Goodknight Keaton Feat. Mereki – Next to Mexico

At its core, music is pure escapism. If you strip away all the fluff, people put on a record to transport their thoughts–to slip out of the now and into the past, the future, and to fantasy land. Whether I’m closing my eyes and envisioning a stroll on the moon (thanks Pink Floyd) or Margaritas from dawn till dusk (thanks Jimmy Buffet), the right music with a distinct vibe always whisks me away.

Destination I is pretty simple: The Beach. And when I think of recent bands and albums that have allowed me to do exactly this on many weekends with many friends with many libations, Miami Horror is at the top of that list.

Along with Bag Raiders’ self-titled album, the Horror‘s “Illumination” was a genuine masterpiece that I find myself returning to over and over again, filled with those perfect summery vibes from down under. But with a touch of enough storminess and soul to remain something more than just “more tropical disco.”

While Miami Horror has gone into a radio silence for over two years now, one member of the band, drummer Aaron Shanahan, is showing signs of life in the form of a side project, “Goodnight Keaton.”

“Next to Mexico” is a summer jam that signifies that start of summer in Australia and can keep those embroiled in the sub-32 freeze of winter a little hot and sweaty. It’ll make you wish you were–yes–on an island next to mexico. More importantly, this could be a signthat the Horror‘s creative juices are flowing and that they’ll soon be breaking their silence before the apocalypse…

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3 c by Ryan Radler

Today is a bittersweet story as it is with both sadness and joy that I present to you the 2011 conclusion to Ryan Radlers wonderful mixtape series, anti-winter 3 c. Week after week Ryan has given summer luxurious and comprehensive soundtrack setting a unique vibe for all our estival activities – Dear anti-winter, we’ll miss you.

When I use to perform classical music under the tutelage of the the late great Dr. Walter Turnbull we learned that clapping in between movements or grand pauses is inappropriate. That always fascinated me because Dr. T was an incredible teacher and got us sing classics like Cantata 191 with mind blowing passion, I’ve personally never connected with music more then when I use to sing under him, and I’ve definitely never heard classical music sound anywhere close to that good. When we would finish the audience would instantly forget the etiquette and start clapping before they realized what they were doing. The point is that getting into clap mode takes you away from the piece and the experience the composer was trying to create. In the age of skip everything and immediate satisfaction music is rarely given the time to develop and seduce and I think we’re deprived because of it.

Anyways, though they have little in common, Ryans work made me think of those performances because his tapes have the same beautiful structure and movement. I highly recommend just pressing play and allow yourself to be entertained. Sure you could skip around but it’s just sooo much better to sit back and let it breath, develop, settle, build back up and take you on a journey. Anti-winter 3C is yet another fantastic effort and we’re delighted to bring it to you, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R N I G H T S: a n t i – d a y 1a by Ryan Radler

I’m a hundred miles and running right now so I have no choice but to make this a quick one.

Ryan sent me a brand spanking new mixtape over the weekend and talk about perfect timing! My BB won’t stop buzzing with emails, I have music to produce, restaurants to curate, DJ sets to finish and all in the before Friday when I fly out to DR to spin at a beach party. Life is going fast right now and I have no intention on slowing up. Anyways, Ryan says this is a pensive tape but for those of us in the fast lane it’s more like the perfect balance. Gotta run but here are the notes I was sent regarding this tape, pretty much says it all, enjoy.

For all those who live in the fast lane, the new Anti-day series

THE HARD SELL
Ok so this week, I was hoping we could drop my SUMMER NIGHTS MIX: anti-day 1a. It’s a departure from the norm and could be a nice way to “mix up” the feature/series. The theme is a little more pensive and dare I say even a bit sensitive? I would suggest a WARNING to only play this thing at night when the mood is right. It’s sort of like in the movie Gremlins but opposite I guess. LOL. And anyways- Space Age Bachelor Pads only really come alive at night right? Mine does! HAHAHA!
Below is a short anecdote about my own personal experience with the mix:
MOONLIGHT DRIVE
I recently took my girl out in my 1983 Gold Datsun 280zx (“Goldie”) for a moonlight drive all over the hills and valleys of Los Angeles. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate moment to kick on my SUMMER NIGHTS MIX 1A.
It was a very hot day in LA so we also had the luxury of an unusually warm evening. We drove up the 110 freeway from Downtown  to Pasadena and beyond, weaving in and out of side streets and neighborhoods unknown. The bright, white moon was low in the sky, drifting behind the tall palm tree silhouettes- sometimes disappearing behind a hill of pine trees- only to reappear across a valley of orange street lamps and blinking buildings.
Halfway through the mix I realized that my acceleration and turning were being less directed by me and more by the beats and melodies of the music. The mix completely took over the steering wheel just like in Knight Rider or Iron Eagle!

s u m m e r n i g h t s: anti-day 1A

1. I Look To You – MIAMI HORROR (TIM FUCHS MAKE OUT REMIX)
2. Arcadia – APPARAT
3. Blood Bank – BON IVER (DUOSSEUDO REMIX)

5. Roll On – DNTL (FT. JENNY LEWIS)

7. The Night – FRANKIE VALLEY
8. A Fond Farewell – ELLIOT SMITH
9. E-bow The Letter – R.E.M.
10. Codex – RADIOHEAD
11. Life Is A Gamble – MARVIN GAYE
12. To The Lighthouse – MEMORY HOUSE
13. Was – VINCENT GALLO

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A by Ryan Radler

Ah yes Monday, Sunday’s hangover returns once again…

In recent news, the S&P downgraded the U.S. Credit and apparently no one knows what that means, the stock market is in shambles and it’s only getting worse, Big Boy from Outkast got arrested on drug charges, great times all around my friends. Thankfully, Mondays on EMPT now mean the release of a new Ryan Radler mixtape and let me tell you folk, there’s nothing like some good music to keep your perspective in these times. Last week Ryan sent me an email kicking it about the inception of these wonderful mixes and I’m posting here because it sounds like me an all of my friends every weekend and listening to the tapes it couldn’t make more sense. Anyways, I gotta go work on the music for a few restaurants but press play on another wonderful mixtape, check out Ryan on Facebook and try to ignore the 25% loss on your portfolio, it will get better as usual. Enjoy.

