Miike Snow – The Wave (Flight Facilities Remix)

Miike-Snow-The-Wave-Flight-Facilities-Mix

It’s always magic in music when everything just seems to fit. The way the lyrics move through the melody to personify the words; the way the production works to emphasize the dissonance;  the way the sound pulsates through your veins, into your bones to resonate in your gut before bursting through your every pore in dance. There aren’t many tracks like that out there in the music sphere, but this one right here is a needle in a haystack.

Miike Snow is already a gem of a band. Their tracks and sound aesthetic consistently impress me. I have proof in my iTunes song counter that I kept it on repeat for a healthy couple of weeks when the song dropped. The video, too, was glorious. Factor in Aussie duo, Flight Facilities infectious electro-pop vision and we’ve got ourselves a brilliant piece of sound. Any more words on the track would ruin the experience for you. This is one track that doesn’t need much to back it up; it’s power speaks for it self. No, it’s power does more than speak; it’s power is felt.

Plug in your headphones, tune in, and begin your Thursday properly. Welcome to the new day.

We’ll all be staring at the same wave.”

Indeed, we will be.

The Amplifetes – You/Me/Evolution

Very little is known about The Amplifetes — and by very little I mean me. In fact, aside from the video that was released days ago, it was hell to find a promotional copy of the song. The video may just start as your average small-kids-do-grown-up-things-dressed-in-grown-up-clothes, but you soon realize that there is more that lies beneath the eternal 50-frames-per-second video clip that the Swedish quarter picked to complement their single.

One thing is a fact, you can’t help but hear some Miike Snow on the production shifts that separate the different chapters of the story told through sound. Even in the vocals and the treatment too. But there’s something very attractive and haunting about The Amplifetes’ sound. That recursive bassline from the starts lays a bed with a plethora of layers on top of it and below the subtly flangered vocals. And when you listen to it as a whole is that you understand why with every listen you discover a new element and the song grows and grows on you. The video has caused quite a commotion on Youtube, evidence is in the comments. It would be interesting to know your thoughts on the video and the song.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you to it. In the end, and no matter what anyone thinks, life is about you, me evolution and seizing today and the next.

Miike Snow – Paddling Out (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)

Plug in your headphones for this one folks ’cause the drop in this track is heavy and it’s deep. Swedish trio, Miike Snow continue to deliver fire tracks, but add in dance-pop maestro Jacques Lu Cont and you have a track that threatens to blow your speakers (really though, if you’re going to do that why not do it to this one)?

There’s someone here who laughs too hard at everything
You say isn’t it hard?
Paddling out, paddling out
Say you, isn’t it hard?
Paddling out, paddling out…”

Coming off the trio’s March 2012 release, Happy To You, “Paddling Out” is upbeat synth bliss. I picture two people working a banal job staring at a co-worker who’s constant pep is more irritating than anything. One is probably sitting on a desk, head above the cubical while the other mindlessly goes through their dismal to-do list all the while grunting as the co-worker du jour laughs loudly; perhaps walking by to flash a bright white smile, eyes beaming. The irritation, however, stems from envy. They wish they could be as energetic, but they can’t. The chorus doesn’t question the level of difficulty of being happy, but rather the boldness it takes to venture out into a territory where happiness may exist. It’s much easier to play the cynic than it is to play the joyful one.

Thankfully, Lu Cont opens the door for the cynics and provides chorus that sounds like zipping through a vortex into another realm. As the words “paddling out” repeat, they stretch into the sound-waves and drop down into a pulsating boom-boom-boom with spacey robot sounds screwing up and down the melody. It’s a trip worth diving into today. So send that group text message out now and get your friends over tonight because you have this track ready, and letting go sounds pre-t-t-y nice right about now after this deceivingly long week.

Venturing out and experiencing something new isn’t as hard as it seems. All it takes is a little push.

Here’s that push.

