EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Summer 2014

Relax your mind, and folks unwind and be kind to a rhythm that you hardly find
And off we go, let the trumpets blow
Well hold on, because the driver of the mission is a pro,
The Ruler’s back…” – Slick Rick (The Ruler’s Back)

That’s right folksthe underground’s most eclectic, most uninhibited, most poetic, futuristic, most imitated, but never duplicated mixtape is back in action, and as expected from all tapes worthy of the name LMDMin grand fashion. We don’t release for the sake of releasing here, our intention is always to be the best, offer the best and be real at every minute in the process. So if you’re wondering why the hold-up, it’s because life has been happening and we weren’t just going to put something out we didn’t feel. As long time readers know: we don’t fake it here…

I live by the funk, I die by the funk…” – Notorious B.I.G. (Machine Gun Funk)

The last time I saw Steph she was at her wedding. We know each other and connected years ago because of music, and here I am at her weddingdamn. How does this mixtape start Steph – “So you come a long way, huh!?”

It was so inspiring to be around so much love and family. It was an honor to see her take that step, to be there amongst her most-cherished because she is certainly one of mine. On behalf of the EMPT army, congratulations!

I represent the Space Age where all institution is up for revamp, examination, and ready to be destroyed or challenged, but one thing that stays true is the importance of family. Sure, there are corny people that abuse love and family itself, but when a group of people understand the bond and importance of blood and use that as support, there is literally nothing stopping them. Believe me when I say this, the people who run the world are the tightest families you’ll never know of. The institution is being destroyed on purpose because a world without people who would die for one other is easily malleable, but we can’t let that get diluted or forget it’s value. So why was LMDM on hold? Because Steph was building a family, you basic bitches!

But we still love you all & here we are, back with LMDM Summer and like I said earlier: it’s heavenly.

As usual there’s 360 degrees of styles uniquely bound by Steph’s masterful mind. Everybody knows that no two LMDM‘s are the same, and this one is no exception, so don’t take the title for granted.

This is truly a summer-tape perfect for all your hot weather activities. I think Steph spent her honeymoon in Thailand and Cambodia or something amazing like that. Or as Steph put it…

Pure, calm and escaping love ❤️”

I can easily picture myself with my close ones bumping LMDM Summer while chilling in an infinity pool somewhere in the middle of a forest or some futuristic shit like that. As usual, I highly recommend pressing play and letting the tape rock till it stops. The adventure is beautiful, it’s custom-made for the Space Age kids, for you. Enjoy.

Relax your mind, let your conscience be free.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars 2014

I can’t waste any more time doing things I don’t want to do…” – La Grande Belleza

I haven’t seen that movie but that didn’t stop me from being taken by such profound words. Since the day you’re born, your parents have an idea of who they want you to be. Marketers know how they want you to think so you buy, bankers want you to spend so you’re in debt, politicians want to influence your beliefs to vote, lovers want  to see you in their own image and on and on. We come into this world trying to find ourselves in the face of such powerful external influences that you can’t help but wonder when you’re truly being yourself. You can waste a lifetime trying to find purpose in someone else’s story…

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.” – WarGames

Are you willing to disappoint, are you willing to be selfish, are you prepared to be an individual, perhaps even an outcast? It seems the path to the self is full of negative connotations but are you willing to do what it takes, are you willing to be Howard Roark to make your name?

For me it’s music. Some people call it an escape but to me it’s more like tuning in, it’s not fading away it’s more real than our commonly accepted reality…

You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” – Lennon

I’ve been listening to LMDM Mars while writing this and that’s what it makes me feel, it makes me want to make a greater effort to be me. It makes me want to be around people who are themselves, express themselves without inhibition and not in the childish loud phony way either.

And it took so long to be on my own, when the morning comes I hope your ready for it… – RAC

This version of LMDM moves like a seasoned marathon runner, pacing him/herself with masterful precision. Like a kid who read The Tortoise and The Hare and decided you could be both and win. LMDM break all the rules, follows no guidelines and sets no precedents. No two tapes have ever been the same and the adventure will be an evolving, ever-growing limitless form of expression that inspires me and so many to create in the same way. We’re going to be making a big push here, with some new things coming in the near future but today we’re saying thanks again to Steph for continuing to put together one of the most consistently dope and unique mixtapes out, we’re grateful to bring it to ya’ll, enjoy.

UPDATE: LMDM Mars is streaming live @  WynwoodRadio.com. Tune in quick fast.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Fevrier 2014

I know I know, it’s the middle of March and we’re just releasing LMDM Fevrier, we’re naughty bloggers but I promise these delays will stop! We have a great team of writers but I personally work on LMDM so if I don’t get around to it, it just doesn’t happen. On top of that my life for the last two years has been a high speed race man, I haven’t had much help so it’s taking a while to figure out how to be freakishly productive while maintaining some resemblance of a life.

