Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre 2011

I’ve never been a big fan of looking back, sure it’s comforting to reminisce about the good old times…

Hey you know everybody’s talking about the “good old days”
Everybody! The good old days
Well, let’s talk about the good old days…” – Gladys Knight

But in my mind the past does more harm than good. If you think about the past so much you’re going to constantly be ignoring what’s happening to you right now. The past is good for one thing and one thing only – educating yourself, learning from your mistakes and those of others, otherwise it should be avoided like the plauge. Your current situation is a result of your past thinking and thus your future situation will be a result of your thinking right now! However, if you keep thinking the same sh*&tty thoughts because you can’t stop thinking about the past you’re going end up with the same result. It will happen over and over and again and you’ll just be wondering why but the past is why…

Life is like a treadmill ni*#@s running in place,
Getting no where fast, a whole year done passed…” – Jay-Z (It’s Like That)

Like I said, the value of the past is education, it’s the only way to break the pattern. Otherwise it already happened and if you really think about it, it doesn’t even exists anymore, it’s literally just in your head. My conductor, the late great Walter J. Turnbull always told us – “you’re only as good as your last show.” That always stuck and it means more to me now than ever. Think about your job, say you’ve put in years of service but if you start screwing up today it’s good bye. If you’re in a relationship, those first months or years we’re wonderful but if you stop showing love, caring to impress, to improve and always keeps things fresh things are bound to go sour…

You’re only as good as your last show” – Walter. J. Turnbull

So what does all of this have to do with LMDM? Well, if you’ve been following LMDM these years you’ll know that this ruthless forward thinking mentality is at the very nature of Steph’s mix tape series and listening to this special version inspired all these thoughts. For those unfamiliar with the series this is a great way to get to know it, here’s why

Instead of a “best of” 2011 artist and songs mix,  our end of the year mix is a compilation of the best of LMDM’s of 2011. I tried to chose one track from each month, of the past 11 LMDMs but that was tough and turned into two select tracks per month, because lets face it, 22 tracks is better than 11 and I wanted this holiday tape to be a BIG one. Every LMDM I listen back on reminds me of what I did that month and the little moments that made the month, and piled on, that made the year. …Here’s to Hec and EMPT moving to LA and to a bigger better faster stronger 2012.

That said, here’s to the future, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Octobre 2011

After a month hiatus of Le Miel du Mois is finally back with it’s latest installment and man does it feel good to say that. I saw all the comments and got the emails, I missed it as much as you guys but Steph was in the process of leaving New York for London and I can only imagine how busy she must have been.

The LMDM tapes always seem to take me on this joyful ride of reflection and movement, I guess that’s why so many of us have come depend on it to get our months started.  It’s been a crazy two months around these parts, we’ve got more business then ever and it’s been quite the challenge to manage all of life’s offerings with equal care and attention. Not too long ago I would have felt overwhelmed right now but these days I’m all about welcoming challenges with open arms. When you want something you have to be willing to work for it, it takes discipline, constant adjustments and will but more importantly a perspective and understanding of process…

Flowers need water to grow, it gotta rain
And in order to experience joy you need pain
Every time a baby is born, somebody slain
You know the saying, somebody’s lose is another’s gain
The sun comes out when the water goes down the drain
When the rainbow in the cloud comes out we do it again…” Jay-Z (Gift & The Curse, Guns & Roses)

Anyways, this is another amazing tape completely in tune with the feeling of change offered by the season. So happy to have LMDM back, enjoy.

Its fall! The weather is perfect for some last minute solo strolls with this month’s LMDM. A lot of new artists included whose full EPs/albums are really worth the purchase. Be sure to check out more from Micachu & the Shapes, Ghostpoet, Breton, and 17 year old Zoo Kid. Also, some great new albums out including  The Rapture, M83 and Real Estate, all of which have some new tracks included in the latest mix.’

with love from London! xxx Steph…

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2 b by Ryan Radler

So I’ve been stuck in the Dominican Republic since my gig on Saturday thanks to the ultra hyped junior hurricane Irene. The irony of being stuck in the Caribbean because of a hurricane in New York of all places is pretty funny but it’s beautiful down here so I’m not complaining. Saturday at Praia down here was sick, the ShaveUrLegz.com did it up with the promotion and the place was packed and bumpin’ all night. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, these guys are doing something fantastic for Dominican culture and I couldn’t feel more privileged be a part of it. There will be a lot more going on between us so stay tuned for the exciting future developments.

