Pretty Lights – Hot Like Sauce

This has to be one of my favorite tracks. It’s an oldie from Pretty Lights but such a goodie. I played a part in the masses of Electric Zoo Festival on Friday, primarily for the purpose of being a part of the Pretty Lights concert experience. Everything about it was perfect — the light show was exquisitely done, so well that I’d say they were the best I’d seen in a really long time. The DJ booth sat nestled in a backdrop of a customized skyline fairly representative of NYC, while projections of different cityscapes played on a large layered screen behind. While all of this happened, lazer-lights went out over the crowd kind of like this, endlessly dazzling the eyes of a raging crowd.

I turned to my best friends at the moment he entered the stage and all of us giggled with giddiness while I hoped that he would play Hot Like Sauce. Not only did he play my favorite track, but he played almost every other favorite track of mine. With such a vast collection of music under the belt of Pretty Lights, the choices were obviously endless for a live show such as Zoo. With an impeccable ear for sound and tunes that encourage positive body movement, Pretty Lights stole the entire show.

For those of you that already know this track, enjoy again. Maybe you haven’t heard it in sometime. For those who have never heard it, prepare for joyful joy.

Kevin Casey’s Sample Saturday – Etta James & William Bell et Pretty Lights

Categorizing the productions of Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, is a little complicated, as he tends to fuze hip hop style beats, often at dance music tempos, with buzzing synths, moving pads, and classic soul and funk samples.  I have to be honest, I embarrassingly didn’t even know about the Pretty Lights phenomenon until my homegirl Allie’s facebook status earlier this year when she said, “listening to my new obsession, Pretty Lights”.  Reading that led me to over an hour of youtube viewing, the whole time in awe of his live performances, pausing frequently to get clear glimpses of what he was rocking on stage.  Besides a drummer playing along to the tracks, Smith was all in the box, rocking out on two Macbook Pros, and riding the only wave suited for what he was accomplishing sonically, that wave being Ableton Live.

It’s great to see someone at the forefront of creativity in his field and really using what’s out there to push the boundaries of sound and performance.  Ableton software is called Live for a reason as it truly offers endless amounts of tools to take digital music performance to new heights every time you sit down to be creative.  This particular track blends together the familiar guitar riff of “Private Number” by Judy Clay and William Bell with the spectacular vocals of Etta James’ “Somethings Got a Hold On Me”.  This same Etta James sample is more popularly known recently for it’s use on Avicii’s “Levels”. Anyway, enough blogging, I think it’s time to call up Hector and get to work on some DJ ideas. Innovation inspires more innovation, this is a path us producers should all follow and who knows where we’ll end up.  Have a great Saturday guys.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars 2011

There’s never been a ni$%@ this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this  hot or this strong
With so many different flows, this ones for this song
The next one I’ll switch up – This one will get bit up
These fucks to lazy to make up shit
They crazy, they don’t paint pictures
They just trace me.” – Jay-Z

That verse is exactly how I would describe Steph’s LMDM series, especially after the bomb she delivers this month. March crept up on us thanks to the February’s short month trickery and on the 28th I got an email from Steph reading exactly as follows –

its march tomorrow…..!!!!?!??!?!

LMDM is usually a month long project and I have to admit I was a little worried when I heard it this time around it was going to happen in about 24 hours but like a true champ Steph stepped up and absolutely crushed it. By now you’ve probably figured out that you can’t figure this girl out, I mean Skeeter Davis into Star Slinger?! How does it work, how is each tape so different month after month and I tip my hat to yet another fantastic installment of LMDM…

What more can i say?
What more can i do?
I give this all to you…”
– Hovito (What More Can I Say)

A 1964 song opens this one. Another track I wanted to single out is Star Slinger’s remix of The Go! Team’s Apollo Throwdown and also the Diamond Messages track, which I fell in love with on the spot when EMPT posted it a few weeks ago. I found 3D Friends when we interviewed the SKINS 19 year old music supervisor from London, you can check out that interview here, and the closer to the mix, White Wishes is another one to check out (all of their material is available to download for free on their bandcamp page)- everything I listen to by them I love. Have fun in the March moments.

Kanye West – All Of The Lights (Pretty Lights Remix)

Don’t have much time before my meeting but I came across this remix on one of my new favorite websites so I thought I’d pass it along real quick…

Colorodo native Pretty Lights just released a bunch of remixes, among which is a dub step version of Kanye West’s hit single All Of Lights. The remix is easily one of Pretty Lights best and the epic nature of dup step fits the song passionate nature to perfection.

Turn up the lights in here baby, extra bright I want yall to hear this!

This remix should have been the theme for the superbowl because it exiting and larger than life which is exactly how I would describe the bowl. Watching that spectacle showed me just how much we like the big show here in the states. I mean say what you want to say about the Black Eyed Peas and their robotic music but that half time show was something else. The NFL continues to be one of my favorite organizations simply because of their dedication to constantly improving their product. Let’s hope that lockout is nothing but a negotiation tactic. Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Octobre 2010

Well it seems like the bigger this blog gets the more it becomes a target… The latest battle in the war between EMPT & The Industry is by far the most entertaining and while I can’t got into detail for legal reasons let’s just say I’ll be making some changes to the way music is played on this site to meet the establishment halfway, whatever. To all the creative people out there, don’t hold on to your ideas so tight that no one hears about it but make sure you have bulletproof protection cause greedy and lazy people will do whatever it takes to get a piece of your pie.

That said, listening to this months installment of Le Miel du Mois was a therapeutic experience. First of all, this tape is ridiculously good. I mean the way the music fits the mood of the city and the fall season right now is beyond words.

You crazy for this one Rick (Steph)! – Jay-Z (99 Problems)

Once again Steph drops a mixtape so unique in vibe and style that you have to immediately regard it as your favorite. I think the reason for that is how in tune they are with the general feeling of the times which is quite fresh and might I add not very easy to do. Alright, I’m actually going to go run this tape back for the 3rd time this morning. I can’t get enough, enjoy…

CMJ is the third week in October in New York City. forthebeat is putting on a show October 20th with Transparent and ABC News Amplified. EMPT will also be a part of the night, and we’re all really excited about our line-up. More details on that next week. This month’s mix includes new releases from some of my favorite new artists including Home Video, Kisses, Summer Camp and Wise Blood. Another special track on this mix is newcomers Aux Arc from Savannah, GA. Look out for their first EP later this year, tentatively titled “It’s Hard Swallowing A Novelty.”
