The Temper Trap – Need Your Love (RAC Remix)

The Temper Trap is one of those bands that refreshes you. Their sounds, words, production – everything just fits together neatly and fills your ears and fills you up. They have the ability to make you feel weightless and still grounded at the same time. Their writing isn’t profound, but it’s relevant and poetic but the words don’t take themselves too seriously. I’d like to see you try and describe the longing and desire for someone who’s juuust a little bit beyond your reach without sounding like a complete cliche. We were all poet’s once, right? 6th, 7th, 8th grade? You know those years spent listening to “hXc” music and idolizing Amy Lee and Gerard Way? Was that just me? …Bueller? Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that what The Temper Trap has done with this track (and every other track of theirs) is something not many of us can pull off as elegantly as they have: that is capture the moment of realizing your attachment to a significant other is actually significant.

Dougy Mandagi has pipes like no other man. He’s hitting notes on the verses on this track in his chest voice with control. As a trained vocal performer, I know that what he’s doing is not easy. His range is insane and his control is as strong as Beth Ditto’s. Imagine if  Beth and Dougy did something together; what a power-house of a song that would be. I say this all within the umbrella of the idea I started with at the beginning of this post: refreshing. While the original has this anthemic percussion element, RAC comes in and puts the focus on Mandagi’s performance. The production isn’t heavy: light chimes and low synths raise the vocals up on a pedestal and lets them soar. It’s a convincing tale because of how vulnerable Mandagi makes himself. That moment where you know you’ve fallen for someone comes with feelings of helplessness and an odd impatience. “Need Your Love” nails this in a manner no one but The Temper Trap could pull off.

And I am a war of flesh and heart that’s left undone
Between the person that I was and have become
Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you

…There’s no resting in my heart

There’s no resting now.”

The Temper Trap – Fader (The Knocks Remix Feat. Samuel)

I really enjoy both versions of this track for different reasons.  The Tempers Traps original version has the vibrant rock/indie up tempo vibe where you hear it and you just want to jump around where ever you are.  The way the drum and bass kick in right away with the high energy harmonies being a perfectly precise instrument all on their own, makes for one great high energy track.

But then I can never resist a remix, especially a really good one by The Knocks whom I have mentioned before are a really great duo, paired with Samuel and you’ve got something special to listen too.  When you think of an electronic remix you might think fast uptempo, but they slow down the Fader track very nicely so that you feel like you are in a more dreamy vibe probably in front of a pool or a beach on this gorgeous Sunday with a drink in hand admiring the view whatever that may be, use your imagination!

It shows a lot of great diversity in the track and the artists that are handling it with obvious care, to be able to give it two great distinct vibes so that you can play them back to back and yet its like your not repeating the same track but two very different ones.  I wanted to give you fine readers something upbeat and also a little more relaxing to vibe out to this Sunday, so press play and don’t even worry for a second what’s on your agenda for tomorrow, enjoy!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Janvier 2011

I’ve gotten a few email and seen a couple of comments from people asking why we didn’t do a best of 2010 list. Steph finally sent me an answer to that question in the form of a mixtape because we no speak best of 2010 list, we speak music over here. We’re getting a lot of new visitors these days so if you’re not familiar with LMDM I couldn’t think of a better way to get acquainted with the queen of style.

Steph was hitting home runs in 2010, brining us something completely fresh and new for 12 months straight. I’m certainly the biggest LMDM fan and if anyone thinks different we can take this outside and see whose boss! Seriously though, I think I speak for all fans in saying that we appreciate the work Steph puts into these tapes. There’s no question in my mind that LMDM is a labor of love, there’s so much thought and feeling put into it and it translates to everyone that hears it. We appreciate it Steph and look forward to another year of magic…

Yes, this is about mid month 15ish days late…but still, its here. The list below is a special mix for the New Year/wrap-up of the beloved 2010. Instead of choosing my favorite tracks of 2010, I chose  special tracks and artists I featured throughout Le Miel du Mois’ this past year. Most blogs did their ‘best of ‘lists and I think a lot of us agree on what was amazing and what stood out, so rather than echo a round-up list, we thought we would do it a bit different – with a LMDM montage for you to download and here we are…

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition (RAC Remix)

Someone commented on the original version of  The Temper Trap‘s Sweet Disposition post yesterday and this morning I woke up and iTunes started playing the RAC version so it was meant to be. I can’t believe I posted that back in January, is it really November?! This whole 2011 thing is really about to happen huh?

Remix Artists Collective (RAC) crew have been one of the most consistant and persistant remixers of 2010. Many say that focusing on quantiity usually leads to some sort of decline in quality, well these guys missed that lesson because every single remix has fantastic in it’s own right. Unfortunately, some people can only think of 500 Days of Summer when they think of the original but this song is soo much more than a soundtrack. Some dude/girl named Kashi left a comment on the January post that pretty much some’s it all up…

I found the meaning of this song to be about how everything is infinite but moments of love, a kiss, joy, loss are all temporary and so life is best experienced with wanton abandon since nothing ceases or lost and all comes to full circle.”

