Exclusive Interview: Chairlift

We recently got the chance to chat with Caroline Polachek of Chairlift about the band’s upcoming album in 2011, its inspiration, and some advice to up-and-comings.  Full interview below and a special remix Caroline gave us that Chairlift did for Brooklyn based Telepathe that is awesome:

How is the recording of your new album going?

It’s intense. We’re really excited about the flavor that the new songs all have in common. I can’t quite describe it yet, but they’re more overt yet more mysterious at the same time.

What was behind the decision in choosing London as the location to record?

It’s a secret!

Can you share anything specific about your new album? i.e. title, any song titles, theme, etc.

There’s a song from the point of view of two cannibals in love.

What city has been most inspiring in influencing your next album?

Since we’re on the move and don’t get to stay in one place for very long, “the city” becomes an amalgamation of all the places recently visited. Sort of a dream, where features of different acquaintances get smushed together to be dream-person, that you kinda know and you kind of don’t. So i suppose that feeling of shifting pieces comes through on the record, of transience, of being a ghost passing through.

What’s a small piece of advice you would give to bands starting out that you wish you had?

Learn to record yourselves, and make your own music videos.

Your fashion style is iconic. What do you attribute your inspiration to?

I like the idea of dressing functionally- getting geared up for an imaginary event. Even if it’s just to go to the corner store, i like to dress for where i wish i was going. Sometimes that’s enough to make it happen.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre

That’s right fool, it’s December 1st and that means a new version of your favorite mixtape maker’s favorite mixtape: Steph Lund’s Le Miel du Mois: Decembre edition. I haven’t told Steph yet but she’s outdone herself yet again. There are so many different spices, seasonings and flavors in this that I think Raekwon is going to have to share the Chef nickname with someone from the new generation, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Decembre

Le Miel du Mois: Decembre features some of my favorite artists, some I have loved a long time (Bloc Party, Sebastien Tellier, Phoenix) and some new favorites (Telepathe, Delorean, Neon Indian). Four artists featured are French, in anticipation for my trip to Paris this month, enjoy and ecoutez: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sebastien Tellier, Phoenix and Soko. Soko is a French model/actress. I included her song “I’ll Kill Her” which first debuted in 2007, but came back in my life recently when listening to DJ AM’s “Elton John Part 3,” I can’t stop listening to it and wanted to include it on this month’s mix, because, well the lyrics are just kind of amazing: s’amuser.”

Telepathe – So Fine

“The future for us is about making many more records and not getting attached to any certain process of music making. We always want a good challenge. We never want to be locked into any certain genre or whatever.”

Similar to Bat For Lashes’ Daniel, Telepathe’s So Fine is the more accessible single from an album full of experimentation and avant-garde weirdness. This song, along with a few others on Telepathe’s new album Dance Mother, was produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek and his influence could be more prevalent.  Haunting synths, dark landscapes and supreme creativity all while providing the essential bang bang element. Great video and great track from one of our favorite Brooklyn crews, enjoy.
