Picture Book – Sunshine (Justin Faust Remix)

From the first listen I fell in love with this one. I know it sounds like a friday tune, but when music is this good, it works any good day. Justin injects a powerful 80’s influence to the happy-go-dancing original version – which I found out that the original version has additional production and mixing by Hugo Leclercq, a.k.a. french boy wonder Madeon– from there the heritage of that signature synth work on the song’s bridge. It’s as if -through it- Hugo’s letting everyone know who’s partly responsible for your frantic dancing while enjoying this one. It’s very coherent to hear the work of the little electro-pop prince on the original when nowadays no one’s doing it like he is.

If you’re wondering why the vocals on this one sound so familiar it’s because the Liverpool-based brother duo of Picture Book teamed with Deadmau5-fame Greta Svabo Bech for the composition and recording.

“You are like the sunshine

You sleep like the moonlight

I feel like the summer, inside

Making towers in my hay
All the games we used to play
Painting clouds with our hands, in the sky
See the rainbow every day just keeps on getting better

You are the mountains, I am the ocean
You are the sunlight when I am frozen
You are the reason I’m getting closer
To where we used to be

I know that we will change
Every thing will stay the same
But these days are here now, remember
See the rainbow every day just keeps on getting better

You are the mountains, I am the ocean
You are the sunlight when I am frozen
You are the reason I’m getting closer
To where we used to be.”

Bogotá, Colombia is the latin version of London, hence why I’ve only seen 5 days of sun in 5 months. Today is one of them, so all hail the sunshine.

Madeon – Finale (Original Mix)

This track has been staring at me for a while now, I don’t know why I didn’t automatically jump on this one right away but the good news is that I am jumping on it now.  Madeon or Hugo Pierre Leclercq, turns up the electro pop dial to the redzone, and the name of this track couldn’t be more spot on.  Finale, with its dramatic bass and electric waves of emotion, you almost feel like this track is some ending to an amazing story or movie surrounding the hero with this life like aura bubble.

The feelings this song gives me is this air of putting ourselves in the position of ultimate sacrifice.  Probably not in the sense that you are thinking, but what I am talking about is taking that leap into what scares you the most, the things you love, your passion, the people you love, not taking a step back, but taking 10 steps forward and not being so damn scared all the time of failure.  I think we make so many excuses about our lives, or our passions, why we might be failing.  Well then you know what, find a new fucking dream.  Excuses don’t exist, its hiding behind this imaginary wall that cannot save you, believe me,  I am not just talking out of my ass right now.  We need to realize all the superficial things we make up in our heads and create an anthem for ourselves, or an aura if you will that makes us fearless.

Madeon does a great job of creating that emotion I talk a lot about in music, the big mixture of sounds that takes you out of your element and throws you into something completely new and daring.  If you cannot come up with your own unique anthem today, then I think this is a good one to make you feel powerful and in control!

It’s a new month, September 1st, and Summer is about over, so make it all count, enjoy!

Martin Solveig – The Night Out (Madeon Extended Mix)

It’s been six months since I left the big apple for the city of angels. I took the Creative Director job over at The Playlist Generation and I love it so there hasn’t been much looking back. But LA isn’t New York and to a kid use to the the New York minute that slow LA pace can get to you. Needless to say when that plane started pulling into JFK, a landing strip I’m all too familiar with, it felt good to finally be back home. I get to see all my friends and family and the occasion calls for something big and these days few do big like the boy wonder Madeon.

This The Night Out remix was released a few weeks ago Martin Solveigs EP and talk about a hype beast. I like Madeon for many reasons but something that always stands out to me is how uplifting and feel good his tracks are. His chord progressions never go into the dark side and it’s a conscious decision on his part that I appreciate and totally dig. Bump this and get the weekend started right, enjoy.

Madeon – Icarus

Since we first talked Madeon he’s collaborated with Deadmau5, his Pop Culture Mash was an internet sensation, he started a label called Popcultr and his epic video game adventure/electro sound has grown to be beloved by everyone. Yesterday he officially released Icarcus on his own label, oh and did I mention he’s only 17? Technically the kid can run with the best of them which leaves him two choices, make what everyone is making or zone out into something new, something different. It’s no secret that he chose the latter. His arrangements are full of dramatic chillwave break downs, banging verses, main room build ups, tasteful glitch and everything good that modern production has to offer. This is another one of those tracks that will surely lead to a speeding ticket, just listening to it makes me want to hit the highway very fast. I think it might be healthy for me to hit a track at this point, this speed obsession could get me in trouble. Anyways, I couldn’t ask for a better pick me up on this Monday morning, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2A by Ryan Radler

Last week we experienced some major player hating from The Man that eventually led to a subpar release of anti-winter 3A. If you haven’t heard or downloaded that one yet check out last weeks post here and spread the word, the kid Ryan Radler is bringing nothing but heat and something that good should not be left unknown. We’ve had many set backs with The Industry & it’s minions in our day but every time we come back swinging even harder and this time it’s no different. We’re 4 weeks and running with exclusive releases of the absolute best summer mixtape series on the web and we couldn’t be more excited about it. When we’re done with the anti-winter series I’m going to do a post featuring all of them so you guys can see just what this guy is doing here. From the custom artwork to the limitless sounds, these tapes are bleeding style and we can’t take ’em for granted…

I ended up spending the entire winter of 2011 developing all my mixes. Cold, blustery weekends you could find me snug in my loft researching and archiving the songs that I would then throw into Logic Pro for the fine-tuning mix sessions. In a cathartic twist, projecting myself into the Summer through the mixes actually made me forget the void left after the January heat wave in LA. I have channeled my “yearning for Summer” through these mixes and now, after many months, we have finally arrived!