As many of you know I went from being a producer & blogger to the Creative Director of The Playlist Generation and it’s been no walk in the park. From selecting the music that plays at all The Standards, PF Changs, Intermix stores, Baccarat to brag about a few, the kid barely has time for much else. Part of the reason why I haven’t handed off LMDM is because it’s one of the few times when I can turn off and escape from being the curator and dive into someone else’s world. Sure I could go listen to some name brand DJ mix the same tracks everybody and their grandma is playing in sets but I like that boutique, custom made, one of one high touch type shit. You know that Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, Steph Lund type shit.

Like all the beloved tapes that have come before it, LMDM Fevrier is an adventure. This one is particularly beautiful and romantic, strictly for the space age lovers. The tape speaks to selectivity which in this age of over saturated everything is more important than ever. It’s so interesting how Steph manages to tell such unique stories every time, I know I’m preaching to the choir but this shit is fresh, don’t sleep folks. I won’t even pretend like I can rationalize the selections but just know that all things are considered a blend of styles and genres only Steph can mastermind.

I’ve had this one since the end of February  but with SXSW and a ton of work I just haven’t gotten around to it. Besides that I wanted to make it using a new toy HP sent me a couple of months back, the ol’ Split X2. So yesteraday I went to a coffee shop, learned some new software and mixed the tape on a touchscreen, welcome to the space age. You know you’re doing something right when you get the cool young folks at corporations hitting you up about collaborations. Hopefully we can do more along these lines to build up this operation and offer you guys even more. Anyhow, press play on this beautiful thing and get that Monday feeling right, enjoy.

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Decembre Best of 2013

I can’t lie, I’ve had this tape since mid December. I did have an extremely busy end of the year and going back to NYC for two weeks didn’t exactly help my productivity but that really has nothing to do with it. In fact this tape has been complete since Steph first sent it over. HP sent us one of their new Split X2 laptops, you know the one Clams Casino has been using for those beat making videos you’ve been seeing all over the net. Anyways, I didn’t want to take my army of technology with me on this trip so I put Ableton on the X2, got inspired, took it on my flight and did all the mix on it while on my way to New York. Gotta love the space age.

The truth is I have this weird thing with LMDM’s where I want to hold on to it for myself for as long as possible. I realize EMPT is this whole thing now and people have certain expectations that need to be met but I like to do what I feel and being the only one with LMDM for a little extra longer makes me feel good, sue me. Seriously though, I know it’s a problem, I promise to be better about it this year. Anyhow, Steph usually speaks through her selections but this time she graced us with some beautiful words and I won’t go on with my ramblings and distract much longer. We took a little extra time to mix and blend the tracks while keeping Stephs original track order in tack so I think you’ll guys like how this one flows. To make up for my hoarding and to step it up for 2014 I’ll be mixing all LMDM’s like this from no on, enjoy.

Putting this lmdm is always particularly special – for me, each year it’s a way to go through the endless lists of my favorite songs which in a way is to go through moment after moment after moment that made up my year – to sum up “a best of” – this took me exactly twenty minutes, at a quarter to midnight, BC I knew exactly what needed to be on this – so this is my version of a best of – each song is a piece of my year and perhaps of yours as well…each track is much more than that – it’s a distinct memory you repeat in your head bringing you back to that individual experience you associate it with. For me there’s a strong mix of emotion attached to each one and a definitive event, person, or both. Here’s to a full year-  of ups and downs, highs and lows, falls and beautiful mistakes but with each close of a year – comes a new opportunity – of renewal and most importantly, an open path – waiting to be taken…

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Novembre 2013

I just watched Seeking a Friend for the End of the World while working on the November edition of LMDM and it really made me think about how we live our lives like we’re not going to die one day. If your days were numbered, which they actually are, would you have the same fears, what would you cherish and value, would you lose your inhibitions, your safety nets, would your culture matter, would you try all the things you keep thinking about, what would you do? It’s fascinating how the idea of living free sounds so radical but that’s what the social engineering does, it makes you stop when you should go. It makes people who speak out against the programming sound like they’ve lost their minds, are immature and don’t have a grasp on reality…

In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – Orwell

It makes fear comforting and fearlessness rebellion when it’s actually human nature. My life is challenging right now, not for any imaginary matrix created problem but because I’m trying to regain power over my creative nature and lose the programming that I’ve come to realize is trying to guide my actions…

Dear God, I wonder can you save me? Illuminati want my mind soul and my body.” – Jay-Z

