Snoop Doggy Dogg – What’s My Name? (Hot 8 Brass Band Cover)

I landed in LA yesterday, got to the Standard had an amazing dinner at Comme Ca, woke up this morning to an inspiring view of LA, it’s safe to say I’m feeling a little California love here. Kev slacked on the Sample Saturday post this week so in honor of my return to Hollywood I’m posting a gem guaranteed to light up parties this summer. DJ’s you can thank us later…

Snoop Dog took over Hip Hop in ’93 with the release of Doggystyle, an album which is arguably one of the greatest party records of all time in any genre. The album was incredibly well produced by Dr. Dre who masterfully blended Snoops legendary style and flow –

It’s the bow to the wow, creepin and crawlin
Yiggy yes y’allin, Snoop Doggy Dogg in…”

with his own brand of G-Funk, live instruments, back up singers, random samples, banging bass and all sorts of eclectic goodness. This is Hip Hop at it’s finest so if you’re not hip to that album I highly recommend you check it out.

Tru Thoughts, one of the most famous and well respected indie record labels released a compilation to celebrate their 10th anniversary. One of the cuts on the album was a cover of Snoops first single from Doggy Style Who Am I (What’s My Name. I love horns so when I heard what New Orleans group The Hot 8 Brass Band did to this song I literally jumped up in excitement. This is straight up New Orleans flavor, it’s drunk, it’s loose, real, feels extremely good and brings an completely new life to the Hip Hop classic. All the Brookyln heads who BBQ on the rooftops this one is especially dedicated to you…

Why don’t you come up to the roof, smoke a couple of blunts, have a good time…”  – Workaholics

I know Mondays are supposed to be boring but the sunshine has me in full party mode and for that I can’t apologize my friends. Anyways, I’d love to stay and chat but I gotta go hit the town, enjoy.

The Twelfth Hour

The Twelves

Will someone please explain to me the phenomenon that is time while at work? Doesn’t it feel like right before you get to work time is flying and you can’t move fast enough but the second you sit down it’s like you go into some alternate world and it takes an hour for 5 minutes to pass. Work sucks huh? You know what, I really like the concept of that new Bruce Willis movie. We should have robots that represent us at work while we do important things like thinking of more ways to use robots and not do anything. That probably won’t happen today so I’ve got a little something to help you day dream and procrastinate more than you already do…

The Twelves released a new 60 minute mixtape two days ago and I think my friend Ben’s facebook message describes it best: “new 12s mixtape = predictable amazingness.”  This is the followup to their previous mixtape Episode II, which I never got around to posting but will in the next week or so.  I’ve been listening to this all morning and it rocks, there’s really nothing else to say.  These guys just get it when it comes to song selection and production. The transitions from song to song are seamless, the mash-ups and remixes are top notch and the overall flow and feel is energetic and entertaining all throughout.  it’s quite good.
