I’ve been on a late 60’s and 70’s music binge lately and I’m starting to think I may have found my favorite time period for music. I mean there’s endless gold from all genres everywhere you look, it’s incredible. In that search I came across an album called East West recorded in the mid-60’s by The Paul Butterfield d Blues Band. Now I’m not a big fan of the blues but these guys do it right. To make a long story short, I get my friend Antoine’s newsletter a few hours later and it’s featuring one of my favorite Janis Joplin songs, One Night Stand, which consequently was recorded with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Last week, late in the night, I was short of ideas when someone came up to me with a request (I don’t take requests officially but I honestly find them very useful to understand everyone’s mood) for the Cure.
I don’t really know how from one song to the other and within an hour we managed to spin Metro Area and the Cure but somehow it all made sense.
The problem really wasn’t playing the Cure, the issue was more after the fact: what do you play after?? I’d love to hear your thoughts but at 4am that Saturday night, I went for a song I just re-discovered: One Night Stand by Janis Joplin.
I remember the album Pearl in my parent’s collection and how I would always look at her with an amused face.
Now that I listen to it regularly, I realize that she managed to wrap it all up rushing through life (great gigs, Woodstock, a duo with John Lennon, “Piece of my heart”) in 27 years and this crossing the US a few times (she left Texas for San Francisco when she was only 20) and really lived her life like … a one night stand.So here’s the song, perfect for a cold Sunday night.
