EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Decembre Best of 2013

I can’t lie, I’ve had this tape since mid December. I did have an extremely busy end of the year and going back to NYC for two weeks didn’t exactly help my productivity but that really has nothing to do with it. In fact this tape has been complete since Steph first sent it over. HP sent us one of their new Split X2 laptops, you know the one Clams Casino has been using for those beat making videos you’ve been seeing all over the net. Anyways, I didn’t want to take my army of technology with me on this trip so I put Ableton on the X2, got inspired, took it on my flight and did all the mix on it while on my way to New York. Gotta love the space age.

The truth is I have this weird thing with LMDM’s where I want to hold on to it for myself for as long as possible. I realize EMPT is this whole thing now and people have certain expectations that need to be met but I like to do what I feel and being the only one with LMDM for a little extra longer makes me feel good, sue me. Seriously though, I know it’s a problem, I promise to be better about it this year. Anyhow, Steph usually speaks through her selections but this time she graced us with some beautiful words and I won’t go on with my ramblings and distract much longer. We took a little extra time to mix and blend the tracks while keeping Stephs original track order in tack so I think you’ll guys like how this one flows. To make up for my hoarding and to step it up for 2014 I’ll be mixing all LMDM’s like this from no on, enjoy.

Putting this lmdm is always particularly special – for me, each year it’s a way to go through the endless lists of my favorite songs which in a way is to go through moment after moment after moment that made up my year – to sum up “a best of” – this took me exactly twenty minutes, at a quarter to midnight, BC I knew exactly what needed to be on this – so this is my version of a best of – each song is a piece of my year and perhaps of yours as well…each track is much more than that – it’s a distinct memory you repeat in your head bringing you back to that individual experience you associate it with. For me there’s a strong mix of emotion attached to each one and a definitive event, person, or both. Here’s to a full year-  of ups and downs, highs and lows, falls and beautiful mistakes but with each close of a year – comes a new opportunity – of renewal and most importantly, an open path – waiting to be taken…

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Julliet 2013 (Mini-Mix Series)

Damn, it’s been a while since we released LMDM… So much has happened – Steph got engaged, is constantly on the move, I’ve been 100 miles and running at The Playlist Generation and life has generally been on full throttle but we wouldn’t want it any other way. To say the least, balancing art and business is no walk in the park and we can’t fake the funk so if it doesn’t happen organically we’d rather not do it at all. We don’t do this for money…

I live for the funk, I die for the funk…” – Notorious B.I.G.

So apologies for recent months but Steph had a great idea to get us back in the game that will make it all better. Each day for the next 4 days we’ll be releasing an LMDM mini-mix to add a little funk to your brain. We’ll start at July and make our way to the present. Now that’s how you return to the scene but…

Don’t call it a comeback, I been here for years!” – LL Cool J

Damn right, this is not our first rodeo and the internets most beloved is years in the game now. It blows my mind whenever I think about it.

As many of you know, Steph curates LMDM top to bottom with each song being a chapter in the long form narrative that is our beloved mix tape. This time around the stories are just as compelling yet in a shorter form which is completely reflective of our current lifestyles. When you’re on the verge of so much change it’s hard to lock into one vibe. You’re inspired and you want to take in the whole world because so many forms of expression connect with you. That’s what it means to love something, to want every single inch of it. Listening to the kaleidoscope of genres, styles and emotions covered in these tapes show us not only how much Steph loves music but also how much she keeps things moving.

Treat it like boxing, stick and move, stick and move…” – Biggie

Art imitates life and right now these little LMDM blast make a lot of sense to me because exploring, absorbing and keeping on is just what the doctor ordered. I have an unfair advantage since I’ve heard them all but this series is awesome and I think all the LMDM loyals will have a great time listening. So without further ado here is the Julliet 2013 Mini-Mix to keep things off. Next one drops tomorrow, enjoy.

  5. London Grammar – Wasting My Young Years  (Kids of The Apocalypse Remix)

EMPT Presents: Le Miel du Mois Juin 2013

It’s what y’all been waitin’ for ain’t it,
What people paid paper for damnit!” – Kanye West (Barry Bonds)

We know you all have a craving, we sensed it because so do we. This months Juin installment of LMDM couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.  Summer is finally here, our senses are on overload and what could be more satisfying to alleviate your crave then this.

If you’re an addict of LMDM, then you already know that each installment is going to be flawless in some way.  I can’t say one is better then the next because each one really does satisfy a distinct craving, energy, and each one is to be remembered for how it satisfied us.  Steph is the ultimate psychic to all of our musical taste buds.

Buddhists would say not to hold on to your cravings, let them go, and sometimes I could agree but I think healthy cravings are a part of life as long as your aren’t destroying your body and your spirit.  If whatever you are doing makes you happy then I say why not, because no mind is alike.

