BlakRoc – What You Do To Me (Feat. Billy Danze, Nikki Wray, and Jim Jones)

Just some bad ass blues rock for no cot damn reason. Jim Jones, The Black Keys, Billy Danze (M.O.P.) & Nikki Wray, I mean…

This type of shit it (doesn’t) happen everyday.” – De La Soul (Ego Trippin’)

Dame Dash was on to something and had it not been for bad politics a lot more great music like this may have made its way to the airwaves. That’s why as fake and lame as it is to play the game, you always have to remember that in life we’re dealing with egos left and right. Not only those of others but also our own. Often times we can be our own worst enemies and so learning when to hold strong is equally as important as knowing when to fall back. A good team mate knows his role and a good team knows it’s goal, everything in between is usually egos at play and counterproductive to the objective. As we journey to accomplish great things in our efforts to contribute to the human experience, it’s important to realize that to create something worthy of the world we must step outside of ourselves at all times during that process.

Anyways, as I sit in my office playing this much louder than anyone around me would like I can’t help but think of New York. I mean this track is gushing NYC. Raw, dirty, edgy, soulful and resilient. Anything is possible in NY man, I love that energy. Like every other kid I use to hop the train growing up to save a few bucks for snacks at school, that’s one memory. Another is me and Cyrus riding around Manhattan in a Maybach club hoppin’ and having the time of our lives. I love that, I really do.

I’ve been on a constant come up since I was aware of it, hustlers spirit within me I’m never quite satisfied or comfortable. Innovating, being artful and creative to survive becomes engrained in you.

All I see is new to me…”

You seek that spirit in those around you, it’s a beautiful thing. Anyways, play this shit, get hyped, much to do.

The Knife – Got 2 Let U

I’m constantly faced with the question of what my favorite track of all time is. Sometimes the question is framed differently, perhaps pertaining to what my favorite electronica track is, or new indie artist. The question is often met with uncertainty and fear on my behalf, because there are so many that I don’t want to discredit and so many that I don’t want to forget. Consistently though, I’ve turned to a few artists. The Knife, The Weeknd, Little Dragon, The Black Keys, Radiohead…these are all staples in my musical diet. And this track, is exactly the answer to most questions that I encounter about music. Almost all musical questions directed at me can be directed towards this band and this track in particular. It’s perhaps one of the few tracks that I’ve discussed at great length with others where the reactions are very similar across the board. It’s usually a street reaction, one where the eyes are closed and the head is bobbing in tune with the beat. Sometimes you feel as though you’re invincible, like no matter what people think of you at that moment, you are so much cooler than them.

I’m always thinking about what I would say to The Knife if I met them. I really don’t know what I would say. I would probably hope that I could carry a sane conversation. One that covers many different levels, but mostly hoping that they have a lot to say about human emotions. Their music, while revolutionary in sound and movement, is extremely emotional for me and I’m so curious to know where it comes from. What channels of their brains direct that sort of innovation.

If you’re not immediately lured in by the in your face bass right from the start, then you’ll definitely be attracted to the sneaky introductions of new instrumentation as the song progresses. The deep voice that comes in during the second verse, the horn, the punchy vocals in the background — it all happens at such a sly pace, where you feel like you’re meeting new characters of a novel within the span of four minutes. And it’s remarkable.

This track doesn’t necessarily exude swag in the obvious way that heavy hip-hop beats do, but in its own way, it gives off a certain amount of swag. The kind that inspires swag in its listener. I hate using that word in excess, and for that I’m sorry. But I think you guys are with me on this one.

Chrome Sparks – Marijuana

Here’s to a happy Sunday. I’m riding this metaphorical high right now in so many different ways, especially after seeing The Black Keys & TV On The Radio last nightBoth are major favorites of mine and I am pretty sure what I experienced yesterday was one of those lifetime memories. Sometimes you just need to push your way to the front of an audience and fight off the crazies so that you can experience exactly the close-up and personal music of people you adore. And to do that at a music festival where hundreds of others are trying to do the same exact thing, is both frightening and incredible.

I arrived back in Brooklyn at around 1am last night feeling as if I could fly. The rain had stopped, I was eating a burrito, and totally in bliss. A natural high, that only seemed to continue when I woke up this morning and played this song. The title is a total coincidence, but I immediately thought about how awesome it is when a song gives you a natural high. Our emotions are constantly in motion, and it’s usually out of our control. When a song comes on that is capable of continuing a good feeling, it’s bliss. It’s especially so when we don’t know what the song is capable of.

That is precisely what happens here.

Chrome Sparks does something really special with his music, and particularly with this song. The  static bass synth line provides a solid foundation for a sexy track, paired with screwed vocals and a plethora of ethereal sounds that enter and exit the body of this fantasy-filled track throughout the all too short 2 minutes and 59 seconds.

Enjoy the day, get out in the sun whenever you see it shine through the window as it decides to come and go this week, and turn this one up for complete relaxation and enjoyment.
