EMPT Presents — S U M M E R: a n t i – w i n t e r 1 e by Ryan Radler

artworks-000050754382-kn684i-t500x500

Whether we like it or not, a new month approaches like a long lost relative, familiar out of necessity but still foreign with the possibilities that it brings. August is one of my favorite months of the year, and in the summer, because it’s absent of annoying holidays and tedious celebrations that all really commemorate the same things. Not to be cynical or anything, I’m really not, it’s just that my brother is born in August, and Ramadan for the past couple of years has ended in August, which makes it a really spiritually happy month. It also makes the start of September feel like a new year, which puts me in a clear head space, prepared for the remaining months in 2013.

For this month, my musical selection and soundtrack to my everyday routine has been picky. More picky than usual, actually. I want something that speaks to the end of a beautiful nostalgic time, while simultaneously fueling my energetic brain for the ambitious future that lies ahead. Which is why I was pleased to hear this edition of Ryan Radler’s beloved mixtape series. I think something that we like to talk about, and something that I am always aware of, is the power of a well crafted, finely curated mix-tape. While we tend to love mix-tapes that tell a story, I have a vast appreciation for those that successfully transition in and out of songs in a way that matches the flux and wavelike movement of my moods. I think I listen to mix-tapes because I want the feeling of letting go and allowing something else to take hold of my emotions, while not consciously doing so.

What I love about this edition of S U M M E R is the nostalgia and innocence that strings each song together. The vocal samples are what inspire my feelings of nostalgia. Innocent, because the emotion that each selection of song brings is raw and unabashed. It’s telling me to forget about my troubles for an hour and do good by me.

I’m doing just that. Today, just do you. Every day, really. But especially today while you embark on this journey of a mix.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3d by Ryan Radler

I used to wanna rap like Jay-Z
Now I feel I could run laps around Jay-Z
Nas ain’t seen nothing this nasty
B.I.G. & Pac got it coming when I pass too
You got the mic, I ain’t the one you wanna pass to

My ni$*@s say my new shit past due
I paid dues, even got that shit tattooed
HiiiPoWeR on another plateau
I know you know we need a few plaques too…” – Ab Soul

I love those lyrics. That’s the confidence, belief and attitude one needs to make progress. You can never sit around looking at the throne as something that can’t be achieved. You work hard, create your own lane, challenge it and get what you demand from it – in order to be the best, you must challenge the best.

That 41st law mentality is what makes Ab Soul is one of my favorite rappers right now. Aside from being highly intelligent, he sounds driven, like he cares about being great, like he practices everyday and wants no one to question his ability as a rapper. That use to be the norm in Hip Hop, you couldn’t try to be rapper without being incredibly good at it. I’m not talking Mr. Brainwash good here, I’m talking Picasso great. You had to be amazing, you had to innovate, you had to have your own style, you had to be the real deal. In the age of “swag” rappers the playing field is different but it’s nice to know there are still people that still value mastery and perfection of their craft. So many people want recognition or success, few actually know what it really takes, even less are truly willing to do it.

So why all the talk about rap in during a Ryan Radler release? Well it’s simple, these tapes come with that same fire and artistic integrity to not just exist but stand out as something special and worth while. I love that energy more than anything in an artist, it’s seductive, irresistible and necessary. When are artist is in the zone and that energy translates to their work the observers mind opens up and respects it. That’s usually when people say – I don’t really like this type of music but this is cool. I haven’t heard a Ryan Radler tape that hasn’t done that to me and I love it. That said, press play on this one and feel the energy of someone working hard to be great. Immerse yourselves in the Ryan Radler zone, it will treat you right.

