Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Septembre 2012

A person named Hadders (if thats your real name) left this comment on our wall last week and it said…

Hi EMPT, I’ve been following EMPT for the last 2 years and my welfare depends deeply on your LMdM mixes. They’re unbelievable. Can’t wait for the next one and thanks for the music…”

That made my day and it got me going enough to wake up this morning and finally put together the September 2012 edition of LMDM and unbelievable would be the best way to describe it. As usual, Steph manages to make an amazing tape that is a complete 360 degree turn from the last –

Well, tell me then which of these various styles you think is the best then huh?
The best I hear is the combined, the best of all styles. Put them together.”

I forget what movie I got that from but it’s the best way to try describe Stephs style – a constantly evolving blend of everything great music has to off.  I love that. If you take a look at the world around us, it seems like everyone is trying so hard to be something, to be classified, defined and identified. There are benefits to that and it certainly is comfortable and makes thing easy to understand but my problem with such thinking is that the second you become so defined you’ve instantly limited your experience. I’m not just talking about music here, it applies to all facets of life and can lead to severe lameness if not carefully observed. You ever meet someone who has it all figured out? It’s boring. The only thing constant is change and that scares a lot people but it’s a beautiful thing, the world keeps moving, everything grows and develops and in my mind that’s something to embrace. That’s the vibe LMDM gives me because I never know what to expect. Each tape continues to seduce and keep me on the edge and it’s wonderful. So Hadder (if thats your real name), I’ll join you in thanking Steph for this great experience. From start to end, month after month it truly is unbelievable, enjoy.

12 tracks for September. With one bonus. A month that rolls from one season to the next, September leaves us desperate to keep the sun but the season will change no matter how bad we might not want it to. heres to celebrating what was and whats to come… “

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels (Virgin Magnetic Material Remix)

I may not have grown up when Tears for Fears was big, but I did enter a new chapter of life with this track. I forget the exact age I was when I first saw Donnie Darko, but it was this track that stood out and clung to me when the movie was over (if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know that so much more sticks with you but I won’t get into it). The track accompanies a pivotal scene in the movie where the audience gets a glimpse into the relations and public personas of the film’s key characters. We see Donnie exit a school bus through the back as the camera pans through the school’s hall. Inside, the “tough guy” characters and “pretty girl” archetypes are easily noticed while the cynical nature of Drew Barrymore’s english teacher persona is clear, even. It’s a scene that acts as a platform for the rest of the movie and this track is completely appropriate for it. Themes of missed opportunities and time either passing or progressing (which ever way you look at it) are poingent to both the movie scene and this track in particular.

Tel Aviv music artist, Shai Vardi of Virgin Magnetic Material approaches this track in a manner that – depending on how you look at it – is either progressive or retro. He takes a classic track from 1985 and spins it over a 2012 nu-disco production. It is still very much a Tears for Fears track only made for the present times. Yet the present times sounds like a muted mellow disco track from the 70’s. The original bass line is amplified to a level that you can feel through your bones. I applaud Vardi on keeping the original introduction melody. Although it’s toned down, it’s really what sets this track apart from the original. Synths and starry chimes fill in the voids created with Vardi removing the dated 80’s productions. Despite my familiarity with the track, I can listen to this with fresh ears and know what era it came from and still appreciate how relevant it is over a modern-day beat.

Funny how time flies.”

Normally I’m not drawn to tracks like this; they’re never something I think of playing. When they do come on, however, it’s like a sweet hello from a time passed. The vision of the Virgin Magnetic Material version is a different story; a new life for the track. I have a gut feeling that this will be a go to get-up-and-move track. No use in wasting time, right?

EMPT Presents – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r 1 a by Ryan Radler

Ryan sent me this last weekend when it was actually snowing in the city. It was Halloween weekend and all of a sudden there was miserable snow everywhere threatening to ruin all the crazy festivities. I DJ’d at Elle that and then somehow ended up in a Brooklyn warehouse Halloween party till like 9 the next day so I didn’t get to post this when it was most appropriate. Either way, the snow might be gone but old man winter is only getting started and for that reason it’s my pleasure to welcome back Mr. Radler and his new cold busting mix tape – W I N T E R : a n t i – s u m m e r. This is we’ve heard from Ryan since the last epic series and it’s absolutely wonderful. It starts off with Bombay by Guicho for crying out loud, it that’s not an instant mood changer I don’t know what is.. After that it’s just feel good after feel good so if you’re feeling down about this cold or the fact that it’s Monday this was made for you.

I love it when I can depend on something or someone for quality. For example, you buy an Apple product because you know it’s going to be good, you go to the best restaurant because you can expect them to deliver, athletes get paid the big bucks to perform at the time when everyone expects them to.

I see God in the instruments and mechanisms that work reliably.” – Buckminster Fuller

I’ve only known Ryan for a short time but his musical offerings have become synonymous with a unique, high quality listening experience and I love it. Anyways, press play on this one and feel good ASAP! Here are some words from the curator himself, enjoy.

Soooooo, my month break is up. It’s now fucking cold here in LA. I just took a spin in the car around Downtown LA and previewed this new Winter mix with the windows down and the cold night air whistling across my face. I have to admit, I am definitely a Summer kind-of-guy. But, I believe our wonderful world is one of balance and I suppose our 4 seasons should never be taken for granted. The music I have collected for this mix reminds me of the time of year when we get the first freeze. In one 32 degreed moment the plants and trees cease growing and begin shedding their leaves and seeds, nuts and berries. Rejuvenation in the cycle of life depends on the ebb and flow of the seasonal balance. May this mix represent a step in the direction of that idea.

***This first Winter mix is dedicated specifically to the East Coast with respect to the people who have been unfortunately affected by the unexpected, early winter weather.
Hopefully you can get this up before the snow melts!