In case you didn’t notice, I didn’t get around to posting much this weekend, the island sun was calling me and I had no choice but to listen. However, the show much go on and today we have yet another exclusive release from the main man Ryan Radler. I’ve been partying nonstop since I got here and now I’m finally poolside in my hotel with this tape in the background and the vibe is sublime. As you can see from this website, I’m not into musical monogamy, I listen to EVERYTHING, including country and that’s one of the reasons I love these tapes so much. Ryan wonderfully balances the chilled out summer theme but is never restricted to any particular style of genre. For the musically promiscuous like myself a wonderful treat. Anyways, you guys already know this by now so I’m going to go continue enjoying DR, won’t be back for at least another two weeks so I have to make it last. Enjoy.

M83 – Fall (From TRON: Legacy RECONFIGURED)

I just watched Tron for the first time and thankfully it was on a big screen with a big boy sound system because the Daft Punk curated soundtrack absolutely blew my mind. It was meant to be listened to in surround, loud and with some serious bass so if you haven’t seen it yet make sure you watch it/hear it that way. Funny thing is most people I talk to didn’t like Tron but if you couldn’t tell I’m big on Sci-Fi and the Space Age, couple that was state of the art sound and I’m sold.

It was for this very reason that I got so hyped when I heard about the upcoming upcoming soundtrack remix album featuring work by heavy hitters like Moby, Paul Oakenfold and The Crystal Method. I quickly hit up all my resources to get my hands on some tracks and found the M83 vs Big Black Delta remix of Fall which is nothing short of amazing. The track is all feeling and passion, if you’re in need of motivation and inspiration close your eyes and turn this up.

The last few weeks have been crazy for reasons I’m not even ready to share yet. One thing I’ve always known but tend to forget is just how mental problems can be. It’s so easy to get caught up in thoughts, thinking the worse and dramatizing what is probably a a manageable problem. Dwelling in your issues does nothing but magnify them and attract that energy. Thoughts are things and if you’re not careful your mind can work against you. However, if you’re passionate and disciplined enough to take control of your mind then sky the limit…

Anything left out you can blame it on the brain not the heart, I’m playing my part…” – Memphis Bleek

Anyways, this remix has me thinking champion thoughts and it just became my new anthem. I can’t wait to till this lame snow goes away and I can play this on a run or something, enjoy.

M83 – We Own The Sky

Before I get into todays regularly scheduled programming, I thought I’d take a moment to thank all of you for reading E.M.P.T!

You could have been anywhere in the world, but you’re here with me. I appreciate that.”

To everyone that’s emailed me with those kind words you really make it all worthwhile, all the people from HypeM & Elbo.ws, you make us pop! This blog has grown to something much bigger then I ever could have anticipated and you guys make it possible. As you’ve probably come to realize, I have no reservations about telling you how I feel, and I also believe in giving people flowers while they can still smell them so in the words of 2 Pac – “You are appreciated.” Let’s keep rocking.

With that said, I’m E.P.M.D. back to business! I had a meeting last night with the founders of Afrojacks.com and I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to build with fellow young entrepreneurs.

We got now, we don’t care who got next.” – Iceberg Slim

Pretty much the only idol I have is Quincy Jones, and while being a bad ass musician himself, Quincy understood the power of bringing the best of the best together to create a freak of nature product that no one man could have ever achieved. I mean Thriller, the real blueprint, is the biggest selling record of all time and it was all because of the teamwork and sense of unity Quincy was able to create as a producer. That album came to be because a lot of extremely talented and successful individuals came together to create one product and make it the best they could. All those people would have been just fine on their own, believe me, Quincy wasn’t in dire need of working with Michael and Eddie Van Halen was doing better then ok before going in and setting the speakers on fire for the Beat It solo. What I’m saying is, all the young people need to get this going, make our mark and contribute, it’s our turn… I’m posting this M83 song for two reasons. One, it’s amazing and two, we own the fu&#ing sky! Let’s get it.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Aout

New month – new Le Miel du Mois mixtape on EMPT. I would write more but it’s Saturday and I need to back out in the sun asap, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Aout:  Last month, one of the fans of the monthly mix, “kiki,” commented on how Le Miel du Mois: Juillet makes her feel: “like dancing around the edge of a pool late night with a drink and a cigarette and oversized t-shirts and sometimes getting pushed in and you never remember the photos that get taken but you laugh the whole time,” Le Miel du Mois: Aout, aims to invoke the same exact feeling, but with a few minor alterations: sans pants, and add in flashing, flashing, lights lights lightssss.”
