EMPT Presents – S U M M E R : a n t i – w i n t e r 2A by Ryan Radler

Last week we experienced some major player hating from The Man that eventually led to a subpar release of anti-winter 3A. If you haven’t heard or downloaded that one yet check out last weeks post here and spread the word, the kid Ryan Radler is bringing nothing but heat and something that good should not be left unknown. We’ve had many set backs with The Industry & it’s minions in our day but every time we come back swinging even harder and this time it’s no different. We’re 4 weeks and running with exclusive releases of the absolute best summer mixtape series on the web and we couldn’t be more excited about it. When we’re done with the anti-winter series I’m going to do a post featuring all of them so you guys can see just what this guy is doing here. From the custom artwork to the limitless sounds, these tapes are bleeding style and we can’t take ’em for granted…

I ended up spending the entire winter of 2011 developing all my mixes. Cold, blustery weekends you could find me snug in my loft researching and archiving the songs that I would then throw into Logic Pro for the fine-tuning mix sessions. In a cathartic twist, projecting myself into the Summer through the mixes actually made me forget the void left after the January heat wave in LA. I have channeled my “yearning for Summer” through these mixes and now, after many months, we have finally arrived!

We like to use music around these parts for all sorts of healing so that philosophy is right up our alley. Is it just me or does that blonde have really nice hair? Alright, I’m gonna go get all my work done to this fantastic soundtrack, you should do the same. Enjoy.

Coachella 2011 Recap – Mixtape

Earlier this week I returned from my mecca in the desert, Coachella. This was my 2nd year attending as the people were beautiful, the weather was blazin, and the music was blissful. With such a loaded lineup, it’s impossible to see every artist you want to catch, as I missed plenty of good acts due to time conflicts or the stage I was at, but here are the sets I was able to catch a good portion of:

FriWarpaint, Cee-Lo Green, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, A-Trak, Afrojack, Cold War Kids, Brandon Flowers, Interpol, The Black Keys, Sasha, & The Chemical Brothers

Sat Freelance Whales, Foals, Joachim Garraud, Chuckie, Cage the Elephant, Yelle, Bright Eyes, The Swell Season, Mumford & Sons, Fedde le Grand, Steve Angello, Empire of the Sun, Arcade Fire

SunJack’s Mannequin, City & Colour, Angus & Julia Stone, Jimmy Eat World, Nas & Damian Marley, Foster the People, Ratatat, The Strokes, Leftfield & Kanye West

If you have the funds or the time to make it next year, I can’t recommend it enough. I set high expectations for the festival each year and the festival  has surpassed them every time. Here is a bunch of video highlights put together by JamBase – Coachella Highlights

Below is a mixtape of songs I enjoyed the most at the festival. Hopefully these tracks can already generate a flashback to those who were there. I’m assuming you’ve heard most of these tracks by now but just in case you haven’t. . .

Freelance Whales – Generator First Floor

Empire of the Sun – Standing on the Shore

Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Ratatat – Mirando

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong

Yelle – Comme Un Enfant

Foster the People – Houdini

Cage the Elephant – Shake Me Down

Kanye West – Can’t Tell Me Nothing

The Chemical Brothers – Swoon

Mumford & Sons – White Blank Page

Angus & Julia Stone – Yellow Brick Road

Yelle – Que Veux Tu (Madeon Remix)

This track was produced by a 16 year old, you read it right, a 16 year old. Madeon is a teenager from France dropping bangers for places he can’t even get into. You may not know him but you’ll def know his remixee Yelle who is synonymous with French pop and house scene. The heartthrob nature of these lyrics confirm that but once again we witness the power of the producer . Madeon transforms the songs bubble gum feeling to a passionate, dramatic and exciting French electro house epic. If you were thinking about staying in tonight be careful playing play because this is going to make you move, enjoy.

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Mars 2011

There’s never been a ni$%@ this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this  hot or this strong
With so many different flows, this ones for this song
The next one I’ll switch up – This one will get bit up
These fucks to lazy to make up shit
They crazy, they don’t paint pictures
They just trace me.” – Jay-Z

That verse is exactly how I would describe Steph’s LMDM series, especially after the bomb she delivers this month. March crept up on us thanks to the February’s short month trickery and on the 28th I got an email from Steph reading exactly as follows –

its march tomorrow…..!!!!?!??!?!

LMDM is usually a month long project and I have to admit I was a little worried when I heard it this time around it was going to happen in about 24 hours but like a true champ Steph stepped up and absolutely crushed it. By now you’ve probably figured out that you can’t figure this girl out, I mean Skeeter Davis into Star Slinger?! How does it work, how is each tape so different month after month and I tip my hat to yet another fantastic installment of LMDM…

What more can i say?
What more can i do?
I give this all to you…”
– Hovito (What More Can I Say)

A 1964 song opens this one. Another track I wanted to single out is Star Slinger’s remix of The Go! Team’s Apollo Throwdown and also the Diamond Messages track, which I fell in love with on the spot when EMPT posted it a few weeks ago. I found 3D Friends when we interviewed the SKINS 19 year old music supervisor from London, you can check out that interview here, and the closer to the mix, White Wishes is another one to check out (all of their material is available to download for free on their bandcamp page)- everything I listen to by them I love. Have fun in the March moments.

Yelle – Ce Jeu (The Twelves Remix)

It’s Wednesday already!? Damn, looks like time is starting to fly again which means it’s more important than ever to stay in the absolute present if you want to slow things down. I was on a Twelves binge this morning and realized I never posted their remix of Yelle’s Ce Jeu and that’s just wrong. You already know the production is going to be phenomenal so just add this to your party playlist and get on with your dancing.

I’ve always been fond of the lyrics to this song which are about the repetitive nature of games some people like to play in relationships…

Tu repars c’est ça
Toujours le même schéma
Et j’anticipe a chaques foi”

These fine citizens get a kick out of manipulation and control in relationships, I’ve never had enough time in the day to explore the topic but it doesn’t exactly sound like a night out to me. In the song Yelle tells her love that she is well aware of the game and confesses how she actually enjoys both the playing and being played – more power to you girl.

Et j’aime en faire autant
Nous sommes tout deux victime
De ce doux jeu d’amants”

Alright, much to do but press play on this jam and give this morning a much needed dose of feel good, enjoy.

You see through, that’s why nobody never gon’ believe you…” – Jadakiss (1998, It’s All about the Benjamins)

Crookers – Tons Of Friends

I have no time for anything today but I wanted to post two songs off of the Crookers Tons of Friends LP simply because they they rock. Crookers are the undisputed champions of electronic music production, boasting a catalogue of endless styles and techniques they continue to push the envelope with an innovative sound and seemingly endless inspiration. They came into the mainsteam spotlight through their remix of Kid CuDi’s Day N’ Night but continue to grace us with some of the most exiting and entertaining productions yet. I’d love to really get into it but Fridays are always travel days for me so I’m on a run eating, enjoy.

Crookers – Cooler Couleur (Feat. Yelle)