“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose.”  -Ayn Rand
The way each track compliments the next is unbelievable, it pretty much helps you to visual each day in its progression as it should be for the rest of the Summer; wake up, call in sick to work, grab a beer out of the fridge for breakfast, go to the beach, get a little tipsy, take a little cat nap before the night begins, maybe a little sex if your lucky, wash away the day, start all over, dance like you don’t give a F*&k, let the night take over your mind and body…Repeat tomorrow!
We can’t thank Steph enough for making sure we all didn’t go through withdrawal, it was getting close but it looks like we made it! Crave no more you sexy animals, press play and enjoy this sweet sweet Summer magic!

Vadoinmessico – Teeo (Crystal Fighters Remix)

Happy July! What a beautiful weekend it has been. I came across this song last week on a run. I like to download music to my iTunes without necessarily listening to it so that the experience is raw and emotional when I’m out and about. This came on just as I was approaching the middle of the Williamsburg bridge on my run, a tricky spot seeing as I sometimes turn around halfway if I get too hot…As soon as this track started to pick up speed, I found myself doing the same. I love the way the vocals are chopped up and served like a raw sushi delight, delicate and flavorful. I wanted to chop up my own pace so that it matched the beat, flailing my arms and shaking my butt, since it’s New York City after all. No one really cares. But I didn’t do any of that. Instead, I finished the rest of the bridge and turned around just as I’d hoped I would.

There’s truly not a better feeling in the world than being able to successfully reach a goal, even if it’s just a running distance goal.

I think this is the perfect track to kick off July. It’s light and airy but present, the kind of tune that will happily get stuck in your head. It’s strange and rare that we find tunes stuck in our heads that we actually enjoy.

And with that, happy listening!

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Decembre 2011

I’ve never been a big fan of looking back, sure it’s comforting to reminisce about the good old times…

Hey you know everybody’s talking about the “good old days”
Everybody! The good old days
Well, let’s talk about the good old days…” – Gladys Knight

But in my mind the past does more harm than good. If you think about the past so much you’re going to constantly be ignoring what’s happening to you right now. The past is good for one thing and one thing only – educating yourself, learning from your mistakes and those of others, otherwise it should be avoided like the plauge. Your current situation is a result of your past thinking and thus your future situation will be a result of your thinking right now! However, if you keep thinking the same sh*&tty thoughts because you can’t stop thinking about the past you’re going end up with the same result. It will happen over and over and again and you’ll just be wondering why but the past is why…

Life is like a treadmill ni*#@s running in place,
Getting no where fast, a whole year done passed…” – Jay-Z (It’s Like That)

Like I said, the value of the past is education, it’s the only way to break the pattern. Otherwise it already happened and if you really think about it, it doesn’t even exists anymore, it’s literally just in your head. My conductor, the late great Walter J. Turnbull always told us – “you’re only as good as your last show.” That always stuck and it means more to me now than ever. Think about your job, say you’ve put in years of service but if you start screwing up today it’s good bye. If you’re in a relationship, those first months or years we’re wonderful but if you stop showing love, caring to impress, to improve and always keeps things fresh things are bound to go sour…

You’re only as good as your last show” – Walter. J. Turnbull

So what does all of this have to do with LMDM? Well, if you’ve been following LMDM these years you’ll know that this ruthless forward thinking mentality is at the very nature of Steph’s mix tape series and listening to this special version inspired all these thoughts. For those unfamiliar with the series this is a great way to get to know it, here’s why

Instead of a “best of” 2011 artist and songs mix,  our end of the year mix is a compilation of the best of LMDM’s of 2011. I tried to chose one track from each month, of the past 11 LMDMs but that was tough and turned into two select tracks per month, because lets face it, 22 tracks is better than 11 and I wanted this holiday tape to be a BIG one. Every LMDM I listen back on reminds me of what I did that month and the little moments that made the month, and piled on, that made the year. …Here’s to Hec and EMPT moving to LA and to a bigger better faster stronger 2012.

That said, here’s to the future, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Fevrier 2011

There’s a million Valentines day commercials on TV, red is everywhere and I still had no idea it was already February until Steph sent me the lastest installment of LMDM. Who can blame me though, the city’s been dark and cold for who knows how long so I’ve made it my duty to zone out on all things music.

This month Steph is a facilitator because all you want to do while listening is escape to the surreal dreamscape she creates with the song selection and sequencing. Just listening to See of Bees going to Jamie XX to Fleet Foxes will instantly change your environment and put you in an extremely relaxed, balanced and creative mindset. Don’t forget though, this is a Steph mixtape and what goes down must come up and you could start dancing at any time with little to no warning. Once again, Steph kicks it up a notch cooking up a mix fresher than the rest leading me to title Steph and LMDM as your favorite mixtape maker’s favorite mixtape, enjoy.

I discovered Sea of Bees in Rough Trade, London. The opening track on the album is Gnomes, and I thought it was perfect to open the tape with that as well. Her voice is strong and a little different and I think it sets a great tone for February’s mix. Agent A & Omae is another band I found last month that you should definitely check out more on their bandcamp and download their whole album, its amazing. I could say something about each track, but I’ll leave it at that and let you decide which are your new and maybe some old favorites..”