S U M M E R :  a n t i – w i n t e r   3 D

  2. MILES BONNY x B.LEWIS – Bottom To Top
  3. XXYYXX – Tied2U

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 1 d by Ryan Radler

Warm enough yet? I think so and apparently so does Ryan Radler who is back in full effect with one of EMPT’s most treasured possessions, the 2012 collectors dream – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r. Or the best warm weather mixtape you’ll hear anywhere

This is incredible compared to anything else out there, it looks like it’s from another planet! – Steve Jobs

That’s how the tape starts and I won’t be the one to disagree. I don’t say that because we’re presenting it but because the time, energy and emotion captured in it says so. While we’re on the subject of Apple…

One of the things we’ve really learnt over the last 20 years is that while people would often struggle to articulate why they like something – as consumers we are incredibly discerning, we sense where has been great care in the design, and when there is cynicism and greed. It’s one of the thing we’ve found really encouraging. – Johnathan Ivy

Translation – you can’t fake the funk. Weather it’s song selection, transitions, delightful quotes or the unexpected curve balls (THE TONY HATCH ORCHESTRA – Bedazzled?! Word) the care and effort Ryan puts in to these shows. It’s one thing to make a tape full of what everyone is listening to already but it’s another to offer something new, challenge peoples taste and enlighten them – This is incredible compared to anything else out there. I could seriously talk about this all day because it really is the best and it makes me very proud that EMPT is bringing it to you. I’ve said it before but I can’t stress it enough, let it play as it was intended. I know all you ADHD having fools like skimming through music but do yourself some justice, press play and take a ride, enjoy.

BROTHERTIGER – Lovers (Casa del Mirto Remix)
BEACH HOUSE – Equal Mind

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 2 a by Ryan Radler

Ethereal – extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world. Press play on Ryan Radlers latest mix tape and that’s exactly how the music will make you feel, immediately. The effect is no coincidence and if you’re hip to the anti-summer/anti-winter concepts then you know that’s what these tapes are all about…

At the end of the day I think the mixes are really about how to navigate each season. Personally, winter has been killing me and this mix is literally some catharsis to cope with the stuff that comes. Cold, depression, lethargic lack of motivation…

I love finding alternative perspective to seemingly crappy situations so Ryans and I see eye to eye on anti-lameness methods. Listening to this tape while reading that makes me think of all type of reality alteration; if you haven’t noticed by now I’m big into Steve Jobs and if you’ve read Walter Isaacson’s book you’ll know all about Steve’s reality distortion field. At it’s most fundamental level it was a complete neglect and disrespect for any know limits, boundaries and expectations. Dig a little deeper and it was Steves ultimate tool for creativity…

Reality is maleable, we should all know that but we don’t. There’s no such thing as the “real world,” the only thing that exists is what we decide to bring into fruition. That may seem far fetched but think about it, if you’re feeling down one day and you put on your favorite song to cheer you up and it works then you’re effectively changing your “reality.” That’s why the world, it’s art, it’s people, customs, morals and standard are constantly changing. The concept runs deep, I mean just think about the things you don’t do because of what you have come to accept as possible in your life.

In the case of a n t i – s u m m e r  2 a rebellion never sounded so good. Talk about reality distortion, this hazy dream of a mixtape make the world feel like heaven as it effortlessly jumps from genre to genre, decade to decade and known to unknown. There are mixtapes all over the place but you’d be hard pressed to find two as unique and inspiring as Steph’s and Ryans and I think I speak on behalf of the entire EMPT army when I say how thankful we are to have these great artist bless us with their selections. Alright, I have to go face this bitter sunshine filled LA winter, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 1 a by Ryan Radler

Ryan sent me this last weekend when it was actually snowing in the city. It was Halloween weekend and all of a sudden there was miserable snow everywhere threatening to ruin all the crazy festivities. I DJ’d at Elle that and then somehow ended up in a Brooklyn warehouse Halloween party till like 9 the next day so I didn’t get to post this when it was most appropriate. Either way, the snow might be gone but old man winter is only getting started and for that reason it’s my pleasure to welcome back Mr. Radler and his new cold busting mix tape – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r. This is we’ve heard from Ryan since the last epic series and it’s absolutely wonderful. It starts off with Bombay by Guicho for crying out loud, it that’s not an instant mood changer I don’t know what is.. After that it’s just feel good after feel good so if you’re feeling down about this cold or the fact that it’s Monday this was made for you.

I love it when I can depend on something or someone for quality. For example, you buy an Apple product because you know it’s going to be good, you go to the best restaurant because you can expect them to deliver, athletes get paid the big bucks to perform at the time when everyone expects them to.