I couldn’t agree more and it kills me when people spend their time living the past or worrying about things the haven’t happened yet. Anyone can die right now, live in the moment, that’s all we have, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Septembre

A lot of exciting things are happening this month, Hear No Evil continues to lock in clients, EMPT did over 2 Terabytes of traffic last month which is flat out ridiculous for this underground baby, and moves are being made on a daily to keep things in motion – We get’s busy ya’ll. On top of all that I woke up not too long ago to work on this mixtape and I was in pure delight when I finally got to listen to this months LMDM. Steph and I call ourselves twins when it comes to music and the song selection, vibe, energy and good times represented in this tape couldn’t make that little inside joke more true. To put it simply, she killed it. All the haters who showed up last month, this tape is going to be tough to deal with so…

Don’t hold on too long cause that’s how them stories start out, and all the girls that played me eat your mother fucking heart out…- Drake (Unforgettable)

All the other mixtape makers who’ve followed our blueprint, we’re flattered but remember…

I’m We the best at, you know I ain’t no apprentice to this
Me and my ni%&a# we invented the shit
I
We came into the business with this, The Originator, none greater
Jaz Steph-O finish this shit…” – Jay-Z (Jigga What, Jigga Who)

“There are a ton of amazing new indie and electro acts out right now. Lefse Records and Arcade Sound are two labels I always watch closely because they just seem to know how to pick em.

This month’s LMDM highlights a lot of new breakouts including Brooklyn based Bronze (unsigned), San Francisco’sBlackbird Blackbird (Arcade Sound) and Dominant Legs (Lefse Records), Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings (Old Flame Records), 19 year old Brooklyn based Oberhofer (7″ out on InSound now), Hamburg’s Dirty Disco Youth (Dim Mak) and Chicago’s My Gold Mask (unsigned). And with summer (sigh) over, these artists give us a lot to look forward to with a breath of fresh air in their respective indie and electro genres. Go get your hands on as much of their stuff as you can, support them and buy their EP’s/albums.” -The O.RI.GI.NA.TOR

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition

Cut Copy, Oh mercy, Clue to Kalo and the list goes on. The Aussie’s have been pumping out great artist and bands like America Samoa produces NFL players – a lot.

I was thinking of the best way to explain this songs meaning and the only that came to mind was a line from Hypnotize that perfectly captures the songs essense.

Gon’ blast squeeze first ask questions last, that’s how most of these so called gangsta’s pass.” (Notorious B.I.G.. Hypnotize)

The older we get the more we think, rationalize and calculate everything before we act which usually leads to no action at all. The easiest way to lose is to be caught thinking while the world passes you by – “that’s how most of these so called gangsta’s pass.” Given that the nature of the world is endless possibilities you can imagine how lame it can be to get old and get trapped in this mentality. So while most people would call this a love song, I think it has a great meaning to do with capturing the innocence of youth, following your gut and constantly moving forward, enjoy.

Won’t stop till it’s over, won’t stop to surrender…”

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: The Lost Tape

With high expectations, rebel citizens of the millennial generation leave the tired and corporate ruled world of radio to begin a new life in music blogs…

Raid the radio!
Cause we’re tired of hearing the same old song.
We’re gonna change the dial to something new.
Bring some truth to this town.” – General Electriks

However, the Recording Industry of America gains great military powers and soon ceases control of one music blog after another, in the name of justice and peace.

The year is 2009, the space age. In a move to counter The Industries tyranny, rebel citizens of the Et Musique Pour Tous faction scheme to bring new arsenals to the earth disguising them as mixtapes. Made to introduce innovative and traditionally oppressed styles of art and music to the world, these tapes created a problem for The Industry taking away radio spins from the likes of elemental pawns Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. However, leaders of the powerful and corrupt hosting giant Gisol Incorporated catch on to this operation and in a merciless act to maintain power destroy EMPT and any traces of these mixtapes. Once again forced into the underground, EMPT forges an alliance with a small but powerful hosting company to rebuild and continue distribution of the mixtapes. As the revolution continues the tapes have gained great popularity around the world with more and more oppressed citizens finding new ways of expression and artistic appreciation. On 1.18.2010, EMPT released The Lost Tape, the first of the series destroyed by The Industry. The release is meant to symbolize the struggle and success of the continuing revolution. The second act has just begun, we’ll be busy…

Let’s see which course the future will take. It’s up to the people whether our plans to reform will succeed, that’ll decide the future…”

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Janvier

I haven’t posted anything in the New Year for two reasons, one I haven’t found a song worthy of your time and more importantly the 1st of the month is reserved for Steph Lund’s hit mixtape Le Miel du Mois and that’s how I wanted to set it off. Unfortunately the New Year means an even busier schedual for me so I can’t sit here and talk this one up as much as I’d like to but as usual Steph has given us a new mixtape with a unique flavor and vision, here are some words from the mixtape queen herself, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois: Janvier:
2010. May the year be: “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – Daft Punk. May we dance harder, love better, play faster, and live stronger. And if we do make mistakes in 2010, which we will, may they make the next step of our lives brighter and better for having made that mistake. Long live disco. Long live the dancefloor. Long live the queen. Long live the generation that is us. Happy New Year and welcome to 2010.”
