difficult, struggling aspect of life, and yet, it’s so easy to rant about. I personally appreciate it because I am not currently in love. Because of that, I geekily analyze every song that even mentions love. All of it is intriguing to me, the beginning, the plot line, the plateau, and the eventual decline. In some rare instances, we find ourselves in situations of “everlasting love.” If you’re in one of those situations at the moment, then you have that extra level of faith that it will continue for you, and you know that it will never falter, no matter your circumstances. I believe I’ve experienced a love like that with people in my life, not necessarily intimate, and I cherish that.

So when Indie Shuffle came to us and asked us to build a themed playlist, I relished the notion of creating a themed playlist that could be about anything I wanted. For the record, every fabulous EMPT writer will have the chance to put together and publish a playlist using Indie Shuffle’s “collections” — which is basically, internet technology that allows you to make playlists and share them with others on your blogs. It’s a beautiful thing.

In this first edition, you’ll notice that the song titles are particularly specific to certain levels of a relationship. The beginning, for me at least, is the friendship that you don’t realize, is turning into something more. It’s the surprise, the moment you go to one of your friends and question, “Is it possible that he likes me? He’s been hitting me up a lot more than usual lately, I honestly thought we were just friends…But he’s so sweet.” Without even realizing, things begin to fall into your lap, and all of a sudden, you’re in blissful love. You stare at each other in parks as if there’s no one around; you know every fleck of brown and orange and yellow in their green/blue eyes. Your heart is on the verge of heart attack every time an intimate moment occurs. It’s easyOne day you wake up and your world is dictated by someone else — how did this happen? You’re so New York City independent, you foxy woman, you. You have your own life, your own friends, and your own weekend plans — but all of a sudden, you don’t. You want to know what they’re doing before you even know what you’re doing. And that scares the shit out of you, causing to look at life with a fearful eye — you’re afraid. And you tell them. But they respond with fear, too, and you both embrace it. If you’re going to fall into this hole, you’re going to fall down together. So you bask in this lavish glory, one of you treats the other like a precious diamond and you go out to expensive dinners and wear expensive shoes. Your life is suddenly wild and you have no idea how it happened.

And then one day you wake up next to this person and you don’t even know who they are. Life’s caught up to you and you’re disgusted by yourself. Or, alternatively, they have that realization about you. Either way, you just wish things could stay like they were before. You want to go back to the park on the water, where you both admitted fear and love all at once. Where you cried because it was overwhelming. You want them to stay. And like that, you’re attempting to move on. It’s over and you’re trying to heal your heart, trying to heal the universe that’s been built around you. You want to get better, but you don’t know how. So you numb the pain. And it turns you into this uptight alternate version of yourself. Or sometimes, it doesn’t. Sometimes, it just makes you into this seemingly carefree human, devoid of emotion, wanting to “experience it all.” You’re trying to embody the idea of a twenty-something.

But deep deep down, you know the environment in which your heart belongs. You just don’t know who should hold it.

This mix is for the love-missers. Hell, I know I miss it. Yeah, I love different people in my life. I allow that emotion to embody different moments of my days, and sometimes, I’m so overwhelmed by it, that I cry. But I never cry in the way that I do when I’m in love with just one person in just one way. And that’s what I miss. I think we all miss that.

Without further ado, please enjoy this first edition of Les Auteurs. And thank you, Indie Shuffle, for giving us this awesome opportunity to tell a story with a playlist.

Capital Cities – Nothing Compares 2 U

tumblr_static_tumblr_mnvpq4wahq1s38g4bo1_500

Love is treated as this whole big, amorphous concept that no one can quite explain. Is it physical? Opposites attract? Pheromones? Genetic? It’s the soul?

Who knows, and frankly, who cares?

When you’re in love, the answer is obvious. And it’s circular. Love is what I feel for that person. Your feeling becomes the definition. How I feel now is love.

Everyone experiences love in a different way. Everyone experiences everything in their own way. My orange might be your blue, but neither one of us would ever know the difference. Some love is quiet and contained, some is loud and sloppy; some is serious and some is humorous.

But one aspect of love is constant across the spectrum:

When you love someone, nothing compares to them. Nothing. That’s my definition. Take it as you will.

Monarchy – It Must Be Love

m5

Aren’t we over the whole “hide my face to boost interest in my music” thing? Or is it, “hide my face to make a statement that no one actually gets but just nods along anyway”?

Daft Punk is allowed to do it, because they invented it and have done it big. Those helmets ain’t cheap, and pre-helmet they did some freaky shit to keep their mugs out of the press room.

New artists out there: stop. It doesn’t make you cool.

I’m not talking about artists who keep their identities secret. That actually is cool, and totally understandable. Sustainable? Not unless you’re Banksy, who is definitely paying people off. Even Burial wanted to play live eventually (though the fact that he, with his music and creepy same-nameness  to a funeral director, was unknown for so long was perfect).

You know what is cool? Good art. If you make it, they will stream.

Monarchy are caught in a weird in-between state of face-coverage. Their identities are known, and they are regularly photographed without costume. But in all official photos, they are obscured. I guess they perform in face paint, which is played out but still allowed.

Luckily they are saved from their confusion by excellent music. “It Must Be Love” is a slice of juicy synth pop served on a platter of onyx rhinestones that will worm its way into your psyche. Imagine a happier Presets, or a better Bravery, two bands in the same vein (please, Monarchy, don’t be offended by the Bravery comparison. I know that might seem harsh).

It must be love
 With a boxing glove
 It must be love.”