I see God in the instruments and mechanisms that work reliably.” – Buckminster Fuller

I’ve only known Ryan for a short time but his musical offerings have become synonymous with a unique, high quality listening experience and I love it. Anyways, press play on this one and feel good ASAP! Here are some words from the curator himself, enjoy.

Soooooo, my month break is up. It’s now fucking cold here in LA. I just took a spin in the car around Downtown LA and previewed this new Winter mix with the windows down and the cold night air whistling across my face. I have to admit, I am definitely a Summer kind-of-guy. But, I believe our wonderful world is one of balance and I suppose our 4 seasons should never be taken for granted. The music I have collected for this mix reminds me of the time of year when we get the first freeze. In one 32 degreed moment the plants and trees cease growing and begin shedding their leaves and seeds, nuts and berries. Rejuvenation in the cycle of life depends on the ebb and flow of the seasonal balance. May this mix represent a step in the direction of that idea.

***This first Winter mix is dedicated specifically to the East Coast with respect to the people who have been unfortunately affected by the unexpected, early winter weather.
Hopefully you can get this up before the snow melts!

S U M M E R: a n t i – w i n t e r Collection by Ryan Radler

Oh sounds like a dream to me…”  – Destroyer

Last week marked the end of our anti-winter series but this week we thought it be a cool idea to look back at what ended up being 9 weeks of wonderful music thanks to Sr. Ryan Radler. A few months ago I saw a humbling comment on Facebook from this Ryan Radler dude asking us to check out his mixes. Most of our relationships happen this way so I did. Now I’m an aesthetically driven person, I love details, colors, beauty, symmetry, simplicity etc. Whether it’s a work of art or a girl with nice nails, I like to look at nice things so when I saw the cover for anti-winter 1a I was immediately drawn in. Then I listened to the tape and fell in love, I wrote Ryan back and the rest is history.

The tapes are a unique musical experience meant to both entertain and at times challenge your predispositions and expectations. As a music aficionado if someone makes me feel something new through song they’ve won me over and the anti-winter series did each and every time…

With each Summer Mix, I try and push my limits and boundaries to provide at least one track that either no one knows about or has never cared to know about. – RyanRadler.com

Looking at the collage up there makes you realize just what a fine collection this is and we’re honored to have helped bring it to your attention. Someone left a comment on our wall asking where all the anti-winter tapes went. They’re all here but in honor of the series and to make them easier to find here’s the entire collection and a link to each corresponding post. This is certainly not the last we’ll hear from Ryan so stay tuned in November for a a teaser of the upcoming W I N T E R series. In the meantime make sure to check out RyanRadler.com for perviously un-released content, inspiring art, thoughts and glimpses into one of EMPT’s favorite artists, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2 c by Ryan Radler

I was in complete denial about summer ending till I went to the Caribbean this weekend and felt that amazing Cabarete beach weather – yeah summer is over. I’ve been traveling a lot my whole life, there’s something about waking up in different countries within a matter of days that does it for me. I’ll never take that for granted and music has made it possible so cheers to that.

I woke up this morning still feeling like an islander but regaining my New York State of Mind and the first thing I did was put on the new anti-winter tape. The weather in NYC is fantastic, it’s in that perfect limbo between hot and cold, it feels like change and this new tape compliments that to perfection. The opening sequence here is wonderful, Trophy Wife to Poolside’s blissful cover of Harvest Moon and then Fleetwood Mac and on and on, all I could do was lay in bed with a smile. Ryan has a knack for blending traditionally unrelated beautiful music in a way you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else and I highly appreciate it.

We sparked a doobie at like 8 am on Sunday morning after our DJ set with the one of the executives behind the weekend long event. Long story short, he was telling us how his companies creative approach is to introduce people to art they’re not familiar with. He goes out of his way to fly in acts from around the world to give the Dominican audience something new and refreshing. I loved hearing that and listening to Ryans eclectic selection brings me right back to that moment. Life is full of endless possibilities, limitless offerings and  keeping an open mind to explore all of it makes ones experience that much richer. Anyways, press play in the latest installment of anti-winter, start your day off in style and expand those musical horizons, enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R N I G H T S: a n t i – d a y 1a by Ryan Radler

I’m a hundred miles and running right now so I have no choice but to make this a quick one.