We like to use music around these parts for all sorts of healing so that philosophy is right up our alley. Is it just me or does that blonde have really nice hair? Alright, I’m gonna go get all my work done to this fantastic soundtrack, you should do the same. Enjoy.

Madeon – Pop Culture (Live Mashup)

My fabulous partner in crime Ashley linked me this video the other day: French DJ/Producer Madeon casually posted a Pop Culture live mash-up of old and new tunes that will surely prep you for the weekend.

The first thing that caught my attention about Madeon’s video was how simple and straightforward it is: it simply states “Here are 39 songs I like.”

And just like that, you feel your eyes open up when you hear a faded Kylie Minogue “Wow!” followed by an “It’s Dare” from all-time favorite, Gorillaz. One thing that the dancer part of my brain noticed about this video is that it only shows the French producer’s hands tapping away at a Novation Launchpad; he’s hitting those button’s as smoothly as a hip hopper will move his feet.

On a personal note, I just turned 20 a month ago, and it’s been a month filled with looking back at lessons learned, and looking forward to an exciting decade. I feel the same way about the work Madeon has done. I mean, can I just say that a good 80% of these songs have had an impact on my musical growth in their due time:

Aerodynamic (2001) – At the age of 10, myy brother convinces me to buy a Daft Punk cd and put that Josie and the Pussycats Soundtrack back in the rack. Thank you. Billie Jean (1983) – Ok, so I wasn’t alive when this track was a hit, but I guarantee you it was many-a-girls first dance recital song. It was mine anyway…

Raise Your Weapon Madeon Remix (2011) – Anthem of the college days I must say, and the download that lead me to re-discover EMPT this year.

And the best part about this release (besides the fact that Madeon is only 16 and his EP is due this summer), is that this is just a “little experiment” for him…

Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Deadmau5 – Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Extended Remix)

My red-eye flight got delayed 4 hours Monday night, there was an endless supply of crying babies everywhere I went and the lady sitting next to me was wearing dirty hospital scrubs on the plane. What are people thinking? I guess after an amazing weekend like that something had to go wrong. Anyways, I laid back in the cut yesterday to recover and now I’m back in action. It was good while it lasted but I’m so happy to be back in the big apple. I feel like a lot of places try to be a lot of things that New York is naturally

Here I am again in the city
With a fist full of dollars and baby you better believe:

I’m back! Back in the New York groove…” – Hello

Madeon, the 16 year old producer from France is absolutely smashing it these days. Pete Tong recently played his Raise Your Weapon remix on Radio One and his version of Que Veux Tuhas been everywhere and back. By the way this isn’t a bootleg, it’s an official remix released on Mau5trap so I’d say Madeon is doing pretty good as far as 16 year olds go. What’s his formula for success? It’s very simple, create and release great music and the rest will follow. If you’re a young artists pay close attention to this blueprint because it’s the only one that matters these days. I talk to a lot of older people in the music industry who are full of pessimism and don’t really understand the power of our generation, how we communicate and how we consume. Madeon is 16, he made a few remixes, probably didn’t make a dime from it but thanks for blogs and websites he got attention and now he’s in Deadmau5’s circle. I can name 15 other artists how have done the same in a heartbeat. This track is great and Madeon’s story is an inspiration to all of us. That said, I have to go work on my own story but here’s a mid-week banger to keep you going, enjoy.

Yelle – Que Veux Tu (Madeon Remix)

This track was produced by a 16 year old, you read it right, a 16 year old. Madeon is a teenager from France dropping bangers for places he can’t even get into. You may not know him but you’ll def know his remixee Yelle who is synonymous with French pop and house scene. The heartthrob nature of these lyrics confirm that but once again we witness the power of the producer . Madeon transforms the songs bubble gum feeling to a passionate, dramatic and exciting French electro house epic. If you were thinking about staying in tonight be careful playing play because this is going to make you move, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars 2011

There’s never been a ni$%@ this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this  hot or this strong
With so many different flows, this ones for this song
The next one I’ll switch up – This one will get bit up
These fucks to lazy to make up shit
They crazy, they don’t paint pictures
They just trace me.” – Jay-Z

That verse is exactly how I would describe Steph’s LMDM series, especially after the bomb she delivers this month. March crept up on us thanks to the February’s short month trickery and on the 28th I got an email from Steph reading exactly as follows –

its march tomorrow…..!!!!?!??!?!

LMDM is usually a month long project and I have to admit I was a little worried when I heard it this time around it was going to happen in about 24 hours but like a true champ Steph stepped up and absolutely crushed it. By now you’ve probably figured out that you can’t figure this girl out, I mean Skeeter Davis into Star Slinger?! How does it work, how is each tape so different month after month and I tip my hat to yet another fantastic installment of LMDM…

What more can i say?
What more can i do?
I give this all to you…”
– Hovito (What More Can I Say)

A 1964 song opens this one. Another track I wanted to single out is Star Slinger’s remix of The Go! Team’s Apollo Throwdown and also the Diamond Messages track, which I fell in love with on the spot when EMPT posted it a few weeks ago. I found 3D Friends when we interviewed the SKINS 19 year old music supervisor from London, you can check out that interview here, and the closer to the mix, White Wishes is another one to check out (all of their material is available to download for free on their bandcamp page)- everything I listen to by them I love. Have fun in the March moments.
