Ra Ra Riot – Too Dramatic (The Morning Benders Remix)

I sat down this morning to look for some new music when my college buddy Rene sent me a text telling me to check out the new Morning Benders remix of Ra Ra Riots Too Dramatic. I love the Morning Benders and have been a long time Ra Ra Riots aficionado, on top of that Too Dramatic is my favorite song from The Orchard so I knew I was in for a treat. Short story shorter, the remix was everything I expected, the connection was instant and here I am brining it to yall – squalin!!!!

You’re too dramatic, I don’t understand it.

These days I’m really trying to stay away from the type of people this song talks about. What I mean is that life is a lot simpler than some people make it. Sure there are certain realities that are tough but anything can be overcome, it’s been shown time and time again. It all comes down to one’s relationship with what’s there and what’s not. If you live in your head aka fantasy then of course things will be much bigger than they really are because your imagination run wild and make things a spectacular problem. In the 50th law Curtis said –

Reality is my drug. The more I have of it, the more power I get and the higher I feel”

That really stuck with me back then and it’s starting to make more sense by the minute. Anyways, I have a hotel playlist to finish so I can’t stay and chat but check out this remix, it’s really something to vibe to, enjoy.

It comes down to reality and it’s fine with me cause I’ve let it slide…” – Billy Joel

The Morning Benders – Excuses

There’s nothing quite like some old school sounding new school. The SoCal surf rock, 60’s pop sounding band The Morning Benders is back on the map with a new EP called Big Echo. Produced by Grizzly Bears Chris Taylor, the bands new sound is rich in texture with impressive arrangements and instrumentation which can pretty much be attributed to Taylor’s talents (check out TV on The Radio and Dirty Projectors for more examples of his work). The standout track, Excuses, is by far my favorite.

And I made an excuse and you found another way to tell the truth.”

The band made a pretty cool video in which lead singer Chris Chu reveals his Phil Spector influence for this song. For those who may not know, Phil Spector is a legendary American record producer/song-writer who originated an unconventional production technique called the “Wall of Sound.” It was the sound behind that irresistable 1960’s girl group sound and countless hit’s during that time period. Put simply, it involves putting a bunch of musician in a room and capturing the magic. Well, maybe that’s too simple but check out the video where Chu tries to demonstrate, enjoy.