EMPT Presents – S U M M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2 d by Ryan Radler

For years when it came to EMPT I’ve been a one man band man. For those of you not familiar with the term coined by contemporary painter, producer, rapper Kasseem Dean aka Swizz Beatz, that basically means that from top to bottom I’ve running the show. Of course all credit due to Steph and the beloved LMDM series and Ryan Radler’s anti-winter/summer series, both which have become ultimate delineation of what Space Age Bachelor Pad Music is about, but when it came to running the show it all started and ended with yours truly. Recently however, things have changed and with my new fancy role as Creative Director there’s no way I would be able to keep this up. That’s where Mollie, the new EMPT operations boss comes in. If you’ve noticed the new increase in output lately she’s the reason why and compared to my sporadic post when I feel like it style of operation, it’s a welcome change. It’s great to see this site take on some new legs and run faster than it ever has and for that we’re all grateful. That said, looks like we’re ready to usher in a new era for EMPT and there are many reasons to be excited.

One of those reasons is the topic of todays conversation, S u m m e r : anti-winter 2d! Yet another inspired concoction of music from sir Ryan Radler. The tape starts off with with Keljet’s lights out remix of Coldplay’s UFO and then masterfully builds to an intermission provided by Quincy’s Summer In The City. I wish I was a better writer so I could tap into all my musical knowledge, experience traveling the world and living amongst different cultures so I could accurately express how wonderful it is when Ryan brings together these worlds, times and styles so effortlessly. Don’t get it twisted my friends, you can’t get this anywhere else. Music can be so many things, one day you might feel like Skrillex’s Kill Everybody because you love how aggressive, fast and exiting it makes life feel. Another day you’re bumping Hello Nasty or Doggy Style as loud as possible because it’s flat out fresh, that’s how you want to feel and…

Nothing sounds quite like an EIGHT-OH-EIGHT!” – Beastie Boys (Super Disco Breakin’)

The music Ryan puts together can be described as a lot of things but to me it’s mostly just beautiful. When I want to feel ethereal and put life in a the right perspective that’s where I’m going. Every one of these tapes has been nothing but good vibes and somehow this guy only gets better and better. Press play, kick back and you’ll see what I mean, enjoy.

Miike Snow – Paddling Out (Penguin Prison Remix)

I’ve been rocking with the new Miike Snow album but for some reason haven’t felt compelled to post anything. Then this morning Penguin Prison sent me their remix of Paddling Out and well that’s a different story. Penguin Prison brings the song about surfing to the dance floor with their beloved brand of disco-infused synth stabs, a pulsing bass line and a high energy arrangement made for movement. All I can think of while listening to this song is getting to the beach, gotta get there asap, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 2 a by Ryan Radler

Ethereal – extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world. Press play on Ryan Radlers latest mix tape and that’s exactly how the music will make you feel, immediately. The effect is no coincidence and if you’re hip to the anti-summer/anti-winter concepts then you know that’s what these tapes are all about…

At the end of the day I think the mixes are really about how to navigate each season. Personally, winter has been killing me and this mix is literally some catharsis to cope with the stuff that comes. Cold, depression, lethargic lack of motivation…

I love finding alternative perspective to seemingly crappy situations so Ryans and I see eye to eye on anti-lameness methods. Listening to this tape while reading that makes me think of all type of reality alteration; if you haven’t noticed by now I’m big into Steve Jobs and if you’ve read Walter Isaacson’s book you’ll know all about Steve’s reality distortion field. At it’s most fundamental level it was a complete neglect and disrespect for any know limits, boundaries and expectations. Dig a little deeper and it was Steves ultimate tool for creativity…

Reality is maleable, we should all know that but we don’t. There’s no such thing as the “real world,” the only thing that exists is what we decide to bring into fruition. That may seem far fetched but think about it, if you’re feeling down one day and you put on your favorite song to cheer you up and it works then you’re effectively changing your “reality.” That’s why the world, it’s art, it’s people, customs, morals and standard are constantly changing. The concept runs deep, I mean just think about the things you don’t do because of what you have come to accept as possible in your life.