Thank the moon and the stars for music man because sometimes art is the only place I can go to find truth. I say sometimes because there’s also a deliberate dumbing down of art and culture for the purpose of blurring the lines between trash and high quality but that’s another subject on its own. But that’s why in the age of excess the true currency is taste, selectiveness and honest sources. That my friends is why LMDM resonates. It’s not a tape that’s trying to accomplish a marketing goal, Steph isn’t trying to convince you of anything, we’re not trying to sell a damn thing…

Now before I finish, let me just say
I did not come here to show out, did not come here to impress you
Because to tell you the truth when I leave here I’m GONE!
And I don’t care what you think about me – but just remember
When it hits the fan brother, whether it’s next year, ten years
Twenty years from now, you’ll never be able to say
That these brothers lied to you JACK!”

At the end of the day EMPT & LMDM isn’t what we do, it’s what we love and I hope that we can continue to offer that distinction with absolutely no compromise. Long time LMDM listeners know the first song always makes a statement and Wolf Alice’s Blush is what got this whole post in motion –

Don’t chicken out it’s all good, you’re allowed to be what you could…”

That ethereal vibe, emotion and beauty is carried out throughout the entirety of Novembre 2013 which twist and turns from acoustic to electronic in the most interesting and futuristic way only Steph can pull off. You can really lock into this duality in the middle with the Romare track which is just incredible. Yet another work of art to add to this amazing collection. I know I’m all over the place today but that’s where my life is right now, I can’t see the limits of my own thinking and I don’t want to, I just want to express it and I don’t want to wait. Steph’s tapes always give me a platform because they’re so full of life and awesomeness, press play & enjoy.

Every LMDM is created from memories and experiences, so it should come across and feel like its an ongoing story… the last song to me always feels like it could be the first..because like all of our world’s – its about that ongoing, ever-changing, up and down, but above all, amazing, path …”

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Octobre 2013 (Mini-Mix Series)

As we proceed, to give you what you need…”

Time flies when you’re having fun man. Lately I’ve taken to myself, embraced being alone and finding my zone, it’s a beautiful thing. That’s where I was when I started EMPT, met Steph and built the ground work for all that is my life today. I run with a lot of creative people, not just creative in the sense of painting a picture but people that lead creative alternative lifestyles, rebels who create their worlds. Whenever I lock into my zone they’re right there with me and we make something from nothing. We do it effortlessly and have much fun…

Lookin back I did the shit to death
I guess I ain’t killin it this rhyme, I’m here to raise the dead
I’m here to raise the stakes, this time it’s ten mill
Supply the sink ill, ship five and then build…” – Fat Joe

We’re about to partner up with a radio station in Miami to stream LMDM and DJ at Art Basel and I was looking back at all the tapes we’ve done so far and I gotta tip my hat to Steph and say thank you. You’ve been at this for so long, you saw something in EMPT before it was anything and have been riding with me since. It’s been an exciting ride and we continue to do great but it’s definitely time to get back and beyond what we were before I left New York. EMPT is my DNA and I know it’s growth falls on me and no one else, I’ve tried getting help with no real success but I’m back in my zone and as happy as I am with what we’ve done, I’m not the type of guy to rest on his laurels…

Overly focused it’s far from the time to rest now…” – Drake

So just like that we’re on the 4th and final tape of the awesome mini-mix edition of LMDM. It’s a bittersweet symphony to be honest, I could get use to having Steph pick my music everyday! This tape like the 3 before it is phenomenal and brings us up to date on the internets longest running, most consistent, most eclectic, best curated, most loved mixtape. I’m the luckiest guy on earth to have Steph grace us with her music, I’ve said it before and I’ll never stop, enjoy.

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Septembre 2013 (Mini-Mix Series)

First off all, this mini-mix is amazing. As usual Steph’s selections are fantastic but the story told and vibe really take it over the top, DON’T SLEEP people! Ok, on to todays thoughts…

Can we get much higher?”

They say never forget where you came from so every now and then when I realize how far I’ve come I try to relive those olden days. Lately though, that exercise is becoming more and more challenging because I’m starting to think that phrases like “never forget where you came from” are one of the many social mechanisms designed to uphold the trap and create limits. I read a post on Cyrus Pavel that sums it up quite nicely…

Everything we know, we are taught.  Everything we “believe” has been curated into our ideologies.  But what about those things that exist out there which we still have no idea of?  Unearthed elements to the periodic table, technologies that will wire our brains to manipulate our own bodies in order to take flight.

When people are electrocuted and thrown far distances, it is the result of sudden and very violent muscle contractions and not the result of the shock, which means that we have the ability within us to do much more with our bodies than we have been taught.  “Taught” being the key word.

