Bicep – Vision of Love

Entering a club now is often a fairly predictable experience–you can expect to hear remixes of top 40 hits blended with Beatport’s top 100. This shift in the club music paradigm reflects the natural progression of House music as it’s infiltrated the mainstream. But it’s a far cry from where it all began. When you talk about House music, the discussion starts with the underworld of Chicago in the 90s, with Green Velvet and Joe Smooth–not Electric Daisy Carnival and Swedish House Mafia.

Likewise, at many festivals and shows in this era, the music often takes a side stage to the name that gets top billing or the firework show. And a lot of people would rather chug beers than you know, dance. This lack of dancing speaks largely to the disconnect between an audience and the music–people too frequently go to clubs to be seen, not to be a part of a scene. Classic House music embodies a sound that is impossible to ignore and necessary to submerge yourself in.

Unfortunately, I’ve never experienced a true, raw rave where only big beat, classic House tracks were played. I have this vision of rebels in torn up jeans rocking out in grimy basements with 100 people and a no name DJ spinning obscure cuts. Everyone is dancing, dripping in sweat, and feeling the beat, all for the love of House.

With “Vision of Love,” Bicep, a duo of 90s House music aficionados/bloggers turned producers, have captured this pure aura–it’s 7 8 minutes in classic, big beat House music heaven.

Sebastien Tellier – Cochon Ville (The Magician Remix)

Prosterne toi!

Danse! Rêve!
Come to us, I could be good
Come to usEnjoy the blue
So, be with us and feel the sound
Come to usUp off the ground
So, be with us I could be yours
Come to us, followers’ fool
So, be with us
So, baby, your money is following
An eternal blue
Danse! Rêve!”

Calling all the neo-disco fans out there and those who have yet to experience it, The Magician has remixed Sebastien Tellier’s mesmerizing call to dance. Turn this track all the way up. You’ll want to feel the drum kick and bass line pulse through your body. There isn’t anything quite like a solid dance track on a Saturday to push you into the night. It’s like having a cup of coffee in the afternoon only the jitters aren’t from the caffeine, they’re your body reacting to the sounds bumping through your ears. And what sounds The Magician has given unto us. Tellier’s original already had a vibe that hypnotized you and set you off, but The Magician amps the disco up another notch. He takes the lyric, “Feel the sound” and immerses us within it. The cult-like chants get inside your brain and seep into your blood stream until the final concluding call and eventual fall into the blue. Why not give yourself over to the sounds, you’re already here – take it one step further.

EMPT Presents: Kitsuné Club Night – Mixed by Jorge Bonjour

As many of you know last night we were live @ Santos Party House in NYC with the French taste makers Kitsuné. Thanks to everyone that made it out, we look to do much more like that in the near future in both NYC and LA so stay tuned…

He just moved to NYC and heard about our Club Night and made a mix using only the artists on the bill. Plastic Plates, Gigamesh, Computer Magic and Perseus in one mix, how could I say no? Turns out the kid Bonjour is pretty good. His mixes are clean, to the point and the tunes are of course right up our alley. We look forward to more from the new guy in town. In the spirit of the weekend, here’s an introduction to Jorge Bonjour and some music to get your pre-game soundtrack on point, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mai 2011

Where am I? I’ve been rockin’ for a good 27 hours now,  was in the studio with the Oos & Ahhs all day yesterday, pulled an all nighter to finish curating the music for a restaurant and then realized this morning I have to hook you up with this months mixtape – Go, go, go…

Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time…” – The Eagles

This months installment of LMDM is arriving 17 days late but in my opinion perfectly on time. I’ve been meaning to post about 9 of the 14 songs on the list which goes to show you how similar Steph and I are when it comes to music. There is much to be said about this line up, but I want to avoid too much talking because and let Mai 2011 shine. I’m pumped to finally have the new LMDM and I know a lot of you have been waiting so here it is, enjoy.

I decided to open this mix with Naked and Famous’ :48 intro called The Source which then goes into The Sun, my favorite track off the new album, besides Young Blood, and ended this month’s mix with one of my favorite Paris DJ’s Walter Sobcek, and his new remix of Parisian artist, Keren Ann, called My Name Is Trouble- the opener and closer of this month’s mix sets somewhat of a tone, which depending on the individual could feel completely different from one person to the next.

Yuksek – On A Train (The Magician Remix)

If you’ve been around these parts there’s a good chance you’re familiar with Belgian production team Aeroplane. What you may not know is that Nu-Disco team split up last year right before their debut LP We Can’t Fly, so if you see the name Aeroplane it now refers to a solo effort by Vito De Luca who kept the name…

It’s quite simple, Aeroplane has existed a little less than three years but me and Stephen have been working together for eight. During this time we’ve started projects, stopped them, and started new ones. Aeroplane was one of these projects. The reason why it’s me taking care of Aeroplane is I’m more the studio guy and I’ve been really busy with the album. There’s no anger, no fight, it’s all cool. It may seem strange doing this just before the album appears but we could either do it now or after the album, we couldn’t do it in the middle. If we did it after it would have meant waiting for two years so, it’s a bit brutal, but we decided the album can be the start of what Aeroplane’s going to be from now on.”

Collaboration is tough, especially when you think you can do something better yourself. However, in all creative situations I think it’s important to stay loyal to the art. If the songs come out better when the other person is around then keep things in order, if not then the choice is yours but people can get so caught up in credit and fame sometimes that they throw away the very thing that can help them.

Anyways, the other half of Aeroplane is Stephen Fasano who now goes by The Magician and if you listen to the quality of his productions you find it hard to believe he’s wasn’t “the studio guy.” So far he’s released a remix of Lykke Li’s I Follow Rivers and yesterday he released his version of Yusek’s On A Train so I say he’s been doing alright by his lonesome. In fact, both of these guys have been creating some pretty cool stuff on their own and continue to push the Nu-Disco genre to very interesting places so it all works out.

I read someone say this sounded like Blue Monday but that bassline is a clear cut Funky Town influence. Either way, great song and great remix to get rid of those midweek blues, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars 2011

There’s never been a ni$%@ this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this  hot or this strong
With so many different flows, this ones for this song
The next one I’ll switch up – This one will get bit up
These fucks to lazy to make up shit
They crazy, they don’t paint pictures
They just trace me.” – Jay-Z

That verse is exactly how I would describe Steph’s LMDM series, especially after the bomb she delivers this month. March crept up on us thanks to the February’s short month trickery and on the 28th I got an email from Steph reading exactly as follows –

its march tomorrow…..!!!!?!??!?!

LMDM is usually a month long project and I have to admit I was a little worried when I heard it this time around it was going to happen in about 24 hours but like a true champ Steph stepped up and absolutely crushed it. By now you’ve probably figured out that you can’t figure this girl out, I mean Skeeter Davis into Star Slinger?! How does it work, how is each tape so different month after month and I tip my hat to yet another fantastic installment of LMDM…

What more can i say?
What more can i do?
I give this all to you…”
– Hovito (What More Can I Say)

A 1964 song opens this one. Another track I wanted to single out is Star Slinger’s remix of The Go! Team’s Apollo Throwdown and also the Diamond Messages track, which I fell in love with on the spot when EMPT posted it a few weeks ago. I found 3D Friends when we interviewed the SKINS 19 year old music supervisor from London, you can check out that interview here, and the closer to the mix, White Wishes is another one to check out (all of their material is available to download for free on their bandcamp page)- everything I listen to by them I love. Have fun in the March moments.