In the case of a n t i – s u m m e r  2 a rebellion never sounded so good. Talk about reality distortion, this hazy dream of a mixtape make the world feel like heaven as it effortlessly jumps from genre to genre, decade to decade and known to unknown. There are mixtapes all over the place but you’d be hard pressed to find two as unique and inspiring as Steph’s and Ryans and I think I speak on behalf of the entire EMPT army when I say how thankful we are to have these great artist bless us with their selections. Alright, I have to go face this bitter sunshine filled LA winter, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3 c by Ryan Radler

Today is a bittersweet story as it is with both sadness and joy that I present to you the 2011 conclusion to Ryan Radlers wonderful mixtape series, anti-winter 3 c. Week after week Ryan has given summer luxurious and comprehensive soundtrack setting a unique vibe for all our estival activities – Dear anti-winter, we’ll miss you.

When I use to perform classical music under the tutelage of the the late great Dr. Walter Turnbull we learned that clapping in between movements or grand pauses is inappropriate. That always fascinated me because Dr. T was an incredible teacher and got us sing classics like Cantata 191 with mind blowing passion, I’ve personally never connected with music more then when I use to sing under him, and I’ve definitely never heard classical music sound anywhere close to that good. When we would finish the audience would instantly forget the etiquette and start clapping before they realized what they were doing. The point is that getting into clap mode takes you away from the piece and the experience the composer was trying to create. In the age of skip everything and immediate satisfaction music is rarely given the time to develop and seduce and I think we’re deprived because of it.

Anyways, though they have little in common, Ryans work made me think of those performances because his tapes have the same beautiful structure and movement. I highly recommend just pressing play and allow yourself to be entertained. Sure you could skip around but it’s just sooo much better to sit back and let it breath, develop, settle, build back up and take you on a journey. Anti-winter 3C is yet another fantastic effort and we’re delighted to bring it to you, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3B by Ryan Radler

I think releasing Ryans mixtapes on Monday’s has completely altered my perception of this previously dreaded day. I don’t know about you guys but everything in my life revolves around music, it’s my bread & butter, my hobby,  basically all of the above. I love it so there are no complaints, however I’m a fan of music before anything but since I’m always behind the scenes I rarely get to play that role. That’s why these mixtapes are such a treat for me. Once a week, I get to totally kick back and just enjoy someone else’s work on and vision and that’s mastercard priceless to me. By now you all know these tapes are predictably amazing so I don’t have to sell it to you, just Ryan Radler mixing up styles and genres like clockwork. That said, I’m gonna order some grub and chill out for the entirety of this tape before getting back to work, a much needed break. Enjoy.

Amadou And Mariam – Sabali (Miike Snow Remix)

Steph used the original version of Sabali waaaay back in the now infamous mai 2009 (The Lost Tape) installment of Le Miel du Mois. I remember not knowing what to think when I first heard the track but being completely captured by the emotion and vibe. The blind couple from Mali recently dropped a 13 song remix album featuring a pretty star studded lineup including Yusek, Akon, Bob Sinclair and the subject of today’s post Miike Snow.

You guys already know how I feel about Swedish artists and producers and Miike Snow is no exception. The remix is very much the Miike Snow sound you’ve come to love and expect. Whoever executive produced this album needs some credit for thinking of Miike Snow for Sabali because that sampled piano, heavy vocal processing sound is the perfect match for Sabali. I haven’t gotten around to checking out the other songs on the album yet but I’ll get on it this weekend. If the quality is at this level expect some more post in the coming days, enjoy.

Crookers feat. Miike Snow – Remedy (Magik Johnson Vocal Mix)

A week ago my hosting company called in saying that EMPT outgrew it’s server and did over 1 terabyte is traffic. They congratulated me and the readers for our music addictions but  told me that I owed them $10,000 in fees, right. They basically wanted to blame me for their accounting mistakes so yesterday, I didn’t wait around and removed myself from the hosting. Today EMPT is hosted on a bigger, badder, faster and better service – how you like me now f&*c@rs.

No we won’t back down from anything in search of a remedy…”

I really love that line and it pretty much sums up how I feel about a lot of things. Dealing with nonsense is pretty much inevitable but as we all know it’s how you handle it that counts. Sometimes it’s best to attack, sometimes it’s best to retreat but no matter what you have to be in pursuit of the solution. I woke up this morning feeling like I drank 5 cups of coffee and with all the drama in the NYC this Magik Johnson Vocal Mix couldn’t be more appropriate.
