STRFKR – Beach Monster

strfkr

Allow me to paint today’s scene outside my window for you. The sun is out, the sky is clear, and I can hear groups of people pass by beaming in the newfound warmth. It’s a kind of day that feels fresh, feels new, and — dare I say, limitless. To be honest, I’m not much of a sunny weather kind of guy; 60 degrees, overcast, and a little drizzle is my idea of a perfect day (the diffused light is a photographer’s best friend). Today, however, the weather is giving me life! It’s the kind of day to be lazy in the most active way — procrastinate your to-do’s and explore, find something new. I’d highly suggest you bring this track with you.

There isn’t much more to say about STRFKR’s track other than that it’s sonic bliss — saying anything more would be a buzzkill. It slinks its way out of your speakers in a hazy hypnotic psychedelic blend of island chill and East Village swag. The best thing for you to do is put on your headphones, lace up your Chucks, press play on this baby, and float through the streets. For those of you who drive everywhere, it should go with out saying that you’re practically obligated to coast down the highways with the windows down and this track turned way up. It’s also a solid track to dance alone to in your bedroom, but that’s just my prerogative.

Starfucker – Death as a Fetish

Starfucker (the artist formerly known as Pryamiddd & as STRFKR – for those who prefer ear muffs) officially released their album today, Reptiles. Representing the city of Portland, Starfucker have produced a few notable tracks on the newest album release with Julius, Astoria and Bury Us Alive but the track with the rather dismal title, Death as a Fetish, happen to catch my attention the most. Ironically, the track  happens to have an upbeat feel which makes you want to rock side to side, break out air drums, and blast the tune as loud as possible:

I’ll never be good enough, quietly.

No, I’ll never be good enough, just like me.”

Starfucker has something to say when you listen to their lyrics throughout the album, especially in regards to the subject of death. As it may sound grim, they actually send a message of not fearing the inevitable and embrace the life you live. The band thrives the most with songs which have a fast tempo as the rest of the tracks on Reptiles are hit or miss. However, Death as a Fetish resonates their sound to a new level and their similar tracks make the listening worth your while.

STRFKR – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper Cover)

There’s not much to say about these guys, they’re from Portland, Oregon and they make extremely feel good infectious indie-pop. They blew up after a local ad agency used their song Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second for a Target commercial and it’s been uphill since. The song was recently used by White Panda in a mash-up of Dr. Dre’s The Next Episode if you were wondering where that was from. STRFKR’s latest effort is impressive as they’ve made one of pop’s biggest girl anthems sound straight out of the underground. I like songs that tell the truth and as simple as Cyndie’s songs may seem that’s exactly what they do. For any guys that can’t figure out why their girlfriends are mad at them listen to the lyrics in this song, apply it to your situation and you’ll probably end up with a pretty accurate answer, try it…

I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.” – Morpheus

Any song that touches on the concept of independence and free spirit is very dear to me. In this song Cyndie talks about her parents putting pressure on her and about being in relationships with guys that try to keep her away from the world. Respecting peoples time, their space and freedom to live how they want is something we should all be aware of.

One life to live notice you get no sequel, so I truly got to live this like my last movie…” Jay-Z (Hola’ Hovit0)

Anyways, these guys have a great sound, their consistency never ceases to impress and they get one of the tightest and cleanest guitar sounds I’ve heard in a while, enjoy.

I want to be the one to walk in the sun…