Back in my loft, I began dreaming of Summers-gone-by. I remembered one of my favorite summers back in 2008 in Van Nuys, CA.
1. Crashed random friend’s house + Belonged to gay x-pornstar (Scariest/Nicest guy I ever met)
2. One very clean, but very ghetto “above ground” Pool + Floating blow-up chairs
3. Blistering hot valley sun + Not a cloud in the sky!
4. 12 pack of Corona + 12 slices of lime
5. The Bestest of Friends + One great little Basenji Dog named “Ghost”
6. The “Western Electric” Summer mix PodCast + A really powerful set of surround-sound computer speakers
Item #1 through #5 were enough to make the day a perfect “10”, but it was #6- my friends’ Summer mix music on the stereo- that made the day live on in my mind, Without the music that made the soundtrack of my Summer, I might have forgotten all about this glorious time in my life. The mix was filled with summery Rock & Roll, Electronic, and Folk music infused with 70’s loungy vintage organs and horns with conga breakdowns and dirty jazz tones.. The podcast spoke to me. It reached out and grabbed me by the floaties and slowly drifted me around the pool. It popped the caps of my beers. It took all my calls and forwarded them to voicemail. It held my hand and kissed me on the cheek and told me everything would be alright- and it was.
I have searched high and low for this mix, but to no avail. No one seems to know where it came from or how to get it back. It was at this moment that I decided that instead dropping into my usual winter depression, I would begin my own homage to this one summer day and resurrect the Summer mix that I had loved so much back in Van Nuys.

S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3A :

1. Jump in the Pool – FRIENDLY FIRES
2. Make You Mine – MIAMI HORROR
3. Pacific Theme – BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
4. Un Homme Et Une Femme (Chant) – FRANCIS LAI
5. New Theory – WASHED OUT (RAC MIX)
6. Lisztomania – PHOENIX (Classixx Version)
7. Only Love Can Break Your Heart – I BLAME COCO
8. Puppets – DEPECHE MODE (ROYKSOPP REMIX)
9. Glad to Know You – CHAZ JANKEL
10. Heaven’s On Fire – THE RADIO DEPT.
11. Rad Racer – WORK DRUGS
12. Solitude Is Bliss – TAME IMPALA (MICKEY MOONLIGHT REMIX)
13. Zebra – BEACH HOUSE (RING TRACK REMIX)

Miami Horror – I Look To You (Feat. Kimbra)

Here I am again in the city
With a fist full of dollars and baby you gotta believe:
I’m back!
Back in the New York groove
I’m back
Back in the New York groove… – Hello (1975, New York Groove)

I just spent an overdue weekend out in South Hampton and who knew what a little fresh air and tennis could do so much for the spirit cause I’m back looking for the game like left something. I needed a song today that fit the fast life and pulse of this Miami Horror sounds custom made for this Monday morning. Not to mention how to the lyrics completely coincide some of the latest paradigms about time and control that we’ve started to understand…

I look to you…
The future we’ve found
To stay here on higher ground
I wanna change the future as I look into your eyes.”

There’s a sort of irony to the concept of being in the moment because if you don’t have a broad perspective and understanding of the future you’ll never truly be able to live in the moment. Having the confidence and understanding that the bright future is ahead eliminates a lot of the BS people deal with. Every single person on this earth is the most impressive and worthy creation in existence. I mean have you ever taken a moment to think about how impressive your make up is? We have super computers and mind blowing technology all over the place but still nothing comes anywhere close to our makeup. That said, all the hate and bitterness is simply not worthy of that wonderful reality. Kevin pointed out a line from Up All Night that pretty much explains it all…

F$&k I look like yo?
I look like yes and you look like no…” – Nicki Minaj

I would not want to look like no. Anyways, if you’re working hard, moving forward and keeping yourself in constant check you lose the ability to worry and can truly indulge in the moment. The past, well that doesn’t even exist so learn your lessons and say goodbye. Whenever you do think of the future you smile at the thought of how something can possibly be better than the most precious gift life gives us – right now. Enjoy.

The future we’ve found
To stay here on higher ground…”

Miami Horror – Sometimes

After a few notable remixes Benjamin Vanguarde aka Miami Horror has announced a debut album and released a new single that I can’t seem get enough of. I’ve said it before, when it comes to the whole electro-pop thing Australia has the game locked tight. I’ve heard some people say this sounds like Cut Copy and I can’t disagree but then again both acts are from Melbourne and artists inspire each other and that’s not a bad thing in my book.
Being half extreme realist and half fantasist I was completely taken on an adventure when listening to the songs lyrics. Addressing topics like youth, aging, doubt, discovery and adventure, this song represents that point when you see the light but can’t totally let go of the darkness.
I’m starting to realize that keeping your mind focused on the right things is one of the most challenging aspects of life one has to take on. Maintaining an awareness of both the good and the bad is a crucial part of maintaining balance in life, which to me means focusing on the bad is a crucial part of self-destruction. I’d write more about this but it’s lunch time and I’m starving so peace in the middle east, enjoy.
There’s something lurking from the shadows within
Stealing the colour and life from our skin
They fantasise fury at no extra cost,
Darkness approaches now we’re at a loss
