Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre 2011

I’ve never been a big fan of looking back, sure it’s comforting to reminisce about the good old times…

Hey you know everybody’s talking about the “good old days”
Everybody! The good old days
Well, let’s talk about the good old days…” – Gladys Knight

But in my mind the past does more harm than good. If you think about the past so much you’re going to constantly be ignoring what’s happening to you right now. The past is good for one thing and one thing only – educating yourself, learning from your mistakes and those of others, otherwise it should be avoided like the plauge. Your current situation is a result of your past thinking and thus your future situation will be a result of your thinking right now! However, if you keep thinking the same sh*&tty thoughts because you can’t stop thinking about the past you’re going end up with the same result. It will happen over and over and again and you’ll just be wondering why but the past is why…

Life is like a treadmill ni*#@s running in place,
Getting no where fast, a whole year done passed…” – Jay-Z (It’s Like That)

Like I said, the value of the past is education, it’s the only way to break the pattern. Otherwise it already happened and if you really think about it, it doesn’t even exists anymore, it’s literally just in your head. My conductor, the late great Walter J. Turnbull always told us – “you’re only as good as your last show.” That always stuck and it means more to me now than ever. Think about your job, say you’ve put in years of service but if you start screwing up today it’s good bye. If you’re in a relationship, those first months or years we’re wonderful but if you stop showing love, caring to impress, to improve and always keeps things fresh things are bound to go sour…

You’re only as good as your last show” – Walter. J. Turnbull

So what does all of this have to do with LMDM? Well, if you’ve been following LMDM these years you’ll know that this ruthless forward thinking mentality is at the very nature of Steph’s mix tape series and listening to this special version inspired all these thoughts. For those unfamiliar with the series this is a great way to get to know it, here’s why

Instead of a “best of” 2011 artist and songs mix,  our end of the year mix is a compilation of the best of LMDM’s of 2011. I tried to chose one track from each month, of the past 11 LMDMs but that was tough and turned into two select tracks per month, because lets face it, 22 tracks is better than 11 and I wanted this holiday tape to be a BIG one. Every LMDM I listen back on reminds me of what I did that month and the little moments that made the month, and piled on, that made the year. …Here’s to Hec and EMPT moving to LA and to a bigger better faster stronger 2012.

That said, here’s to the future, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Aout 2011

Like the flowers needs the rain, like blind man needs his cain, I need you…

If you haven’t noticed mixtapes are a big deal around these parts but there’s none more significant than our beloved LMDM by Steph Lund. Month after month, no matter the weather, you can come here and find a new fresher than the last mixtape and for that we’re so thankful. I don’t know about you guys but my months don’t feel like they can’t start until I hear the tape and since music is a drug that means I’m pretty much addicted to LMDM. Actually, I know I’m not alone, I’ve seen some other addicts tweeting and commenting when the tape isn’t out in time…

Like the darkness needs the night and the moon glow needs the light, I need you…
Like a person needs his soul like the winter needs the cold, I need you…
Like the fire needs the air I won’t burn unless your there, I need you…” – Frankie Beverly & Maze – I Need You

Somehow Steph always manages to put it all in perspective with songs that make you sit down chill out and think and then immediately after another to make you get up and dance. I don’t let too many girls play with my emotions but when it comes to LMDM I’m daytime television baby. Alright, the day is young but there’s much to do so check out the new disclaimer and take a ride, enjoy.

There are many ways to listen to LMDM but I highly recommend you do as I do – press play, sit back and put your trust in Steph. A lot of thought was given to the sequence so no fast forwarding, no rewinding, no flipping, just listening…

Beirut’s Port of Call is my favorite track off of their new album, so I wanted to open the mix with it. I also included Air France’s new song, which after a bit of a hiatus, its exactly what I could have hoped for. Not everything is new which I think makes for a more interesting lmdm like the Santogold remix which means more to me in using it two years later than when it first came out. Andddd its August…”

EMPT: Greatest Hits 2009, Vol. 1

The Greatest EMPTNYC.com

So I was at the W Hotel last week celebrating the announcement of their new musical director Michaelangelo L’Acqua who also happened to be the DJ for the event and let’s talk about good music cause this guy was on fire. As the night went on it seemed like every single song this guy played had been posted on EMPT! As I sat there sipping on the usual cognac Michaelangelo’s fantastic taste inspired this new greatest hits series which will be posted once a week till the end of the year. We’ve been around for over a year now and to all the friends we’ve had since day one: we love you and to all the new friends we’ve made along the way: we love you too. Here are some of our biggest hits and their original posts.

With the new year on the horizon I couldn’t think of a better song to get this series started then The Black Lips – Starting Over. This song was my new years anthem last year and I’ve yet to find a worthy replacement. I find that we look at the past so much in relation with what we want in the future which keeps you stuck somewhere in the middle, which does a lot and a little. My new thing is emptyness, everyone from the past is getting that new person treatment and the future is just going to have to manifest itself through all the day to day actions without too much thought invested in what’s not visible.

I gotta keep running! I’m starting over…”

Black Lips – Starting Over

Lights Out is one of my favorite songs for one that one line in the hook that just hits me every single time:

Darling, you don’t have to worry your locked in tight.”

I feel like people have so much doubt in relationships and sometimes it can be justified but you can’t really build with doubt in the background so how do you get someone to lose those fears? Well first and foremost you have to show them that you’re sincere but sometimes saying it is important too. Somehow that line just sounds like the ultimate sign of respect and care – “You don’t have to worry your locked in tight.”

Santogold – Lights Out (Tepr Emo Remix)

Last but no least is the incredible cover of Lykke Li’s I’m Good, I’m Gone by the Friendly Fires.

I’m working a sweat, but it’s all good
I’m breaking my back but it’s all good
‘Cause i know i’ll get it back
Yeah, i know your hands will clap”

I spent my childhood traveling around the world as a member of the Boys Choir of Harlem so when I heard this line I had one of those moments when you just feel like someone relates to you in a nearly creepy way. Our conductor use to have these epic and draining rehearsals before concerts and I never really understood the point until I got more in touch with the audience during shows and felt the energy they gave back when we did well, to this day it’s one of the greatest feelings I’ve had. So what can I say, I’m a just and entertainer, I’ll work day and night to make sure you guys get the best possible experience when you come check out EMPT… “‘Cause I know I’ll get it back. Yeah, I know your hands will clap.”

Thanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world. But you’re here with me, I appreciate that.”