You might think that if we wanted to be immortal, we could, but we don’t know how to do so yet.  One might say that love isn’t supposed to be forever, yet we don’t know what kind of life exists after death, so maybe, just maybe, love is the only thing that does continue on.

But, we have a lot to think about, both you and I, because if things are that easy then we truly have not really evolved much as a species.  In the interim, machines are rising like a sci-fi flick at exponential rates, and we’re still asking ourselves the same questions that Socrates and Plato did…

The LMDM Septembre Mini-Mix starts with Wise Blood’s Alarm, which just explains it all right now…

I can’t think, with someone sitting right in from of me. I need my personal space…

Constantly in front of all of us culture, television, music, screens, the matrix. Don’t accept conventional wisdom and protect mind. Like I said, the zone this tape captures is fantastic. It’s thoughtful, chill and banging at the same time. The best art captures the full spectrum, Stephs art does that effortlessly. The whole mini-mix series so far is knocking my socks off, enjoy.

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Aout 2013 (Mini-Mix Series)

I forget how much magic is in LMDM. When we first started these tapes the first of the month always had a way of putting things in perspective and pushing the momentum.

And everything is on profit, and anything is an option…” -FRXXMASONS

That’s how I’m feeling going into the second day of our 4 day LMDM Mini-Mix release. Money is basic, it’s literally fake and has no meaning whatsoever so when I speak about profit let’s be clear, it’s a metaphor for all you basic bitches out there. Ask yourself, what are you getting for the amount of time you put into something? Though basic, analyzing such a thing isn’t so easy because fear leads us into relationships, jobs and situations that hurt us more than they help and the truth gets blurred in the process. Instead of embracing the flow of life we fight it and what should be a rewarding learning experience or opportunity for growth becomes a loss. The truth is everything has an upside and armed with the correct mindset, creativity and resourcefulness everything truly is on profit.

That’s the vibe I get from the LMDM Aout Mini-Mix, everything is on the up. EMPT was born from that energy and that’s what’s going to keep us ahead in the Space Age. I was just reminiscing with CP’13 about Noctambule and all the great things that happened so early in this sites life. It was all organic, all manifesting out of pure energy, love and excitement. When that’s there you don’t really have to try hard. Energy is more powerful than anything, vibe and true substance can do more than a marketing plan that’s why it’s better to be true and do things

With way less effort,
‘Cause when you try hard, That’s when you die hard…” – Kanye West

We’ve tried many things in the last couple of years and I can’t say it’s all been successful but it’s time to cut the losses and get back to that energy. Few things speak the true nature of EMPT like LMDM so it’s great and I love what this Mini-Mix series is doing reignite that fire, enjoy.

Tracklisting:

  1. Is Tropical – Dancing Anymore
  2. Oh Sailor – Mr. Little Jeans (Strange Talk Remix)
  3. Chrome Sparks – Marijuana
  4. Haim – Falling (Duke Dumont Remix)
  5. Kali Uchis – What They Say

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Julliet 2013 (Mini-Mix Series)

Damn, it’s been a while since we released LMDM… So much has happened – Steph got engaged, is constantly on the move, I’ve been 100 miles and running at The Playlist Generation and life has generally been on full throttle but we wouldn’t want it any other way. To say the least, balancing art and business is no walk in the park and we can’t fake the funk so if it doesn’t happen organically we’d rather not do it at all. We don’t do this for money…

I live for the funk, I die for the funk…” – Notorious B.I.G.

So apologies for recent months but Steph had a great idea to get us back in the game that will make it all better. Each day for the next 4 days we’ll be releasing an LMDM mini-mix to add a little funk to your brain. We’ll start at July and make our way to the present. Now that’s how you return to the scene but…

Don’t call it a comeback, I been here for years!” – LL Cool J

Damn right, this is not our first rodeo and the internets most beloved is years in the game now. It blows my mind whenever I think about it.

As many of you know, Steph curates LMDM top to bottom with each song being a chapter in the long form narrative that is our beloved mix tape. This time around the stories are just as compelling yet in a shorter form which is completely reflective of our current lifestyles. When you’re on the verge of so much change it’s hard to lock into one vibe. You’re inspired and you want to take in the whole world because so many forms of expression connect with you. That’s what it means to love something, to want every single inch of it. Listening to the kaleidoscope of genres, styles and emotions covered in these tapes show us not only how much Steph loves music but also how much she keeps things moving.