Ryan sent me a brand spanking new mixtape over the weekend and talk about perfect timing! My BB won’t stop buzzing with emails, I have music to produce, restaurants to curate, DJ sets to finish and all in the before Friday when I fly out to DR to spin at a beach party. Life is going fast right now and I have no intention on slowing up. Anyways, Ryan says this is a pensive tape but for those of us in the fast lane it’s more like the perfect balance. Gotta run but here are the notes I was sent regarding this tape, pretty much says it all, enjoy.

For all those who live in the fast lane, the new Anti-day series

THE HARD SELL
Ok so this week, I was hoping we could drop my SUMMER NIGHTS MIX: anti-day 1a. It’s a departure from the norm and could be a nice way to “mix up” the feature/series. The theme is a little more pensive and dare I say even a bit sensitive? I would suggest a WARNING to only play this thing at night when the mood is right. It’s sort of like in the movie Gremlins but opposite I guess. LOL. And anyways- Space Age Bachelor Pads only really come alive at night right? Mine does! HAHAHA!
Below is a short anecdote about my own personal experience with the mix:
MOONLIGHT DRIVE
I recently took my girl out in my 1983 Gold Datsun 280zx (“Goldie”) for a moonlight drive all over the hills and valleys of Los Angeles. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate moment to kick on my SUMMER NIGHTS MIX 1A.
It was a very hot day in LA so we also had the luxury of an unusually warm evening. We drove up the 110 freeway from Downtown  to Pasadena and beyond, weaving in and out of side streets and neighborhoods unknown. The bright, white moon was low in the sky, drifting behind the tall palm tree silhouettes- sometimes disappearing behind a hill of pine trees- only to reappear across a valley of orange street lamps and blinking buildings.
Halfway through the mix I realized that my acceleration and turning were being less directed by me and more by the beats and melodies of the music. The mix completely took over the steering wheel just like in Knight Rider or Iron Eagle!

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2 b by Ryan Radler

So I’ve been stuck in the Dominican Republic since my gig on Saturday thanks to the ultra hyped junior hurricane Irene. The irony of being stuck in the Caribbean because of a hurricane in New York of all places is pretty funny but it’s beautiful down here so I’m not complaining. Saturday at Praia down here was sick, the ShaveUrLegz.com did it up with the promotion and the place was packed and bumpin’ all night. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, these guys are doing something fantastic for Dominican culture and I couldn’t feel more privileged be a part of it. There will be a lot more going on between us so stay tuned for the exciting future developments.

In case you didn’t notice, I didn’t get around to posting much this weekend, the island sun was calling me and I had no choice but to listen. However, the show much go on and today we have yet another exclusive release from the main man Ryan Radler. I’ve been partying nonstop since I got here and now I’m finally poolside in my hotel with this tape in the background and the vibe is sublime. As you can see from this website, I’m not into musical monogamy, I listen to EVERYTHING, including country and that’s one of the reasons I love these tapes so much. Ryan wonderfully balances the chilled out summer theme but is never restricted to any particular style of genre. For the musically promiscuous like myself a wonderful treat. Anyways, you guys already know this by now so I’m going to go continue enjoying DR, won’t be back for at least another two weeks so I have to make it last. Enjoy.

EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 3B by Ryan Radler

I think releasing Ryans mixtapes on Monday’s has completely altered my perception of this previously dreaded day. I don’t know about you guys but everything in my life revolves around music, it’s my bread & butter, my hobby,  basically all of the above. I love it so there are no complaints, however I’m a fan of music before anything but since I’m always behind the scenes I rarely get to play that role. That’s why these mixtapes are such a treat for me. Once a week, I get to totally kick back and just enjoy someone else’s work on and vision and that’s mastercard priceless to me. By now you all know these tapes are predictably amazing so I don’t have to sell it to you, just Ryan Radler mixing up styles and genres like clockwork. That said, I’m gonna order some grub and chill out for the entirety of this tape before getting back to work, a much needed break. Enjoy.
