Now this is how you do a remix. Bloc Party is coming back late August with a new album called Four and Octopus is their first single. The original has the band doing what they do best: a healthy mix of neo-punk and singer/songwriter poetics. Personally, it’s great to hear a band stick to their guns and not change their whole image with each album. Bloc Party has made a name for themselves with their sound, why fix something that’s not broken? Okay – perhaps that’s going out on a limb ’cause there’s definitely artists who’ve changed and I’m still loving their stuff but I’m sitting here trying to imagine them doing an arena rock album and I’m laughing out loud. I like Bloc Party for Bloc Party. Don’t change boys, you rule as you are.
BUT! If they were to ever experiment within the electronica realm, I’d be on board. RAC has given us a fantastic remix. It’s got a beat made for some twenty-something party. Kele Okereke’s voice isn’t altered from the original mix, but his falsetto combined with the pulsing beats during the verses is hypnotic. The production here is addicting. It’s got me unusually hyped for a Wednesday night. The guitar break at 2:21 builds for a solid 30 seconds with each layer of production getting added on as it jumps the octave finally dropping to the chorus leaving us – the listeners – to just let go and dance.
Mary Anna said it’s a no-go
She don’t feel like, she don’t think so.”
Mary Anna needs to loosen up in my opinion and do what RAC wants us to do with this remix. Bloc Party + minimal dance influence is A-OK in my book.