Treat it like boxing, stick and move, stick and move…” – Biggie

Art imitates life and right now these little LMDM blast make a lot of sense to me because exploring, absorbing and keeping on is just what the doctor ordered. I have an unfair advantage since I’ve heard them all but this series is awesome and I think all the LMDM loyals will have a great time listening. So without further ado here is the Julliet 2013 Mini-Mix to keep things off. Next one drops tomorrow, enjoy.

Tracklisting:

  1. Foals – Bad Habit (Alex Metric Remix)
  2. Fryars – Cool Like Me
  3. Haim – Don’t Save Me
  4. Vadoinmessico – Cave
  5. London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years  (Kids of The Apocalypse Remix)
  6. The National – This Is The Last Time

Steph Lund: Ruckus Rhythms Interview

We’ve come a long long way together, through the hard times and the good. I have celebrate you baby, I have to praise you like I should….”

Reading Stephs feature on Ruckus Rhythms nearly brought a tear in my eye man. I’m so proud of everyone that helps make EMPT happen these days but no one has been with me longer than Steph, that’s the bottom line. We have a loyalty to the music that’s beyond any regular affection most people have and that’s a beautiful thing, not many understand that but we do and that’s why she’s my twin. I’m so proud of what LMDM has become, Steph and how it continues to inspire others. Who wouldn’t have thought right Steph? Enjoy.
____

Steph Lund regularly contributes to the NYC based music blog Et Musique Pour Tous (EMPT). Her contribution isn’t in the form of a daily post, but instead a monthly playlist called: “Le Miel Du Mois” She is my music aficionado idol and yet I know nothing about her. This interview is meant to shed some light on the mystery that is Steph Lund and of course give us a very special guest Playlust (found at the bottom).

Your “Le Miel Du Mois” inspired me to create the P L A Y L U S T. How long have you been putting that together for EMPT?

Steph: That’s awesome. I’ve been honored to be able to create Le Miel Du Mois since April 2009- that was our first mixtape and still one of my favorites. I opened it with a Whitest Boy Alive track – Erlund Oye, I mean he’s a Lund…:)

How did that come to be?

Steph: I met the founder of Et Musique Pour Tous, Hector, through a mutual friend. We were at a concert a few months into our friendship and I ran the idea by him – At the time, I felt like it was something music blogs were lacking – a monthly curated playlist that focused on up-and-coming artists and remixes.

Do you DJ at all?

Steph: I do, but only with EMPT’s Hector – I haven’t put time into it as I should so I’ll only trust him to be there next to me. We do select parties in NY and LA if we feel passionate/ excited about them – Hec is amazing- he has played some incredible places – I’m envious where he’s traveled to for it

What are the top three ways you find music?

Steph: HYPE MACHINE, first and foremost. Spotify – listening to others playlists (Nicolaas Jaar,Pitchfork, etc) and artist and remix submissions to forthbeat’s twitter account– I usually can tell if I’m into something ten seconds in, and if I’m in love, about thirty seconds in

What’s one song you’re playing on loop right now and are seriously risking burning out on?

Steph: So many! I have a repeat problem- and not just with songs – current rEpEaT PrObLeMs are:

Foals – “Bad Habit” (Alex Metric remix)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Under the Earth” (my wake up track)

Hermitude- “HyperParadise” (Flume Remix)

and Angel Haze – “Werkin Girl”

This summer has been St Lucia – “All Eyes On You” for wayy wayyy too long (still is…)

Can you tell us more about your own music blog, forthebeat.com, and what made you want to start it?

Steph: So forthebeat was started as a placeholder- it sounds a bit odd but my friend and I who started forthebeat wanted to throw parties with bands we loved through shows we curated – the idea was to have these parties once every 4 months.

When we started reaching out to managers, we wanted a page to refer them to so they could have a reference for who we are. Then ABC News Amplified partnered with us for our CMJ shows and we started using the blog to post info on our parties and it grew from there. We did one of the first New York shows for Sleigh Bells – that was amazing to be a part of. We also worked with We Have Band,KissesHooray for EarthDominant LegsWisebloodPhantogram, and more. (Some photos here from those shows)

I’m the only one that posts on it anymore, and its not a pressure-do it every day or even every month thing – I do wish I had more time to post though. Maybe after the summer.

What do you do for a living?
Steph: I run a public relations firm – I head the Brooklyn office for a London based agency.

If you could tell our readers about one band they have to see live the next time they come to town, who would it be?

Steph: See Foals. See Beirut. See Solange. All have been hugely impresssionistic shows.

Can you tell us an anecdote of the most memorable time that you made a Ruckus?

Steph: I would say the entire year of 2009, which is when we started forthebeat. We were VPs at our jobs by day and running around to shows and parties every night. Can’t beat NY for that…
