Lo Lytes – Winter

Lo Lytes just came across my radar and he does it in stunning fashion on his brand new single. It’s called “Winter” and it has enough sensual friction to melt all the ice of this season away in an instant (okay, so there’s no ice in Los Angeles right now, but you get the idea). The instrumental has some dope, understated tropical flair and an effortlessly cool groove while Lo Lytes’ vocals are the perfect crossover between pop and r&b. It has all the makings of a lowkey hit and has me extremely stoked to hear what’s coming on his EP which apparently drops later this year.

It’s not the most popular opinion but winter is without a doubt my favorite season of the year. The way the chill of the night hits your skin is like no other feeling and it gives you the perfect excuse to coop up indoors and dive deep into reading or that new favorite TV show – it’s the perfect solo activity, but if you have a significant other to keep you warm and keep you company, even better. I’ve personally been spending my time reading about spiritual experiences in a historical context and binging Russian Doll and I honestly can’t imagine a better way to ride out this February. Here’s to hoping your winter has been well spent too.

Fryars – Love So Cold (Lone Remix)

I woke up this morning to a solid inch or so of snow outside my window. My apartment was chilly and my coffee tasted extra nice. Admittedly  this is my favorite kind of weather. Perhaps it’s a repressed nostalgia for my hometown of Syracuse, NY but that’s besides the point. There’s something about the gray skies and diffused light and sharp bite in the air that gets my mind going. It’s the kind of weather that increases my productivity, but come nighttime I’ve checked out and checked into my sweatpants, chai, and good book. Either way, it is still morning as I write this and my coffee is still hot so I’m more than ready (and oddly excited) to get this day started.

Beginning your day with good sounds is necessary. It’s not something we’re necessarily conscious of but it greatly impacts our day ahead. Think about what you listen to in the morning: is it a loud banger to wake you up or is it something mellow so compliment your waking up body? Personally, I believe in the latter. Today I put on this track by Fryars, the 22 year-old electro alias of Benjamin Garrett. This track begins with a bite-  its melodic synths and staccato noises are sonic snow flakes falling down. Garrett’s vocals smear across the lush soundscape. It’s a nutrient rich song. By that I mean it’s a track that centers you…if that makes sense. It’s sublime etherealness that awes and calms (and warms when it’s cold).

Whether you’re listening to this on your headphones or through your speakers, get lost in this track and float and then carry on.

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather

The first time I heard this song I passed it off as another cute quirky indie romance tune; something you’d find on the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack, perhaps. “Let me hold your hands in the holes of my sweater.” Aw, that’s so sweet,” I thought. Then I listened to it again, “…Aw…” – only now I’m irritated. That line is SO tragically cutesy that it’s good.  It brought me back to my Hellogoodbye and PlayRadioPlay! days (two artists who I shamelessly love and still listen to…eheh). “Why can’t I be that cute and quirky romantic boy for someone?” I began to not like the song because The Neighbourhood was making something I would say to someone sound great while if I went and pulled that line on someone, they’d purse their lips into a Miranda Priestly smile, quickly giggle, and turn away.

Let’s just say nostalgia for my good ‘ole MySpace days set in and I kept listening to it. What I passed off as charming little lyrics are quite the opposite. This song tackles the unspoken lust towards a future lover and/or significant other. Jesse James Rutherford, the Cali band’s frontman, is giving us his silent confession of lusting over this girl having – what seems to be – not gone much farther beyond his imagination. He addresses us and this girl both in the track.

Touch my neck and I’ll touch yours
You in those little high waisted shorts.”

Rutherford sings to her before heading into the chorus aside where he sets the scene with one love and two mouths. The chorus, however, seems to be all his wanting; a dream he has from time to time. The band’s “oh’s” in the background and quiet harmonies combine with a beach-pop tune. While it does go for a little ballad spin in the refrain, it’s all apart of emphasizing the longing Rutherford is feeling. His lover isn’t opening up (she’s cold) and to attempt to gain their trust, he offers to hold their hands…make them comfortable. Aw (for for real this time)!

The Neighbourhood has just come on to the scene (they’re streaming their new EP for free on their site) and already have shown potential to gain a considerable audience. This song – with its semi-precious lyrics and summer beat – is the perfect accompaniment as we enter the last weeks of summer.
